Mission Statement
We are the parish community of the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion, New York
in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany. This is our mission and our purpose…
To encourage and enable all to discover and live
• a deeper relationship with God through: celebrating the sacraments,
receiving the Word of God, learning about the faith and growing in prayer.
• their Christian calling, by equipping and enabling them for ministry and
mission in the church, in the family, in the wider community and in service
to those in need.
We have this mission and purpose so as to give glory and praise to God and so as
to be His faithful co-workers in the building up of His Kingdom.
CHURCH OF THE ANNUNCIATION
ILION, NY
28th SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME
In today's readings, God's covenant with his people is likened to
being invited to a great feast, a feast of rich food and choice wines,
as the first reading from Isaiah says, or a great wedding banquet, as
in Jesus parable in the gospel. Both readings tell us that God
invites all people to his kingdom, but the parable reminds us that
not all who are invited will make it to the kingdom. The choice of
whether the kingdom will be ours or not rests with us. God invites
us all, but not all of us will accept that invitation. Some will
choose not to accept the invitation, they will choose "farm" or
"business", or place some other obstacle in the way choosing the
kingdom. The invitation is there; the choice is ours. Do we accept
the invitation and enter the feast, or do we reject the invitation and
go in another direction?
COLUMBUS DAY
Columbus Day this year is observed on Monday, October 13th
(Monday is also Thanksgiving Day in Canada). The parish offices
will be closed in observance of this national holiday.
St. LUKE
Next Saturday, October 18th, is the feast day of St. Luke, the
author of the third gospel and of the Acts of the Apostles. Luke
was most likely a physician, a Syrian from Antioch. He is not part
of that first generation of Christian disciples, but is dependent on
the traditions he received from those who knew Jesus directly. The
Gospel of Luke is dated by most scholars around 80 AD, about the
same time as Matthew's Gospel was written. Both his gospel and
the Acts of the Apostles were written for a largely Gentile
audience.
