October 2014 Your Preferred Financial Institution Chartered 1936 Celebrate International Credit Union Day: Local Beginnings Bring Global Change The theme “LOCAL SERVICE, GLOBAL GOOD” for ICU Day 2014 capitalizes on the “people helping people” philosophy. In the 1850s, hard times hit Germany and people lent to one another without thought of profit. The idea that ordinary people can cooperate to improve their economic lives survived and gave birth to credit unions (CUs). They did not let anything stop them, not even strong forces working against them, as the banking industry. Doing good is something CUs take seriously, locally and globally. This cooperative spirit had led to life-changing opportunities in the form of small business start-ups, home ownership and education. CUs are formed to help underserved communities. The CUAid.coop raised funds for CU members, employees and volunteers affected by natural calamities, e.g. Haiyan typhoon; CUs brought disaster relief and recovery in Haiti. It’s ON US NOW! It takes people like you—people with lives—to keep CUs alive. Your membership helps keep your Credit Union. Each time you use a financial service, you feel good knowing not only are you getting good quality, low-cost financial services to help make the most of your hard earned $$$, but that your participation empowers other members. Significantly, any excess profits are returned to members in the form of better loan rates and services—unlike banks that emphasize returning profits to stockholders! There’s MORE WE CAN DO. Recruit new members among your family, friends and co-workers. Consider volunteering—run for office and attend meetings and events (free financial seminars, included)—to share your ideas and enthusiasm, and learn, too. Wherever you go, talk about the cooperative structure and benefits of membership. From the earliest beginnings, CUs have grown to over 30,000 serving 200 million members worldwide. Together let’s celebrate ICU Day on October 16 by appreciating the pioneers and reflecting upon CU history and achievements. Is Your Home Winter Ready? A Home Equity Loan Can Help! Wills & Living Trusts Be alert for “PHISHING!” This is when copycat web sites use a name or web address that is deceptively close to that off a genuine business. The aim is to lure you into entering personal info such as account number, passwords, credit card info. Phishing or “spoofing” attempts by phone may also involve dissemination of fake emails, text, instant message, and social networking interaction to solicit personal info. Two good tips: 1. If contacted by someone asking for personal or account info, think about why they would need it. If it’s an organization you’re already doing business with, they already have such info. Simply put: Never respond to unsolicited requests for personal info. 2. Don’t click on links or attachments in unsolicited e-mails. Again, the links could take you to a fake web site to have you input personal info. They may also activate a malware download to your computer. If hit by ID Theft, here’s what to do immediately to prevent further damage to your finances: l Get on the phone. Call the bank, lender, card company, utility or merchant with whom you have the affected account. This stops thieves from racking up more charges in your name. l In a notebook, log down everything — calls, contacts, transcripts. File copies of documents. Use certified mails for letters. l Find allies and resources. Call your insurance agent, bank or credit union, and the HR department at work to ask what access you may have to free or low-cost damage-control programs for ID theft victims. l Reset your passwords. Make them strong---use upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. l Monitor your credit. Order your free credit report from Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. As a fraud victim, you are entitled to these reports in addition to your free annual credit reports. Check for errors and follow instructions for disputing an error. Credit.com’s Credit Report Card is a free service that provides two (2) free credit scores and a free monthly credit check. Falling credit scores can alert you to fraudulent activity. l Make a police report. Even if they can’t catch thieves immediately, reporting the crime makes a case against thieves down the line. A report may be needed to prove that charges in your name are not yours. l Dial 877-438-4338. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) makes ID Theft a priority. While it does not investigate individual cases, it collects info on crimes and helps police in their investigations. l Be patient. It’s tough to hear when you’re the stressed-out victim, but resolving the problem could take some time and work at your end. Take a deep breath once in a while and keep forging ahead! As our partner, CUNA Mutual Group, evaluated their product offerings in light of these changes, they made the difficult decision to exit the Life Savings (LS) product on December 31, 2014. Please read further for additional information. Virtues extolled by health-and-fitness enthusiasts come with a bonus: KEEPING MONEY in YOUR POCKET! LIFE SAVINGS: This insurance has been provided at no additional cost to you for eligible share deposits up to a maximum of $4,000. Coverage on existing insurable deposits will end on December 31, 2014, the last day of the conversion period. Please destroy any CUNA Mutual Life Savings Certificate of Insurance you may have in your possession at that time. That is why we want you to know you can convert your Life Savings coverage to a Primary Protection Plan, underwritten by CMFG Life Insurance Company. This new plan is a member-pay, whole life plan up to $4,000. If you apply within the stated time period, there are no age restrictions, waiting periods, exclusions, or health questions. Just request, complete, and return an application with your first premium directly to CMFG Life Insurance Company by December 31, 2014, in order to receive coverage. Log On Today! Let us subscribe to these money-saving healthy habits: Drink alcohol in moderation - This means (1) serving/day for women and (2) servings for men. A serving is 5 oz. wine, 12 oz. beer. Higher-than-moderate drinking essentially pickles the liver and contributes to high blood pressure and high triglycerides. True, “beer belly is a beer belly.” Calories from alcohol tend to be stored more quickly as fat. Eat your veggies… grains, legumes (fruits, too) - Meat is the biggest contributor to saturated fat intake which increases the risk of heart disease, the #1 cause of death in the U.S. There were 597,689 deaths in 2011, per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Healthful change is as easy as bulking up on beans, legumes, grains, some eggs, while making meat a condiment rather than the focus of the meal. It’s like tomato sauce with ground turkey over pasta, instead of a chunk of meat. The changes will be evident: lower grocery bill. Say “NO” to tobacco - The Surgeon General’s report in 2010 showed cigarette-related deaths in the U.S. at 443,000 annually. At $6.03 average price/pack, one who smokes one pack a week spends $313.56/year. Ride a bike or walk to work - Health experts say: The physical benefits of being active regularly include: improved mood, better-quality sleep, improved mental sharpness, decreased body fat, increased lean muscle mass, and improved bone mineral density. Saving achieved: a 10-mile trip to and from work paying $110/month parking will save $10.35/day by biking, or $227.70 a month. Bring in your lunch - Brown-bagging is a timesaver at work and also a money-saver! Preparing lunch at home allows us to cut down on unhealthy additives and preservatives that can come with take-out foods. Online Account Access On any computer with Internet access, you can apply for loans, find out if a check has cleared, make loan payments, transfer money between accounts, view your account balances, and more. Online Bill Payment There’s no reason to buy stamps or envelopes anymore. Instead, you can pay your bills in your home or office. Set up onetime or recurring payments and payees. These are two free, easy and convenient services that keep your Credit Union accounts close no matter where you go or your travels take you. 3 Thirsty? Drink water - A typical 12 oz. soda contains 150 calories. You have to walk about 1.5 miles to burn those calories. Two sodas/day? That’s a 3-mile hike just to stay even. Per an article from Harvard School of Public Health: Sweetened drinks could drive us to crave other sweet or high carb food. Other studies link artificially-sweetened drinks to weight gain. The average price of a 2-liter bottle of Coke is $1.57. If the average person drinks 44 gallons (or 167 liters) annually, as the Associated Press reported, that’s $131.00/year. Many car dealerships have forms where you agree to it without even knowing what it is. If you drive off the lot before your financing is complete and the financing fails, the dealership can ask you to pay more for the vehicle in costs and fees or return it. Save yourself from this awkward and unnerving situation. If you’re asked to sign the form, don’t. Just keep the car on the lot until your financing is finalized.
