STUDENT LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
NEWS FROM CCS

SSLC: We are not just another brick in the wall
On September 17 Kaylee Sarah, Jenna, Ben, Tim, and Mike with Mrs. Hovland and Ms. Fritsch took
off from Creighton and made the journey to Nipawin for the annual Saskatchewan Student Leadership
Conference. The theme was ‘Just another brick in the wall?’ This encourages students to think about how they
are not just another brick in the wall; they can do amazing things for their schools and their communities. We
all came back inspired!
We arrived on Wednesday afternoon, along with six hundred other students and two hundred advisors,
to a carnival atmosphere with a rock climbing wall, bbq, Minute to Win It activities, potato sack races, tricycle
races, and pump up music! We all gathered in the evening to listen to Ian Tyson, a speaker from St. Thomas,
Ontario, explore how our attitude can affect our day to day life. His comedic, personal, and energetic approach
had everyone in the gym in stitches as he encouraged us all to say ‘Hooray for Everything’ and make the most
of each situation.
The fun continued on Thursday when students attended sessions in the gym, enjoyed a trade show with
displays from all over the province, and spent time making connections with the other students in their groups.
Students were moved by Phil Boyte’s activities and speech as he explored the ways in which our students
could create a more positive and supportive environment for all. Advisors enjoyed breakout sessions in which
we were able to have open and meaningful discussions with other schools about their SLCs struggles and
accomplishments and share ideas of a successful Student Leadership Council.
Thursday night we put on our best gear and we attended an amazing banquet hosted at the Curling
Arena. It was incredible to see hundreds of excited youth all in one place, encouraged and inspired from their
days’ activities. Students danced away the night while advisors enjoyed socializing and a mock casino night.
Friday morning came too soon for our students after they were up dancing the night away, but all
managed to be bright eyed and bushy tailed in time for speaker Kevin Brooks. Kevin talked about his night of
drinking and reckless driving that led to the death of his friend and his own paralysis. Kevin had the gym in
tears as he explained his inner battle in the months after the accident. ‘Just wiggle your toes’ is his catch line. It
is something so simple, yet because of his choices, he no longer has the capability. Each time you are faced
with a tough decision, just wiggle your toes and make the smart choice! Afterwards, students were pumped up
outside at the pep rally while advisors enjoyed speaker Mark Scharenbroich and his many words of wisdom as
he uncovered the secrets of successful schools. Advisors, students, keynotes and hosts returned to the gym to
hear the pitch for next years’ SSLC and closing remarks. Friday afternoon was bittersweet as we loaded the bus
and left our new friends behind, but came back with the knowledge and inspiration to continue to work towards
a more positive school environment.
Thank you to our CCS students for being wonderful ambassadors of our school. Students stayed with
billet families and all represented our school in a positive way; one even had his billet family up until two in
the morning drinking tea, chatting, and eating dainties. Thank you for your willingness to participate and try
new things! Thank you for remembering everything your parents taught you and for making great decisions on
the trip! Thank you for being an incredible group of young adults that now have the power to make a
difference!
It was truly some of the best three days of my life! I am so very fortunate to have had the opportunity to
chaperone six delightful individuals and experience the power of youth!

The Sharing Circle in 1F
The students of 1F have the opportunity each day to share feelings,
stories, reactions, and funny tales during Sharing Circle. On the first day of
school, we learned that a Sharing Circle is a sacred place where what we
share is kept secret. We learned that the only person who may speak is the
one with the sharing rock and it is passed around the circle clockwise. We
have Sharing Circle each day to link to our English Language Arts lesson; it
has become a much treasured part of our day! The other day, we read a book
called ‘I’m so Embarrassed’ by Robert Munsch. Before our read aloud, the
topic of Sharing Circle was to speak about a time we had been embarrassed.
We love to laugh in 1F and this circle brought on some giggles! Last week,
we worked on a song called ‘Skip to my Lou’ in which we lost something.
Students shared of a time when an item they treasured had gone missing or
were lost and what they did to find it.
Sharing Circle is a fantastic opportunity for students to make
connections between topics we have learned in the classroom and their daily
lives outside of school. We use this as a time to practice active listening,
speaking skills, and stamina. In 1F, we try our best to support our friends,
listen to them with the same respect we would like, and we always keep our
Sharing Circle stories sacred.
