Spartan Gold Raffle tickets are being sold and collections have been going well. Please note the minor changes to
collection dates due to a couple of upcoming school days that do not include Emmaus classes. Collections for the
Spartan Gold Raffle will take place on the following dates:
o Tuesday, October 14 (due to Testing Day on October 15)
o Tuesday, October 21 (due to Half-Day Schedule on October 22)
o Wednesday, October 29
o Wednesday, November 5 (final collection day)
On each of the collection days, students are to turn in their checks/money and raffle stubs in a sealed envelope with
their name and amount written on the outside of the envelope. Spartan Gold Raffle money will not be accepted in the
Main Office. Each student is required to sell 8 raffle tickets. Complete details of the Spartan Gold Raffle can be found on
the Marian Catholic website.

iPad Responsibility: Along with the implementation of iPad's comes the additional responsibility for our students to care
for their electronic devices both on and off the school campus. While on campus, students are expected to keep their
iPads with them whenever possible or locked in their locker. While off campus, students are responsible for charging
their iPads at home in the evening so they come to school with a fully charged device to get through the school
day. However, if your student forgets his or her iPad in the morning, the Main Office staff will not accept devices to be
dropped off for distribution to students. Other non-emergency drop-offs such as lunches, homework, etc. are also being
discouraged, as this will encourage students to become more responsible. We appreciate our parents' compliance
with this policy.
Meal Time Accounts: If your student chooses to purchase lunch in the cafeteria, they must have funds deposited into
their Meal Time account. Money may be deposited on-line with a credit card (on Marian website, under Parents,
Mealtime Online link. It usually takes 48 hours for the Mealtime & Marian's computers to synchronize, so money
deposited on-line may take a day or two to appear on your student's account). Cash or checks may be brought to the
Tuition Office/Bookstore (located near the main office) prior to 8:35 a.m. for funds to appear in your student's account
that day. If you experience problems with Meal Time on-line, please call their help number at 1-800-755-0904. For your
information, the MCHS cafeteria menu and price list can be found on the Marian website under Parents. Please
remember that no cash is exchanged in the cafeteria.
Student ID's: Students are to wear a school-issued ID on the school-issued black & white lanyard around their neck
during school hours every school day! Failure to wear the lanyard and ID card will result in a detention. If students forget
their ID, they may rent a temporary ID for that day at the Welcome Desk (outside of the Main Office) before 7:40 a.m.
The rental fee is $10 ($5 for the ID & $5 deposit), and a detention is issued. Five dollars will be returned and the detention
cancelled if the ID and lanyard are returned immediately after school. If they do not return the rental ID immediately
after school, there is no refund and the detention stands. If students do not have the rental fee they can pay before
school the next day; after that the rental fee is doubled to $10. If students lose their ID, you must purchase a new ID for a
fee of $5. The cost for a new lanyard is $5. Please consult page 26 of your Parent/Student Handbook for the complete
ID policy.
After School Supervision is provided in the Leadership Center for students who need to wait for their ride home. While in
the Leadership Center a study hall environment will be maintained and students must have their student ID, remain in
dress code, use the restroom located in the Leadership Center, use their cell phone for texting only, may listen to MP3's
using ear buds or headphones, and must ask a supervisor to use their phone to call for a ride home. Students will only
be allowed to exit through the Leadership Center doors and not allowed to re-enter the building once they exit.
Students who remain in the Leadership Center past 5:30 p.m. will be charged a $25 fee for every 30 minutes they stay
past 5:30 p.m. After school supervision in the Leadership Center is not available on half-day schedule days. Please
consult page 8 of your handbook regarding this policy.



STUDENTS

Hey Spartan Fans!: Your Running Spartans (Cross Country) will compete at the Rich Central Invitational this Saturday with
the first race at 8:30 a.m. (Frosh-Soph Girls) followed by the Varsity races. There are only a few meets left so come on out
and cheer on your Running Spartans!





Prepare Ye the way for Godspell! Tickets will be on sale next Tuesday-Thursday for the performances on Friday, October
17th and Saturday, October 18th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 19th at 2:00 p.m. Student tickets are only $5.00!
Special Jeans Day: October 17th: Campus Ministry will be hosting a "Special Jeans Day" on October 17th for the
Dominican Sisters in Iraq. Sister Luma, who worked at Marian, belongs to this community. These sisters and their families
had to flee from ISIS. They lost their homes and convents. More information will be shared in the days ahead.
Lost and Found: If you lost an article of clothing, please come to the main office to check the lost and found. Any items
not claimed by Friday, October 10th will be donated to charity.

Chicago Architecture & Design College Day: The Consortium for Design and Construction Careers invites students to
attend their annual Chicago Architecture & Design College Day on Saturday, October 18th at Harold Washington
College from 11:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m. This is a specialized college fair strictly featuring colleges and universities that offer
programs in the areas of Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Design, and Construction. This is a great (and free)
opportunity for students considering an education and subsequent career in these fields. You are asked to register

Aviation Career Conference at Lewis University: Lewis University will be hosting their 10th Annual Aviation Career
Conference on Saturday, November 22nd. The conference is a partnership put together by the Federal Aviation
Association (FAA), the Aviation industry, and Lewis University to provide high school students with the unique opportunity
of talking to more than 60 professionals in the aviation field including pilots, air traffic controllers, drone pilots, aviation








maintenance technicians, airline executives, airport managers, airline administrators, and many more. This event is FREE
- register online at lewisu.edu. Lewis University is located in Romeoville, IL.
Scholarship Opportunities:
Monika Skrzykowski Heritage Scholarship is available to 2015 Grads, and current college freshman or sophomores
involved in Polish School, or cultural activities of Polish artistic groups or other Polish clubs that give back to the
community and demonstrate the pride in Polish Heritage by their actions in those activities can apply. Come to the
College Room for the application. Deadline: October 14, 2014.
The Horatio Alger Scholarship is available online at: www.horatioalger.org/scholarship. To qualify, you must have at least
a 2.0 GPA and require financial assistance to go to college, and be involved in co-curricular and community service
activities. Deadline: October 25, 2014.
Catholic Charities Poetry Contest is open to all grade levels, 9-12. The theme for the contest is: HIV-It's About You and
Me. Come to the College Room for details. Deadline: October 27, 2014.
Joseph Blazek Foundation Scholarship is available to seniors who will be majoring in Engineering, Math, Chemistry
Physics or related Scientific fields. Come to the College Room for information. Deadline: March 15, 2015.
College Fairs!
Purdue Calumet University is having an Open House on Saturday, November 1st from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. Register at:
www.purduecal.edu/openhouse - application fee will be waived for those who apply during the Open House.
AAMC Minority Student Medical Career Fair will be held on Saturday, November 8 from 7:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at
McCormick Place East Building Lakeside Ballroom 354B Chicago, IL. FREE registration opens Monday, September 8. For
information and registration visit: www.aamc.org/medicalcareerfair. This event will feature workshops and recruiters
who can answer your questions about biomedical sciences research and how to become a doctor!
SERVICE CLUB








All of these Service Club activities are a lot of fun! Sign up for anything you can fit in your schedule. Sign up lists are in
the Main Office.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please save your empty pop cans during these days of October. Bring
them in a plastic bag to Marian Catholic on October 24 where they will be picked up for recycling. So save your cans
during October for Breast Cancer research!
Game Night at Brookdale Plaza: Wednesday, October 15 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Come and play board games with the
Senior citizens at Brookdale Plaza (formerly The Park) in Olympia Fields on Vollmer Road.
Prepare a Meal for the Homeless: Thursday, October 16 from 2:30-3:15 p.m. We will get a meal prepared in the
Leadership Center to feed the homeless. Come help make casseroles, dessert, etc.
Feeding the Homeless: Friday, October 17: We will take the meal we prepared on Thursday to feed the homeless at St.
Agnes in Chicago Heights.
Get Creative: Monday, October 20 from 3:30-5:30 p.m.: Comes and make cards for senior citizens and make a dessert
for Meals on Wheels for senior citizens at Faith Church in Homewood.
Get Creative: Thursday, October 23 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Come to the Flossmoor Library Come and make cards for senior
citizens in nursing homes.
Recycling Collection for Breast Cancer Research: Friday, October 24: Bring in the empty pop cans you've been saving
all month for breast cancer research.

SPORTS RESULTS

Cross Country: At Thursday's dual meet on the lakefront in Chicago, Marian scored double victories over DeLa Salle with
the Varsity Girls winning 21-38 and the Varsity boys winning 19-40. Placing 1-3-4-6-7 were Kelly Mindak, Zaria Sydnor,
Katie Serba, Stephanie Kristl, and Ariana Arriaga. The Spartan Men placed 1-2-3-6-7 with Nathan Holley, Owen Piatt,
Thomas Edwards, Joshua Hines, and Joel Godinez. WAY TO GO RUNNING SPARTANS!
