St. James Lutheran Church
Belle Fourche, South Dakota
October 2014 Newsletter
To the great and gracious people of St. James Lutheran Church and friends around the world,
If you haven’t been around, then you have missed meeting a great man, Shadrach Peter, from
India. We met 9 years ago at a conference, and our connection point was that he knew the same
person that I knew in India. Meena Prashantham went to seminary with me, and she was good
friends with Shadrach’s wife, Gladys. Do the math because there are 1.2 billion people in India,
and the odds of him knowing the one person I knew from India are staggering beyond explanation.
Shadrach wants two things from us here at St. James Lutheran Church: friendship and prayer.
If you are inclined to give, let it be because of the friendship that he has brought to the people of
Belle Fourche, South Dakota. Over the last two weeks, I have been honored to bring Shadrach to
meet many people in the city of Belle Fourche and in the surrounding area. He has always been a
great joy, and even as I write knowing that he will be leaving to visit other people in other states,
I am already going to miss him.
This coming Sunday, Shadrach is preaching at the United Methodist Church in Belle Fourche
and will share about friendship and prayer. In talking with Bob Duemig and Shadrach, we are
now starting a new venture together to share another offering with Shadrach. The day before
Thanksgiving, for those who are not traveling, we will alternate a shared worship experience on
Thanksgiving. This year St. James will host and Pastor Bob will be preaching, and next year the
United Methodist Church will host and I will be preaching. All the while we will bring together
funds to send to Shadrach and Gladys Peter in Muranpur, India.
I want you to pray about not only supporting his mission with your friendship and, most importantly, with your prayers but to start saving for a trip to Muranpur, India, next year in January/
February. Get your passports. I have a vision for how to help the people in Shradrach’s village,
and where there is a vision, God will bring provision. Shadrach said that on Sunday with us.
Part of my vision is to find a way for solar panels to be bought in India and then installed in
Shadrach’s village, because the power issue in Karnataka is so very important. I would also like
to install gutters attached to barrels on the buildings so that they may be able to reuse the rain
water in their fields. Of course we can do so much more, and part of it
would be to take people who are skilled to train people in construction,
electrical, plumbing, and agricultural development.
You see where I am going; a round-trip ticket to India costs $1600, and
we would be able to work along side Shadrach and Gladys while making sure we train individuals how to run solar panels and anything else
we might be able to do.
I have so much more to share with you that Shadrach and I have experienced these past weeks, but for now keep Shadrach and Gladys in
your prayers. I hope to see a full church every day of this month so I
can see your smiling faces. God be gracious with you until we meet
again.
In God’s grace,

Common Sense Parenting classes will be
held at St. James Lutheran Church from
October 9 to November 13, 2014. This is a
free, 6-week, 12-hour program on instruction, videos, and role play that will help
parents develop and practice parenting
skills. Classes will be held every Thursday
from 6-8 PM. Please register by calling
Susan Wilson at 605-394-5120 or [email protected]. ……. If you already
received the October calendar, you
will notice the change in dates for
this event. Please note that classes

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once again the women of St. James Lutheran will be making and selling lefse, and
volunteers are needed to help make the
lefse. On October 16 at 1 PM, the women
will peel and rice the potatoes to make the
dough. The lefse will be fried on October
17 and October 18 at 9 AM. This process
will be repeated the next week, October 23,
24, & 25. The women are not taking any
orders for lefse this year; if you wish to
purchase some, they will be selling lefse in
the Fellowship Hall on Saturday, October
18 & October 25, from 1-3 PM.
