Panel Discussion at Boston College
Presenters: Claire E. Wolfteich, Roberto Goizueta,
Colleen Griffith, and Thomas H. Groome

Taking the Church to the Street, Presentation by Rev.
Debbie Little
B.C. Gasson Hall, Rm. 100, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon
B.C. School of Theology and Ministry, 9 Lake Street,
Room 100, Brighton Campus, 4:00 p.m.
This event celebrates the publication of Invitation to
Practical Theology: Catholic Voices and Visions (2014,
Paulist Press), a collection of essays which promises to
advance the vital conversation around practical theology,
especially in Catholic circles. It will feature presentations
by contributors Roberto Goizueta, the Margaret O’Brien
Flatley Professor of Catholic Theology, B. C. Department
of Theology; Colleen Griffith STM Associate Professor of
the Practice of Theology and Faculty Director of
Spirituality Studies; , and Thomas Groome, STM Professor
of Theology and Religious Education, and Chair,
Department of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry.
Moderated by editor Claire Wolfteich, Associate Professor
of Practical Theology and Spiritual Studies, and
Co-Director of the Center for Practical Theology
One day more than 20 years ago, Debbie Little looked at
all the people sitting on the Boston Common park benches
and thought, “The church is out here, not where buildings
are necessarily, but where people are. We need to show up
for it!” With this inspiration, she was moved to take the
gifts of the church out to people who cannot come in to
receive them—gifts which she describes as celebration,
accompaniment, welcome, continuity, prayer, music, Bible
study, and pastoral care. Who are these people, how do we
serve them, where do we begin? Say YES to the small
voice within and the leading of Pope Francis, and join
Rev. Little as she shares experiences, graces, and struggles
of church life on the street. “Jesus was a homeless man
and so am I,” says Billy, who will join her with others to
share blessings they receive from being met by church on
the street. Sponsored by the School of Theology and
Ministry. Free of Charge.
Free of charge and open to the public. Early registration
recommended.
Rev. Dr. Debbie Little is founder and missioner of Ecclesia
Ministries and Common Cathedral Boston.

Lecture by Kathleen Hughes, R.S.C.J.
Sacraments and Chicken Soup:
Sacramental Living in a Post-Conciliar Church
B.C. Corcoran Commons, Heights Room, Chestnut Hill Campus - Free of charge.
After identifying some key sacramental insights of Vatican II, assessing the reception of the liturgical reforms
in the United States, and concluding that genuine catechesis based on a new theology of sacrament has not yet
happened, this presentation will consider a fresh method of opening up the mystery of sacrament.
“Mystagogy” as method invites believers to explore the intimate relationship between the liturgy and the way
we live our lives, between sacraments and chicken soup. Sponsored by the School of Theology and Ministry

we are very ready and deeply glad to pray for loved
ones. We will list the names of those who need our
prayers for one month at a time. If, at the end of that
period, a loved one is still in need of prayers, we will be
more than happy to continue to pray for them. Just
contact the rectory office (781.235.0045) and let us
know that you would like to continue to have your loved
one remembered in prayer.
WHERE ARE YOU GOING?
Have your travels taken you near and far?
Is there a deep longing within you for something more?
Catholicism is a way of life and becoming a Catholic is a life long journey in faith.
If you are,
--not Catholic and interested in learning more about the Catholic faith;
--Catholic but never received all the sacraments of initiation (baptism, communion, confirmation);
--been away from the church but have returned and want to know more;
--Catholic and want to share the journey;
Then this invitation to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is for you.
The RCIA is primarily a journey of faith. It is a process, rooted in history, which educates in the Catholic
faith and, if so desired, prepares adults to receive the sacraments of the Church, usually at Easter. More than
that, it involves entering into a relationship with the risen Christ and a community of God’s people.
It begins, in the words of an anonymous believer, with an “awareness of the stirring of faith and curiosity
within one's heart, to a life of faith, love, and justice lived in communion with Catholics throughout the
world." It begins here at St. John’s on Sunday, October 26th at 10 a.m. in the Rectory (next to the church).
It begins with your questions and the freedom to discern your decision to follow this path. For more
information, please contact Svea Fraser at (781) 237-7560 or [email protected]
CHRISTMAS WISH 2014: The St. J ohn Chr istmas Wish Committee is for ming for
the 2014 season and invites new members to join us for this special work of filling
Christmas wishes for many children in the surrounding communities of Roxbury, Lowell,
Brockton, and Wellesley. We will gather over 400 children's requests and fulfill them
through the generosity of our St. John community families through sponsorship, shopping
and donations.
To join our committee, please contact Liz Corcoran at [email protected] or
Sarah Connolly at the Rectory at [email protected]

SECOND COLLECTION: This weekend’s second collection
is the special monthly (Annual Appeal) for St. John Parish.
NEXT WEEKEND’S SECOND COLLECTION: Next weekend’s second
collection supports Catholic World Missions. By Baptism, all Catholics are called
to participate in the mission of the Church and share their faith as missionaries.
World Mission Sunday gathers support for the pastoral and evangelizing programs
and needs of more than 1,150 mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands,
and remote regions of Latin America. The funds gathered on World Mission
Sunday are distributed in the pope’s name by the Society of the Propagation of the
Faith—a Pontifical Mission Society. Please visit www.propfaithboston.org for
more information.
