President Allan Townsend commented on the success of past President Chris Doody’s time as President of the Ballarat flyfishing club.
It was acknowledged by all members that Chris had been a very
successful President. There was no doubt that Chris had worked
very hard during his two years as President and had promoted a
great number of successful fishing and social ventures.

Fishing reports
Local waters – Keith Ridsdale gave report of his fishing on
Cairn Curran where he had caught a carp of 13.5lb.
Keith also noted that a member of the Ballarat Anglers
had taken a trout which weighed 5.5lb from Tullaroop
reservoir. This latter fish was full of the stick caddis.
Ballarat Anglers have been fishing Toolondo with some
success.
There was a report that Lake Purrumbete has only been
producing small fish. The Delatite River is providing
great fishing and the Aire river was producing good
bream. Alan Porteous gave a brief outline of his recent
fishing trip to Christmas Island.
Hepburn reservoir is now full and fish are smelting. Newlyn
Reservoir has some fish smelting and appear appear to
be feeding on green nymphs.
The opening weekend for the BFFC was held at Lake
Fyans. Ian Hare gave a report that although the weather was fantastic, as was the company, there were no
fish taken. The lake is 82% full. Approximately 10 club
members attended the opening weekend at Lake Fyans.
BDAA and stocking outcomes - Chris Doody reported that the
AGM was on 10 August 2014. Chris outlined the structure of
the forthcoming BDAA Kid’s day in Victoria Park. Geoff
Cramer reported on the recent stocking Roundtable with
DEPI. At this meeting there was discussion about the poor
quality of rainbow trout and the possibility of stocking
McQuarrie perch in some rivers. It was noted that DEPI requires feedback from anglers as it is one way to measure the
success of the fishery. It is now possible to use a mobile
phone app to record fish captures. The 10,000 fish that were
to be stocked in Lake Burrumbete will be relocated elsewhere.
CVFF - Chris Doody reported that this organisation has bimonthly meetings and has a representative at the DEPI
stocking meetings. The AGM is in October 2014 and nominations are open for country representatives. Chris stressed the
importance that BFFC should have a representative on this
organisation.
Fisheries/VR fish Roundtable discussion – Geoff Cramer
spoke of the recent meeting that was held in Ballarat. Unfortunately the number of attendees was less than expected but
there was a good representation from a range of fishing
clubs. The highlight of the meeting was a presentation by
Taylor Hunt on the Chinook fishery in Lakes Purrumbete and
Bullen Merri. There was some discussion on proposed changes to the Murray cod size limits.
Casting – Barry Whelan reported that there are still good numbers of members attending the Sunday morning casting.
VRfish – Geoff Cramer reported on the meeting that was held
in the middle of August 2014 where proposed Murray cod
regulations were discussed. In addition there was discussion
about the access on the boat ramp at Lake Fyans.
Aquatic Association - Royce Baxter informed members that
the Lake Wendouree weed cutting is ahead of schedule.
Royce commented that the water quality was good and the
lake is almost full. Class A water will be used to maintain the
depth of water from October through the summer. Royce
mentioned that the lake will be closed for the World Masters
rowing from the 7-12 October. There may be possibility of
exceptions during the evenings after the rowing. At the
meeting there was discussion about access to boat ramps, in
particular when the weed cutter is using the boat ramp.
Len Walker trophy - This competition, which is held on Sunday afternoons from midday until 4:00 pm, will finish at the
end of daylight saving. The current leader is David Bandy
with a fish of 59 cm. It was noted that this is a catch and release competition.
A motion to receive the reports was moved on a motion by D
Flenley nd seconded J Penney.

who was nominated by G Watts was duly elected as a full member
of the BFFC. Lou was welcomed into the club by President Allan
Townsend and congratulated by members.
Upcoming events
Fly Tying instruction – Sean Purcell – fly tying will be held on
Tuesday September 16th starting at 7.00 pm. Andrew Gardner
gave a brief report on the August fly tying evening where there
was a good turn up of members. During the September fly tying
night Luke Barby will demonstrate nymphs that were successful
during the recent overseas flyfishing championships. Sean Purcell will assist members to tie patterns which may seem complicated. All flies tied on the Tuesday night fly tying session will
be donated to the Legacy night on Thursday, September 18 that
the Ballarat Anglers club.
McAdam – September 14th – this competition will be held at
Cairn Curran and fishing starts at 6.00 am until 1pm. The
meeting point is Picnic Point. It is often a beautiful girl Wallace

Show bag packing for BDAA Kids day - Friday Sept 19th requires volunteers. Show bag packing will commence at 4:30

BDAA Kid’s Day Sept 21st – Victoria Park – 9.00 am to mid day.
Members are asked as to whether they can spare a few hours to
volunteer for this event. There will be a barbecue after the fishing.
RISE Film Festival Oct 4th - Chris Doody outlined a brief history
the RISE films. This event will start at 6:30 pm with a light
supper. The cost is $20 per person .
Wastell Trophy Oct. 18-19th – this is the Premier flyfishing
event for the BFFC and will be held at the Creswick caravan
park with fishing on a number of local waters. Members are reminded to book accommodation as soon as possible. The cost
is $25pp with breakfast an extra $5.00 pp/pd. Assistance is required from Ballarat flyfishing club members and a list will be
circulated.
Fred Eva Eucumbene trips – Week 1 – Nov 15th – 22nd [place
available]; week 2 Nov 22-29th [Trip full].
November fishing trip – there was extensive discussion as to
the location of a possible trip in November. A number of places
were identified as possibilities. This matter will be taken back to
the committee to discuss further.
Stan Burt trophy– this competition is held over the daylight saving months on lake Wendouree from 18.00 to 23.00 on Monday
nights only.
October meeting – the social event for October monthly meeting
will be a presentation by FlyFinz where there will be gear for
sale. Members are advised to look at the appropriate webpage
if they are going to pre-order flyfishing equipment before the
meeting.
General Business
2014/2015 Rotary Raffle – Alistair Lowne & Mike Sorrell
– this is the major fundraising event for BFFC members.
All members will be sent a book of raffle tickets for them
to sell. It is important that members retain all funds and
ticket stubs and return these to the organisers as soon as
possible.
BFFC Club Calendar – Royce Baxter is organising this calendar and thanked members for a number of excellent
photographs that he has received so far. Royce requires a
list of BFFC events for 2015.
Maintenance program - Dale Flenley also organising a
working bee on Nov 2nd where members will attempt to mend decking handrail
complete trophy cabinet
hang new back doors to clubrooms.
Rubbish traps on lake Wendouree - Danny Forde asked
the question as to whom was responsible for ensuring
that the rubbish traps on inlets to Lake Wendouree were
operational. Geoff Cramer responded saying that he
would follow this matter up with the City of Ballarat.

Fishing Photo Presentations
There was an excellent presentation by Scott Xanthoulakis
on his recent flyfishing trip. Three club members decide to fish
some of the higher streams in Victoria and New South Wales. The
video was excellent and members congratulated Scott on such a
professional job. It is hoped that Scott and his fishing group will
produce more videos of their future fishing events.
Many thanks Scott an entertaining video.
Fines Session
David Bandy was the fine master and collected funds for people
who capture small or very small fish, the constant typos, being
President, mobile phone ringing during meeting, people who go
swimming in the lake, people who don’t know what meeting they
are attending and who they are representing.
As always members thanked those who made their small financial
contribution to the club library.

About 50 fisher folk attended the meeting with representatives
from many local clubs. Sean Purcell, Steve Lock, Dale Flenley and
David Bandy attended as representatives from the BFFC taking
flies and donations collected at the last meeting and demonstrating
fly tying through the night. Following a very short meeting a magnificent supper of freshly cooked fish bites in beer batter was enjoyed by all. Keith Ridsdale gave an overview of the long association between BFPS&AC and Legacy and the tradition of the annual BFFCfly tying night. The formal part of the evening concluded with the traditional fly raffle resulting in the presentation of a
cheque by BFPS&AC President Craig Hon to the Legacy President
Peta Gillespie for $700. A great night was enjoyed by all.

Wastell competition Rules:
1.The competition shall be fished with fly only.
2. Trout shall be the only species of fish eligible to be weighed in.
3. The minimum size of the fish weighed in shall be 25 cm.
4. All fish to be eligible for the trophy must have been caught
during the competition hours and presented for weigh in, by the
stated closing time on each day of the competition.
5. The Trophy shall be awarded to the club, whose member has
caught the heaviest fish during the hours of competition.
6. All fishermen participating, must sign on personally at the sign
-on point, prior to commencing fishing.
7. Competitors must comply with all state fishing and boating
regulations

Click Drag (or Click & Pawl Reel): A mechanical system on a fly
reel used to slow down or resist the pulling efforts of a fish, so as
to slow the fish down and tire it to the point where it can be landed.
Clinch Knot: A universally used knot for attaching a hook, lure,
swivel, or fly to the leader or line; a slight variation results in the
Improved Clinch Knot, which is an even stronger knot for the above
uses.
Cone Head: Same as a beadhead but the bead is cone shaped.
Covering (or Delivery): Used to describe the action of casting the
fly to a fish or into a promising-looking area of water.
Current Seam (or Seam): Current seams are formed by the nature of current flow. Usually the middle of a river or stream contains the fastest flow with its edges having slower flows due to friction with the bank and the streambed obstacles. A stream channel's curvature redirects its heaviest flow away from the remainder
of the stream creating current seams.
Damselfly: An important still water aquatic insect most commonly
imitated in the nymphal form, with hatches usually occurring in early
to mid-summer. Adult looks similar to a dragonfly but smaller and
folds its wings along its back when at rest.
Dead Drift: A perfect float in which the fly is traveling at the same
pace as the current, used in both dry fly and nymph fishing (see
Mending Line and "S" Cast).
Delivery (or Covering): Used to describe the action of casting the
fly to a fish or into a promising-looking area of water.
Disc Drag: A mechanical system on more expensive fly reels intended to efficiently slow and tire a fish that is taking line. Resistance is created between discs that apply pressure as line is
pulled from the reel. Different from the click drag, the disc drag is
smoother and less likely to create a sudden stopping resistance that
will break the line.
Dorsal Fin: The fin on the back of a fish, sometimes divided into
two or three partly or entirely separate sections.
Double Haul: In this cast the fly fisher quickly pulls and releases
the line on both the back cast and the forward cast. It is used to
create greater line speed, enabling the caster to reach farther or cut
through wind.
Double Taper (DT): A standard fly line design in which both ends
of the line are tapered, while the greater portion or "belly" of the
line is level. An excellent line for short to moderate-length casts and
for roll casting, but not as well suited for distance casts.
Drag: (1) An unnatural motion of the fly caused by the effect of the
current on line and leader. Drag is usually detrimental, though at
times useful ' such as imitating the actions of the adult caddis. (2)
Resistance applied to the reel spool to prevent it from turning faster
than the line leaving the spool (used in playing larger fish).
Drag-Free Drift: This is accomplished when you minimize the effect
of the current flow on the fly. This is equally important when fishing
dry flies or nymphs. Trout are more likely to take food moving at the
same speed as naturals being carried by the current and may even
be spooked by flies moving too fast or too slow.
Drift: Four types of drifts: Straight upstream from you, upstream
and across from you, downstream and across from you, straight
downstream from you (see Fishing the Drift).

Dropper: A practice of fishing two flies at the same time, often
one on the surface and a second underwater. A classic combo like
the 'Hopper-Dropper' features a dry fly grasshopper pattern with a
small nymph or emerger pattern tied off the bend of the hook. A
dropper effectively doubles your chances of finding which type of
insect and imitation fly the fish are keying on.
Dry Fly: Any fly fished upon the surface of the water, usually constructed of non-water-absorbent materials. Dry flies are most
commonly used to imitate the adult stage of aquatic insects.
Dry Fly Floatant: Chemical preparation that is applied to a dry
fly to waterproof it immediately before use; may be a paste, liquid, or aerosol.
Dun: (1) First stage in the adult mayfly's life cycle, usually of
short duration of 1 to 24 hours. This is the stage most often imitated by the dry fly. (2) A darkish grey-blue colour that is very desirable in some fly tying materials.

Eddy: A section of water that is less disturbed than the surrounding water, often found on the edge of a current or where two
streams converge.
Elbow Control: The idea in the overhead and roll cast is to obtain
a tight, wind-cutting loop that will roll line accurately to the target.
To achieve a tight loop, maintain your elbow on a constant level as
you move the rod from the pickup, to the back cast, to the forward
stroke. Holding the elbow "on the shelf" is much easier done when
the feet are placed as described in the Stance. When your upper
body can pivot with little constriction as you move the rod back and
forth, the elbow will almost automatically stay in a constant plane.
Emerger: Pertaining to aquatic insects, the name used to describe
that time frame when the nymph reaches the surface and the adult
hatches out. The emerging nymph may well be the single most important nymph phase for the fly fisher to imitate.
False Cast: A standard fly fishing cast used to lengthen and shorten line, change direction and to dry off the fly; frequently overused. In false casting, the line is kept moving backward and forward without being allowed to touch the surface of the water or the
ground (see Casting Arc, Back Cast, and Forward Cast).
Ferrule: A collar that is found at the point where sections of a fly
rod are joined. The end of one section fits inside the end of another, in an overlapping fashion at the ferrule.
Fingerling: A small, immature fish, such as a juvenile trout.
Fishing the Drift: This is the process of fishing from your target
point to where you will pick up the line for your next cast. If you
chose your initial casting position carefully, you can get a long drift,
maximizing your chance of catching a fish.
Fish Ladder: A series of interconnected pools created up the side
of a river obstruction, such as a dam, to allow salmon and other
fish to pass upstream.
