This international conference is part of the activities of
the Bern-based SNSF Sinergia project “The Interior:
Art, Space, and Performance (Early Modern to Postmo
dern)”. Our focus is on the spatial change in contemporary architecture since 1970 with regard to hybrid spaces
of a semi-public or non-public character under the
current condition of globalization with its predominantly
economic paradigm.
The objective of this conference is to address space as the
fundamental element of architecture in the modern age,
oscillating between architectural form and social practice.
In this sense we want to stimulate discussions on hybrid,
heterotopian and performative architectural spaces throughout modernity. The papers address the conception of the
“heterotopian space” (Foucault) as well as “non-places”
(Augé), “auratic” and transitory spaces (Benjamin), questions on surface and ornament, scenography, and the notion
of the Gesamtkunstwerk with its normative background.
