FAITH, VALUES, SERVICE & ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
OCTOBER 2014
Gehlen Catholic
School strives to
promote an
openness to God,
to provide a
quality education
and to instill
Catholic values
in a caring,
challenging and
prayerful
environment.
Where your treasure is,
there your heart will be.”
F. A. M. I. L. Y. – Forget About Me, I Love
You. Maybe you have seen this acronym
associated with the word FAMILY before.
The concept is that if we consider the needs
of the family before our own needs we will
be demonstrating the love that Jesus calls
us to, and our families, will thrive. This ties
in perfectly with our seasonal focus for our
gospel value – the lasting treasure of
FAMILY.
From now until the beginning of Advent we
will be discussing, celebrating, and praying
for our families. We will not only consider
our immediate families, but also our school
families, parish families, team families, our
community families and our world families.
As we do this we will be celebrating several
liturgies that bring us together as the family
of God.
Luke 12:34
Homecoming Mass will kick off a week of
activities on Monday, October 6. We will
come together with our Spalding Catholic
family to celebrate all of our former alumni
family and our current school family members
in a special way at the Mass and throughout
the week. At our Respect Life Prayer Service
on October 15, we will pray in a special way
for all the members of God’s family, from the
unborn to the sick and dying. Later in the
month we will be celebrating the Anointing
Mass which is a beautiful celebration where
we all take part in witnessing God’s healing
power through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
Through all of these celebrations we will give
thanks and continue to pray for all of our families. We are truly blessed at Gehlen Catholic
School to be able to experience our faith with
our school family every day! What a treasure!
Parent-Teacher Conferences
PreK-12 conferences will be held on November 4 from 3:40-8:00 p.m.. Elementary
conferences are scheduled. Parents will be
notified of times approximately one week in
advance. Junior high and high school conferences will be held in the LeRoy Kellen
Memorial Gym.

place in the classroom. Please call the school at 546-4181,
and we will schedule you for this free service. What better

From the Nest…Elementary Happenings
Fall has officially arrived! October boasts of beautiful fall colors,
crunching leaves, harvest in full swing and reflections upon the
treasure of all life as it is Respect Life Month. We have the opportunity to show our appreciation for all of God’s human creations -the unborn, the ill, those with handicaps, the dying and the
aged - for all are His beloved children, treasured gifts! Close to
our hearts and minds these days are those among us facing
health issues as well as the less fortunate of the world…those in
our neighborhoods and those a seeming world away.
Where does this respect for life begin? Of course, it starts right
here in another treasure - our families. We see it also in the way
we treat one another, siblings, parents, classmates and teachers, co-workers and newcomers.
The elementary discipline plan, BIRDS (Be
positive, Imitate Jesus, Respect self and
others, Do your best and Show responsibility) was created for this very purpose of positively caring for ourselves and one another.
Gehlen Catholic elementary students have
the tools and skills to demonstrate respect for all of God’s
creations. May God guide us as we remember Our Lord’s
message, “Love one another as I have loved you.”
Where your Treasure is your heart will be.

Saxon Math
Gehlen Catholic K-6 teachers are working overtime to learn
more about and implement the latest curriculum update, Saxon
Math. After reviewing math curriculum materials from various
companies, a committee of teachers shared their findings with
the rest of the staff.
With continued review, the teachers agreed that Saxon Math
would best fit the needs of Gehlen Catholic students. The
Gehlen elementary has been using the Saxon series for more
than 10 years in grades 1-6. This year, the latest edition with
its technological advances and alignment to Iowa Core
Math Curriculum was made possible through the generosity
of a donor ($25,000+). Gehlen was also able to purchase
the kindergarten materials. The new edition will increase
instruction and practice of investigative and problemsolving practices in math as well as providing even more
higher order thinking skills than the older version.
Thank you to the generous donor and to all the teachers
whose goal it is to assure all students know, understand
and are able to be effective and efficient mathematicians.

Celebrate Agriculture! Chamber Ag Day
Gehlen Catholic fourth graders were among the Plymouth
school classes who attended the annual Agricultural Tour on
Thursday, September 17th. The Le Mars Chamber of Commerce, Hy-Vee, Fareway, Sears, Wells Dairy, Dean Foods,
Wal-Mart, the Beef, Sheep and Pork Producers along with
the Farm Bureau sponsored the event. The students visited
four different farms during the morning hours:



Beef Farm operated by Tony Schroeder
Dairy Farm operated by Jim Tentinger
Sheep Farm operated by Mark Loutsch


Swine Farm operated by Tri-S Farms (Schroeder) with
Dean
Hilbrands
One week prior to the tour, a representative of Farm Bureau
provided an informative classroom presentation to prepare
students for the visits. Following the tours, students gathered at Cleveland Park for a picnic provided by the sponsors. Thanks to the many sponsors who help to educate our
young people about the many great contributions agriculture
makes to our quality of life in Iowa and beyond. Thank you
sponsors and farm operators! And…thank you to all farmers
who feed us in so many ways! Each is a treasure!
BIRDS Lessons
Part of Gehlen Catholic’s BIRDS school-wide discipline plan
involves teachers’ work to explicitly teach (share orally,
physically demonstrate and provide student practice)
expected school-wide behaviors. During the first full week of
school, Gehlen Catholic School students in grades 4-6 assisted teachers of students in grades TK-3 in teaching/
modeling expected BIRDS’ behavior for the hallway, restroom, cafeteria, bus and playground. Students were great
listeners/learners and now have the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned!
Each week, teachers will re-teach the behavior expectations
in one area. Check out the week’s focus by reading the News
from the Nest (elementary weekly news from the principal).
While there, learn which classes have been named classes
of the week for their positive behavior choices!

Students 4 Life held their first meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 9, during homeroom. Forty-four students
were in attendance, and many things were discussed. On
Tuesday, September 23, a group of students and adults went
to Sioux City for the Kick Off for the 40 Days for Life campaign. We celebrated mass at Immaculate Conception
Church and then enjoyed praise and worship music. What a
great way to begin the 40 days of prayer to end abortion!

accurate information. The center provides pregnancy tests,
limited ultrasounds, baby supplies, infant to adult clothing,
and support and referral services free to anyone in need

Their mission is to give men and women the knowledge,
support and resources to choose life for their unborn child.
Each classroom has a baby bottle and students are encouraged to put their loose change in the bottle to be given
to Mary’s Choice at the end of the month. If you would like
to make a donation to Mary’s Choice, money can also be
dropped off in the main office at Gehlen. Thank you for

Non-School Athletic/Academic Teams
As more and more teams (i.e. traveling sports teams, academic teams, etc.) are emerging and involving Gehlen Catholic students, it’s appropriate to share the Gehlen Catholic
Board of Education policy on the use of the school name,
colors, etc.
The use of the Gehlen Catholic school name, logo, mascot or
coat of arms for non-school activities is limited to those
wherein the sponsors/coaches meet and abide by all the applicable policies, procedures and requirements of Gehlen
Catholic School and the Diocese of Sioux City including, but
not limited to, the following:
1.
Meet the Safe Environment Requirements of the Diocese
2.

Provide, prior to the season, a schedule; list of coaching

Are pre-approved by the Athletic Director, Administrator,

If parents/volunteers are coaching a team or your child is part
of a team using the Gehlen name, logo, colors or coat of

met. Thank you!
Driving Students—Gehlen Catholic Style
Driving for School Activities
As per diocesan policy, only drivers approved by Catholic
Mutual, the diocesan insurance company, may drive a school
vehicle or transport students in personal or school vehicles for
school-related activities. All employees and volunteers who
will be transporting students in school or personal vehicles for
school related events must have completed a Driver/Vehicle
Information Sheet and completed the Driver’s Safety Course
(on-line at www.scdiocese) prior to the 10th of the month in
which they plan to drive. The completed form will be forwarded to the diocese for review. Once successfully com-
pleted, the school will be notified of the clearance for the
driver. Driver reviews deemed “urgent” (forms turned in after
the 10th of the month and needed immediately) will result in a
cost $13.50 which will be billed to the driver.
Cell Phones and Drivers
As per school/diocesan policy, employees or volunteers driving a school or personal vehicle on school business
(transporting students, school equipment, etc.) are prohibited
from the use of a cell phone (receiving or sending a phone
call; typing or reading a text) while driving.
Come on, Jay Fans! Come on, Clap Your Hands!
Dear Parents,
In an effort to instill the gospel value of respect, we encourage you to please review this policy with your children and
enforce it with them for the enjoyment, safety and respect of
all those attending athletic events. This applies to games at
home and away. Your cooperation is the key to this effort.
All students are to remain seated in the gym/stadium during football and volleyball games. Students in grades 4
and under are to be seated/supervised by parents. Play-
ing football or games outside the gym, on the playground, in the stadium or concession stand area is unacceptable due to liability concerns. DO NOT BRING
FOOTBALLS (OR USE OTHER ITEMS AS BALLS). Thank
you. The safety and comfort of all our guests is important.
Go BIRDS! Go Jays!

Farmers Encouraged to Enroll
Last year, Steve Cronin, a Gehlen Catholic parent and
grandparent, helped fellow Gehlen Catholic families.
Gehlen Catholic is encouraging all farmers to join Steve this
year and enroll in America’s Farmers Grow Communities.
Since 2010 Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto
Fund, has partnered with farmers to invest more than $3
million in schools across rural America. The 2015 Grow
Communities program enrollment is now under way and
Gehlen Catholic is asking YOU – parents, donors, and our
community members to help spread the word. By telling your
farmer friends and neighbors about this amazing opportunity, you could help Gehlen Catholic receive one of these
$2,500 donations. Farmer enrollment is easy. Visit
www.GrowCommunities.com or call 877-267-3332.
Last year, Steve requested his donation be used for tuition
assistance. Other schools have used their farmer-directed
donations to purchase computers and science lab equipment, send teachers to professional development conferences and cover travel expenses for student groups.
The purpose of America’s Farmers Grow Communities is to
make a positive impact in farm communities across the country by partnering with farmers to support the
causes that are most important to
them. In 2015, Grow Communities
will be giving away $3.3 million to
nonprofit organizations nationwide. Now through November
30, farmers may enter for a chance to win a $2,500 donation
for our school.
One winner will be selected at random from each of the eligible
1,324 counties across 40 states. Winning farmers and recipient nonprofits will be announced in January, 2015.
Since its inception, Grow Communities has invested more than
$16 million in 6,000 nonprofit organizations across rural America. The program is part of the America’s Farmers initiative.
America’s Farmers programs, supported by the Monsanto
Fund, have awarded over $23 million to rural communities
since 2010. Connect with America’s Farmers on Facebook or
@AmericasFarmers on Twitter. Join the #GrowCommunities
conversation today and find out more at AmericasFarmers.com.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ELECTION PROCESS
GENERAL ELECTION – NOVEMBER 4, 2014
Visit the Iowa Secretary of State website for voter registration information - https://sos.iowa.gov/elections/voterinformation/index.html
Download and complete the Voter Registration form and return to the County Auditor’s office in the county where you reside
If you don’t have internet access, contact or visit your local County Auditor’s office to get registered
FIND YOUR CANDIDATES!
See the list of all candidates for the November General Election at the Secretary of State’s website at https://sos.iowa.gov/elections/
pdf/2014/general/candlist.pdf
Need help finding the district in which you live? The names of your legislators?
Visit the Iowa Legislature website at https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislators/find and enter your address information at the right side of
the page.
VISIT WITH YOUR CANDIDATES!
All candidates have websites – put your candidate name in your search engine to locate your candidate’s site. Most sites include a
list of upcoming appearances and events. Attend one of those and ask questions. Find out if your incumbent legislator or candidate
holds local gatherings to discuss ideas with constituents.
If you have no internet access, call your County Auditor’s office to get the contact information for your candidate. Call the candidate
and find out about upcoming public appearances.
Contact your candidate directly and ask for an appointment to visit with him or her.
Invite your local candidate to visit your school, attend a school function. Use that opportunity to share all your school has to offer. Ask
your candidate questions about his/her position on school choice and nonpublic education.
QUESTIONS TO ASK
Are you aware of the School Tuition Organization (STO) Tax Credit Program? Do you support this program? Would you support expanding this tax credit cap?
Do you consider yourself a supporter of school choice – the idea that ALL Iowa parents should have access to the educational choice
that best meets their child’s needs?
What are your thoughts on nonpublic schools? Virtual schools? Charter schools? Home Instruction? Public Schools?
Do you/did you have school-age children? What school do/did they attend?
Have you heard of the Education Savings Account (ESA)? This program idea involves parents not enrolling their child in a public
school to receive a deposit of state funds into an authorized savings account to be used for educational expenses such as private
school tuition and tutoring. Would you support the creation of such a program in Iowa?
Give us your feedback. Let Iowa Advocates Executive Director, Trish Wilger, know of the outcome of your legislator visit by contacting
her at [email protected] or 515.323.0687.
VOTE ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4
See your voter registration card or local newspaper for your assigned polling place.
Polls will be open statewide between 7am and 9pm on November 4. Go vote!
Unavailable on Election Day? Consider voting early by absentee ballot. Specific rules and deadlines apply!! Contact your County
Auditor for details or visit the Secretary of State website at https://sos.iowa.gov/elections/electioninfo/absenteeinfo.html
Didn’t register and it’s already November 4? No worries, you can register on Election Day at your local polling location with proper
identification.
Invite others to accompany you on Election Day, and offer to drive those who may have difficulty getting themselves to the polls.
