to prepare the Certificate of Marriage. Please print clearly with blue or black ink. Corrections to the Certificate of

INSTRUCTIONS
1. The marriage license application must be completed and submitted to the Bureau of Vital Statistics (Bureau) or a local
Alaska Court before a marriage license is issued. Both parties must complete their section of the application.
2. Applications should be submitted to the Bureau office or Alaska Court that is closest to where the marriage ceremony will
be performed or where either party can easily pick up the marriage license. Addresses and locations of Alaska Courts
can be found on the Courts’ website: www.state.ak.us/courtdir.htm
3. Marriage licenses to be picked up in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or Juneau must be sent to the respective Bureau office. The
courts in these cities will not accept marriage applications.
4. Either Party may begin the application process. Once the application is received, there is a 3-day waiting period
before the marriage license can be issued.
5. Both Parties must present a government-issued photo ID showing their name and date of birth before a marriage
license can be issued. Both Parties must sign in the presence of a licensing officer and be sworn in by a licensing
officer.
6. Both Parties must be at least 18 years of age for a marriage license to be issued without consent from parents or legal
guardians. Exception: an applicant who is under the age of 18, a member of the U.S. armed forces, and on active duty.
7. If either Party is at least 16 years of age and under 18 years of age, they must have written consent from their legal
parents. A birth certificate must be issued within 30 days of the date of the marriage license and must be submitted with
the marriage application.
8. If either Party is 14 or 15 years of age, a court order allowing the person to be married is required before the marriage
license can be issued.
9. If either Party has previously been married, the number of previous marriages and the dates the marriage(s) ended must
be stated on the application.
10. The license fee is $60.00. This fee does not include the cost of a certified copy of the marriage certificate that is issued
after the marriage is solemnized. Marriage certificate request forms can be downloaded from the Bureau’s website at:
www.vitalrecords.alaska.gov.
11. Please note: Once you have paid the marriage license fee you will have up to one year from the date of the application to
pick up your license. After one year you will need to reapply and pay all license fees.
You must pick up your marriage license at the Vital Statistics office or the Alaska Court
where you sent the marriage license application prior to the marriage ceremony.
*Disclosure of your Social Security Number is mandatory under 42 U.S.C. §666 (a)(13) and may be used for child support purposes.
