North Central placed 12th, while Wheaton was 19th. Additionally, Wheaton was ranked 11th, followed by North Central in 12th in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll on October 13. CCIW news & notes for October 13 • Elmhurst junior running back Josh Williams (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) earned CCIW Offensive Player of the Week honors after he rushed for 249 yards and three touchdowns while leading the Bluejays to a 49-42 double overtime win at Carthage on Saturday. He scored on touchdown runs of five and 20 yards in the second quarter and added a game-tying 25yard scoring run in the first overtime. He averaged 6.1 yards per carry and his 249 rushing yards ranks as the third-highest single-game total in Elmhurst history. • Illinois Wesleyan sophomore defensive lineman Kyle Venhuizen (Evergreen Park, Ill./H.S.) was named the CCIW Defensive Player of the Week after he totaled 11 tackles (nine solo), four tackles-for-loss, three sacks and a forced fumble during the Titans’ 31-7 win over Millikin on Saturday. His sacks accounted for -16 yards and his tackles-for-loss totaled -19 yards. Millikin was held to 159 yards of total offense. • Wheaton senior punter/kicker Sam Cote (Wheaton, Ill./Academy) earned CCIW Special Teams Player of the Week honors after he accounted for eight of the Thunder’s 20 points during a 20-13 win at Augustana on Saturday. His 25-yard field goal in the first half gave the Thunder a 3-0 lead and his 27-yard field goal in the third quarter tied the game at 13-13. He also had a seasonlong 55-yard punt that was fumbled by the Vikings and resulted in a Wheaton touchdown two plays later to give the Thunder a 20-13 lead. • North Central sophomore kick returner Alex Ulmer (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Valor Christian) had a 91yard kickoff return for a touchdown during the Cardinals’ 58-26 win at North Park on Saturday. It was the first kickoff return of his career and was also the longest kickoff return in North Central history. The previous record of 90 had been achieved twice, most recently in 1989 and also against North Park. • Illinois Wesleyan junior wide receiver Artie Checchin (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) caught 10 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown against Millikin. Sophomore defensive back Richard Motter (Dayton, Ohio/Butler) had a 63-yard interception return for a touchdown as well as a blocked punt against Elmhurst. • Augustana freshman running back Austin Chausse (Nokomis, Ill./H.S.) rushed for a game-high 96 yards on 11 carries against Wheaton on Saturday. The Vikings finished with 171 rushing yards. Jack Asquini (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and Tim Maroder (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) each had eight tackles apiece. • North Park freshman wide receiver Devin Childress (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) had nine catches for 117 yards and three touchdowns against North Central on Saturday. Junior wide receiver Terrance Wright (Chicago, Ill./Hope) had five catches for 92 yards and a touchdown as the Vikings finished with 349 yards through the air. • Millikin sophomore defensive back Jowonis Edwards (Normal, Ill./Community) finished with nine tackles and three pass breakups against Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday.
