On Thursday, August 21, the police brought a 9-month old
boxer mix that had a shot-gun blast to the face in to the
Kindness Animal Hospital. The family was ready to
euthanize, but the Practice owner wanted to try to save her.
The family surrendered the dog to the practice – she was
in very bad shape.
On July 24 GreenWheaton, Women Business Owners of
Montgomery County, and the Wheaton & Kensington
Chamber of Commerce teamed up for a Summer Green
Drinks Networking Yelp Happy Hour – at the Hollywood
East Café in Westfield Wheaton Mall, 11160 Veirs Mill
Road, Wheaton, MD 20902 (240-290-9988).

So far she has had 3 surgeries, and probably will need more,
but she is doing well. Fortunately, as it was a shotgun,
none of the shot hit her brain, her trachea, or any of her
major organs.
The police have an article (see below) on their website and
facebook page, the Washington Post has an article online,
and WTOP has reported on the story and updates. The
police also had a press conference at the hospital for the
TV stations.

Saving Ruby – Kindness Animal Hospital is in the news!

breathing; she had been shot on the left side of her face
and shoulder with a shotgun. Officer Michelle Ballor
immediately loaded Ruby into her police vehicle and
drove her to the Kindness Animal Hospital located at
2130 University Boulevard West in Wheaton.
At the animal hospital, Officer Ballor was met by Doctor
Jeff Zolkiewicz, who immediately began life-saving
measures.

Veterinarians at the hospital determined that Ruby would
need extensive medical care to save her life. Officer Noah
Leotta spoke with Ruby’s owners and suggested that they
consider surrendering Ruby to the hospital rather than
euthanizing her - so that she could have the opportunity
to live.

September 4 Update from Kindness Animal Hospital
Ruby continues to do well. Next week she is tentatively
scheduled with a specialist for reconstructive surgery on her
mouth and neck in the hopes that she will be able to begin
eating. She also will need some dental work, but she is
strong and healthy and a very happy girl.
When Sergeant Dawn Felsen visited Ruby in the hospital
later in the week, she learned that Ruby was improving
after undergoing several surgeries but needed to undergo
additional procedures. Sergeant Felsen discovered that
Doctor Jeff Zolkiewicz had absorbed all of the costs for
these surgeries.
We are so appreciative of all the love and support Ruby has
received over the last couple of weeks. Thanks to everyone
for your prayers and support! We will keep Ruby’s progress
updated with pictures on our hospital website:
www.KindnessHospital.com
Doctor Marc Katz, one of Doctor Zolkiewicz’s colleagues
at the hospital, says that, “Doctor Zolkiewicz has made
it his mission to save this dog.”
Due to the nature of her injuries, her appearance, and
possible need for future specialized care, the hospital staff
does not think that Ruby is a good candidate for adoption.
But there is great news. Doctor Zolkiewicz recognizes that
Ruby is a real “gem” and has decided to adopt her.
and Facebook page:
www.facebook.com/KindnessAnimalHospital
We’re thrilled that Ruby has a new “leash on life” with
Doctor Zolkiewicz and the staff at Kindness Animal
Hospital and the entire police department are all rooting
for Ruby to make a full recovery.
