College News THE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER FOR MIDDLE AND SENIOR SCHOOL From the Headmaster I read an interesting article this week on the internet entitled, ‘How to become a Film and Television Actor – 10 Easy steps to becoming an Actor’. At Assembly this week, I shared some of the salient points with the boys which are appropriate, no matter what goal they have set for themselves. The article opened with these words, “(your) dream can become a reality if you are willing to put in the time, training, dedication, passion and patience required to make it (happen)”. The bottom line boys is you have to work hard at your craft and that means having the dedication to put in long hours and to be always striving to improve on your most recent performance. You have to be prepared also to make sacrifices including moving away from your family in order to go where the work is. For some of our Seniors this reality is just starting to unfold. Some Year 12 students are contemplating studying or working interstate. However, along the way when putting in these long hours, remember to look after yourself. Seek to keep a balance in life and find time for enjoyable recreation. Also, remember to eat well, sleep well and aim to do one hour of physical exercise each day if you want your body to cope with the stresses of a high workload. I wish all our Seniors every success in achieving their academic goal this year and I urge them all to work hard in these final weeks and to finish the job. I regret to advise that the Head of Middle School, Dr Tony Chittenden, will be on sick leave until the end of October. We wish Dr Chittenden a full and speedy recovery. Special congratulations this week goes to Team Pi (Andrew Su, Brian Chen and Robert Kopel) who have won the Open Robot Soccer at the Robocup Junior Australia Open Championships and became National Champions. Also we congratulate our first Tennis team (Jack Jaede, Jie Dong, Lewis Edwards, Nick Liddy, Tom Liddy and Mitchell Wilson) who won the State Schoolboy Tennis Championship in Rockhampton and now go on to compete in the National finals in Albury later this year. 9 OCTOBER 2014 Upcoming Events Saturday 11 October 5.00pm Interschool Christian Fellowship Leadership Service and Progressive Dinner Sunday 12 October BBC Sailing - Manly 5.30pm Rudd House Chapel Monday 13 October Junior Music Week Tuesday 14 October 1.00pm GPS Track and Field: College Dash and College Kilometre - Noblet Oval 1.30pm Junior School Solo Competition Final College Hall Wednesday 15 October Prefect Announcement 6.30pm Junior Gala Concert - College Hall Thursday 16 October 5.30pm Robotics Annual Prize Night and AGM College Hall Friday 17 October GPS Track and Field Meet 6 - BBC Host at Nudgee College 7.00 Music Dinner - The Greek Club, Southbank Graeme McDonald HEADMASTER On CONEQT REMINDER • Term 4 Squad Swimming Information DRINKS FOR DAVE FRIDAY 17 OCTOBER Earlier this year, BBC father David Campbell was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease which is affecting his nerves and muscles. During the latter part of last term, each Year 8 student was part of a group that had the task of modernising one of Jesus’ parables whilst maintaining the original meaning. This was done through students producing movies that they themselves starred in. The best of these presentations was then recommended by Christian Education teachers for the finals that were held at the second last ISCF lunch time meeting for the term. Congratulations to the winning team of Caleb Pennell, Hunter King and Ethan Tracy whose “Parable Movie” will be shown at a Junior School Chapel and Middle School Assembly this term. ISCF Leadership Service and Progressive Dinner The 2014 ISCF Leadership service and Progressive dinner will be held this Saturday 11 October commencing with Leadership Dedication service in the Chapel at 5.00pm. One of the Somerville House leaders will be the preacher at the service. Students and staff will then travel by bus to three BBC homes where they will enjoy entrée, main course and dessert. The theme of the night is “Countries of the World” where students can be creative and come dressed from the country of their choice. Term 4 Ministry Support Breakfast The Ministry Support Breakfast will be held on Wednesday 22 October from 7.00am to 8.00am in the Conference Room. Our speakers at the breakfast will be a number of departing Seniors. This is not a morning to miss. RSVP to Reverend Graham Cole on 3309 3558 or Thomas McPherson by Monday 20 October. 40 Hour Famine This week is the final week when students can return their money and booklets. We are already well over the $17,000 mark with the Famine leaders still having a reasonable amount of money to be counted. Final results for 2014 will be released at assembly on Wednesday 22 October where students who have participated will be acknowledged. These funds raised will certainly make a substantial difference in the lives of many Rwandan people. Reverend Graham Cole and Mr Thomas McPherson CHAPLAIN AND ASSOCIATE CHAPLAIN From the Map Centre BBC is committed to raising awareness and developing understanding in students, teachers and parents about the complex nature of giftedness. To this end we have subscribed to a series of articles by Michele Juratowitch, Director of Clearing Skies. Michele has been a School Counsellor and worked with gifted students for over 20 years. Please find below this week’s entry. For further information, please contact the Map Centre on 3309 3668. Ms Sandra Lummis HEAD OF CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT Academic Emotions Reinhard Pekrun, Professor of Psychology at the University of Munich, has for many years, been conducting research into a range of human emotions that are associated with learning. The emotions found to significantly influence students’ learning are: curiosity, delight, enjoyment, engagement, flow, hope, relief, pride, confusion, frustration, anxiety, hopelessness, boredom, anger and shame. Collectively referred to as academic emotions, these emotions are initially formed within the family and parents continue to positively and negatively shape students’ learning experiences throughout their education. Anxiety, shame associated with failure and pride in success are emotions based upon very early experiences. The impact of academic emotions on educational performance, especially when combined with goal orientations, is thought to be greater than the student’s cognitive ability or motivation. Pekrun and his colleagues identified that academic emotions play an important role in behaviours such as: interest, persistence, self-regulation, well-being and performance. Academic emotions are also related to motivation, learning strategies, cognitive resources and academic achievement. Pekrun continued to explore the role of emotions in learning and proposed that a reciprocal relationship exists between academic emotions and student achievement, with one influencing the other over time. Parents involved in their child’s education and teachers interested in factors that shape student performance will have observed these reciprocal influences operating at home and in the classroom. It might be expected that positive emotions promote, while negative emotions impede, learning. It is not so simple. There are cognitive benefits associated with positive emotions, including the enhancement of flexible, creative and holistic problem solving capacities. Counterintuitively, negative emotions also have a positive role in learning as these emotions encourage focused, detail-oriented and analytical thinking. Negative emotion is critical when students are confused, struggling to grasp a new concept, establishing a new way of thinking or are engaged in deeper learning. Confusion is the best predictor of learning and students frequently experience the lowest levels of enjoyment under conditions when they are learning the most. When learning challenging material, students typically experience a progression of emotions. A student might start with feeling curiosity about new information; progress to confusion and frustration when a concept is not easy to understand or a skill not easy to acquire; experience relief and pride as learning is mastered. Pekrun stresses the importance of understanding academic emotions and the role they play in academic learning in order to support students’ achievement. © Michele Juratowitch [email protected] Co-curricular activities TENNIS There were numerous tennis activities held during the recent school holidays. Any boy in Years 7 to 11 in 2015 who wishes to debate next year in either the GPS or QDU competitions must participate in the trials. Trials for the Senior A team will be held separately. Potential debaters will be asked to present a two minute speech on this topic: ‘Debating should be compulsory for all students’. Boys may argue for or against this proposition. Students can start debating at any age, prior experience is not necessary as full training is provided. Any boy interested in trying out must contact Ms Christopher at Student Services or by email. Details of the trials for the 2015 Year 5 and 6 teams will be advertised at a later date. When are the GPS and QDU debates held? GPS debates are held over seven Friday evenings in Terms 1 and 2.
