Alberta Deaf News
October 2014
Message from the Editor:
Wow! I feel like we just barely got done with summer, and already I’m catching myself looking forward to the holiday season! It’s only a few weeks until Thanksgiving now,
when we had sunny mid-20s weather just two weeks ago!
As the temperature drops, the activity level in the Alberta Deaf community is heating
up as people have now settled back into their daily routines and are eager to roll up their
sleeves and get out there! Every community member’s participation in local, regional and
national activities is valued whether they are taking a leadership role or simply participating in as many or as few events as they like that match their interests and preferred
activity level. Let’s set the tone for a warm and sociable atmosphere in our community to
help shield against the annual test of patience and endurance that is an Albertan winter!
Of course, I am doing my part as well! While ADN has been running for more than
two years now, there is always things that can be changed and improved upon, and I have
incorporated the latest feedback I’ve received into this issue. Do let me know any time of
your thoughts, questions or concerns regarding ADN or anything included within those
pages at [email protected].
Enjoy your holiday turkeys, and remember—leftover Thanksgiving dinners make
GREAT cold lunch sandwiches for the next week!

ADN Editor
Greetings to all Deaf Albertans and Deaf community members!
I am sure that you all are ready for the impeding temperature drop followed
by Thanksgiving and Halloween celebrations. Cheers!
On to the updates for this month:
Barbara Revay, Chair of DHA board recently acknowledged the Deaf/HH
community’s concern over re-branding via changing their name to Deaf Alberta and Hard of Hearing Alberta. CEO Joanne Pawelek will overlook a process to decide on this issue within 18 months.
13 representatives total from AAD, ACSD, ADSA, ASLIA, CAD, EAD and EFDB
attended the DHA Advisory Committee on Deaf Alberta led by Cindy Pilz,
Manager of Deaf Services. The meeting was very successful and another will
be held in early 2015.
The AAD board meeting on September 20 went very well and included
reports and/or action plans from D/HH Camp 2015, CDYLC 2014/2016, and
the Edmonton ‘mega-event’ of 2017.
Shauna Durston is now the host Chairperson of the 4th Canadian Deaf
Women's Conference. She will have her own executive host committee and
team which will do their own event planning independently of AAD. Congrats and Handwaves for Shauna and her team - Good Luck!
Mathew Kuntz, ADN Vlogger will finish his contract work on October
5th after submitting his last work of vlogging ADN October 2014 issue, since
he is moving into his new positions as EAD President and AAD’s board director representing that organization. We will miss his excellent vlogging. Congrats/Handwaves for Mat - Good Luck!
Special Urgent Announcement for Deaf Seniors!
Please contact me via email or letter if you are interested to receive a
complimentary iPad for one year to learn how to use it for your individual
uses such as communication, socializing, and gaming. So far, I have received
only 3 interested applicants as of Sept. 25 and there are 7-8 iPads available.
We are going to hire people who will offer technical support and help you
use the iPad, hopefully youths. Good Luck! Deadline: Tuesday, October 28th

AAD’s annual general meeting has been postponed to Saturday, November 15 at 3 pm. The board and ‘pre-registered’ attendees will meet until 5
pm, have a pizza break until 6:30 pm, and then proceed with an open forum
for all attendees to discuss key issues and actions.
Finally, I would like to say something special for our superb star, Calvin
Novak due to two things; finishing his successful 2 terms as EAD President
and becoming our EAD Past President, and succeeding in his role as our popular and cheerful Chairperson of our very successful annual cornfest with
over 120+ paid attendants from the diverse Deaf community. He deserves
many thanks for his excellent voluntary services over the past 8 years as
Handtalk Bar Director and EAD President. He deserves a nice break until he
feels ready to make a grand comeback like Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones!
Many Thanks! Enjoy your very busy month of October!

EAD Bingo/Casino Director’s message
Calvin Novak, EAD Past President and I would like
to thank our wonderful bingo volunteers at EAD's bingo events so far this year on July 7 and August 25.
Now, I am eagerly looking forward to having more
bingo events on five future dates: October 13th, December 8th, February 9th, April 27th and June 15th,
with two shifts each day. We are looking for volunteers
to help out with those shifts, particularly hearing volunteers for the posts of paymaster and volunteer interpreter. For more info, please feel free to contact me in
person or via e-mail: [email protected]
Many Thanks for your wonderful community support with helping EAD's fundraising to keep EAD active and advocating for its members and its beloved
Deaf community in Edmonton. Keep in touch!

ASL Anthems in the CFL
The AAD board would like to sincerely thank Emil
and Rylyn Kvarnberg of CAD and Calvin Novak of EAD
for helping with arrangements to have ASL signers
sign the national anthem during local CFL games in
honor of the WFD’s International Week of the Deaf
from September 22-28. Thanks to both football clubs
for their participation, and a very special thanks to
our ASL signers: Chrissy Steele of Edmonton, and Cher
Homersham and Anderson Frose of Calgary. Both local clubs won their games—clearly our ASL signers
were good luck charms for the teams!

Chrissy Steele Signed ASL O’Canada at the Eskimos Game
I want to thank AAD for asking me to sign O'Canada on Friday, September 26, 2014 at the game of Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan
RangeRiders. I was able to bring my daughter Cornella and friend, Lorraine Rutledge with me that night.
It was an interesting experience being on the field meeting a few of
Eskimos staff. I found that standing in front of the huge crowd and
many cameras was something for which I didn’t have the foresight at all.
Before everything started, I met a former Edmonton football player
who played about five years. I was invited to meet the club president/
CEO, Lan Rhodes. I have learned that he has a deaf sister. He never
learned how to sign but he wished that he could communicate with his
sister more. He would like to see more of ASL version O'Canada in the
future. He said that it would not be the last time that a Deaf person
signs for the game. Lan and his wife have a dog in training to help people with disabilities.
We had a great time meeting some of important people in the CEO
booth where we ended up staying the whole night watching football
and keeping ourselves warm. I also received my own Eskimo jersey with
my name on the back. I want to thank AAD again for allowing me to be
part of Deaf Awareness Week.
