Mountains followed by a show in Sydney
and Melbourne. It was certainly a privilege
to host Carsten Knudsen. Then we had the
Big Birthday Bash with 100 guests including folk dancers, line dancers and many
people celebrating their birthday with
family and friends. Fastelavn followed
with a new barrel made by Alan; it was
bashed mercilessly by kids in wonderful
costumes. It was hard work to pick the
winners of the best dressed prizes, have a
look at the photos and see what you think.
In the meantime, the committee has also
had time to think about the big kitchen
renovation and I think you’ll be surprised
by the ambitious plans. The courtyard
project will also be going ahead in April, so
it’s full steam ahead for the old club.

Carsten Knudsen Show was a huge success
– also with the playgroup, who was treated
to a special morning show. Carsten then
spent Sunday afternoon with ukulele players from Brisbane before he took off to a
Ukulele Festival in Katoomba in the Blue

What’s on at the Danish Club?

It’s the first Café Danmark of the year, time to get back to the club and meet up with
new and old friends. The ‘smørrebrød’ menu varies from time to time, but you’ll
usually find ‘rullepølse’ (spicy rolled pork), smoked salmon, roast beef, ‘leverpostej’,
roast pork and ‘Esrom’ cheese on the menu. And hot dogs. The bar offers Tuborg
and Carlsberg beer varieties imported from Denmark just for us as well as several
Australian brews. If you like a glass of wine with your food, we have a good variety
of whites, reds and sparkling on offer. And check out our tempting array of licorice
and other lollies from Denmark!
It’s also an opportunity to buy delicious Danish pastries, rye bread and other specialty
breads, organic biscuits and crisp breads direct from Britt’s Organic Bakery. Tea
offers smallgoods and quality meats from Heinz Meats, the Danish butcher at
Woolloongabba, as well as her own goodies including remoulade. Order in advance
and pick up at the café.

Vores danske legegruppe mødes hver fredag i Heimdals lokaler fra 9.30 til kl 11.30.
Aldersgruppen er fra 0 til 5 år, søskende til yngre børn er selvfølgelig velkommen i ferierne.
Vi starter altid med formiddagskaffe og hjemmebagte boller, efterfølgende varierer
aktiviteterne med fri leg, hoppeborg, tegning og sanglege mv. Vi skiftes til at medbringe
boller og tilbehør.
Vi betaler $2 hver gang per familie, medlemskab af Playgroup Queensland og den danske
klub Heimdal er en betingelse.

Easter is traditionally a good time to enjoy a Danish smorgasbord – invite your friends
and family along to an Easter feast at the Danish Club. It’s delicious with many
favourites on the menu including pickled herring, smoked salmon, fish wedges with
remoulade, roast pork with red cabbage, leverpostej, roast beef, rullepølse and
cheese. The bar is stocked with Tuborg and Carlsberg brewed in Denmark and a
variety of snaps – how does a cold Red Aalborg or Jubilæum sound?

The Carsten Knudsen Show
Carsten Knudsen at the Danish Club Saturday 1 February 2014
Carsten took the initiative and contacted the Danish Club about 2 years ago to arrange an
evening’s entertainment at the Danish Club in Brisbane, and the day finally came when
around 100 members and guests could enjoy his show with comedy and musical
entertainment.
When in Denmark Carsten of course performs in Danish, however, in consideration of
the Australians in the audience, the show was performed mostly in English – some
things you just can’t translate but it was classic Carsten Knudsen and all enjoyed
themselves immensely.
It’s not often we get the opportunity to present a live performance by a talented Danish
musician and we would like to thank Carsten very much for making the trip to Australia
and sharing his talent with us.
Friday 28 February at Café Danmark we will screen a DVD given to us by Carsten
Knudsen of a show in Denmark – this will be the first official meeting of the Carsten
Knudsen Fan Club of Brisbane.
Soren Nielsen has been appointed President of the Carsten Knudsen Fan Club and will
conduct the DVD presentation of the show.
Silkeborg is located at the Gudenå River in the middle of the peninsula of Jutland, and is
slightly west of the geographical centre of Denmark. It’s located in a region known as
Søhøjlandet and its surroundings are regarded among the most beautiful places in Denmark.
The landscape is dominated by lakes, extensive woodlands (like Silkeborg Forests) and some
of the highest points in Denmark, including Himmelbjerget. Silkeborg has a population of
42,910 (1 January 2013).
History Although Silkeborg city was not formally founded until 1844, the history of the city
may be traced back to the 15th century. At this time a castle was located on an islet in the
lake and the city name (‘silk castle’) may have originated from this castle. The castle no
longer exists, but excavations can be seen on the castle islet about 1 km from the town
square.
In 1844 the two paper manufacturing brothers Christian and Michael Drewsen of the
corporation Drewsen og Sønner moved from Copenhagen to Jutland to start a paper mill.
Next to the Gudenå River, the brothers started Silkeborg Papirfabrik (Silkeborg Papermill)
with the idea to use the water power as an energy source, as a resource for paper
production, and the river as a transport route. Michael Drewsen was responsible for the daily
management of the mill, and he was later acknowledged as the founder of the city.
Economy For many years the paper mill was the most prominent business in the city, but
after financial difficulties and a change of ownership, it closed in 2000. Renewal and
reconstruction of the buildings in the large industrial area
made room for a hotel, a cinema, a concert hall, restaurants
and cafés. A large number of new apartment buildings have
also been constructed on the site.
The city is notable for many car dealerships, and the
economically significant presence of the headquarters of Jyske
Bank, Denmark's third largest bank.
Silkeborg Museum: The oldest preserved building in the city
is Silkeborg Manor from 1767. The building now houses the
Silkeborg Museum where you can see the naturally mummified corpse of the Tollund man, who lived during the 4th century BC.
City square: The old city square (Torvet) forms the centre of Silkeborg and together with the
surrounding streets is a pedestrian area. The city square is
surrounded by Hotel Dania (Silkeborg’s oldest hotel, founded in
1848), the Old Town Hall and Silkeborg Church. On the city square
there are two fountains and the bronze statue of Michael Drewsen.
On Saturdays the weekly market is located here.
Aqua: The freshwater aquarium Aqua (distinct from the Danish pop
group) is one of the region’s best visited sights. In the indoor
aquarium and outdoor animal park, fish and animals can be examined. The exhibited animals
are fish, birds, otters, beavers and raccoons.
Silkeborg Bad: The former sanatorium, Silkeborg Bad served as headquarters for the Nazi
German Gestapo during WWII. In 1944, the priest and playwright Kaj Munk was shot by the
Gestapo near Silkeborg. Today a Bunker Museum is located in the beautiful park and the old
sanatorium buildings house an art museum. Many of the museum’s sculptures can also be
seen in the park for free. The natural spring, Arnakkekilden, is located in the park next to the
lake Ørnsø. Danish brewery Carlsberg has used the water for bottled spring water for many
years.
Himmelbjerget: The third tallest point in Denmark is called Himmelbjerget (147 m). It’s a
sight closely linked to the city as all summer tour boats leave the harbor of Silkeborg for the
hills of Himmelbjerget, including the historic steamboat Hjejlen ("The Golden Plover").
The lake fountains: The fountains in Silkeborg Langsø
are among the largest in northern Europe and are a
landmark of the city and the lakes. The fountains are
located in the lake just outside the city hall and were
constructed in 1970. The fountains have a magnificent
light show and after dark the water cascades changes
color. The change in color has a program of 30–40
minutes.
Regatta Since 1899 Silkeborg has hosted the
"Ildfestregatta" ("fire party regatta"). The event is held
every third year with the next regatta to be held on 13-16 August 2014. During the regatta
the city streets are closed to traffic at night time and you can experience live music all over
town as well as different stalls and an amusement park. The houses next to the Gudenå River
are decorated with colored lamps
and so are the many boats entering
the port.

home city of COBRA painter Asger
Jorn, and many of his paintings can
be seen at the Museum Jorn,
Silkeborg. The painting shown is

Notable mentions in popular culture
In the 1973 film The Day of the Jackal, the main character dons a number of aliases
throughout the story. One of them is a Danish schoolteacher named Per Lundqvist, who
claims to herald from the town of Silkeborg.
In the opening episode of season six of Parks and Recreation Heidi Klum's character receives
an award for women in government, representing Silkeborg.
Inspired by an Asger Jorn print in a band member's home in Dublin, Ireland, Silkeborg is now
also the name of an Irish band.

The Big Birthday
Bash of 2014
A bunch of our Danish Folk Dancers
had big birthdays to celebrate this
year, so a special birthday bash was
held for members turning 60, 70 and
75 years of age.
Walt Disney did ‘101 Dalmatians’,
well, not to be outdone, we hosted
101 guests (and not just in black
and white) for a 3 course dinner with
a smoked salmon starter, roast pork
for the main course and an old fashioned dessert, ‘abemad’ in Danish = monkey food,
which consists of sliced apples, bananas, peaches and oranges, chopped walnuts
and dark chocolate covered in a Danish dessert sauce called ‘råcreme’ – whipped
cream with egg yolks, sugar and vanilla – yum!
The birthday boys and girls were properly celebrated and a huge and very impressive
birthday cake had been prepared, and this went down well with the coffee after the
meal.
The Folk Dancers performed a traditional dance, Lancier (handy to know in case you
are invited to a party by the Danish Queen Margrethe, as you will be expected to
dance the Lancier). After the Lancier, the dancing went into another groove
altogether with Michael Whitmore in charge of the musical entertainment. In fact,
they were dancing all night – including line dancing by a visiting line dancing group
and the dancers kept up the pace right up till closing time, well done!

jeg have …
Sunday 9 February we celebrated
Fastelavn at the club with lots of
children and adults dressing up and
playing Danish games – and then
bashing the big barrel filled with
goodies.
‘KUPALEJA’ provided the music with
help from singer Storm and we
enjoyed Bro Bro Brille without too
many tears from the kids getting
caught.
This year all the children had really excelled in dressing
up – the level of detail and use of fantasy was impressive,
and also very simple means had been applied to get a
great result. The grown-ups hadn’t done too badly
either.
We had a Mummy, a Chinese lady, several princesses, a
lady bug, a bee, several skeletons, Snow White, a soldier
in camouflage, a mermaid, a witch, a pilot, a cowboy,
Vikings and many others.
After eating just a few fastelavnsboller, we gathered around the big
barrel in the courtyard – beautifully
designed by Tommy Brandi and
constructed by Alan Przybylak –
many thanks to both for their
contribution.
The little ones had the first go and it
took more than 2 rounds by all kids
before the barrel lost the fight and
the goodies spilled out. It was good
to see that the bigger kids made
sure that the smaller kids got their
share of the loot.

Kitchen renewal Sketches and ideas
for the renewal of our kitchen based
on the grant for $32,250 received
from the Queensland Gambling
Community Benefit Fund were
discussed. We’ll work hard to get as
much value from the grant as possible.
The committee is prepared to contribute more funding if required.
Courtyard We have decided to
proceed at the club’s cost. The fascia
and awning at the entrance will also
be replaced.
Scandinavian Festival 2014 The
new festival date is14 September
2014 – work is already in progress.
Membership We’ve reached the 250
member mark, but are still chasing
around 13 members for membership
fees for the current year.
Events Eskil Romme and Himmerland

we’ve scheduled a concert for 17 April

Beer, snaps and licorice The new
order is expected to arrive just before
the March Café Danmark and Soren is
confident that we’ll have julebryg in

beer from Tuborg and Faxe and the
very popular Faxe Kondi. We’ve also
placed an order for various chocolate
products to arrive in time for Easter,
so make sure you put delicious Anthon
Berg on your Easter egg wish list.
Grants Our grant application for the
book project has been rejected by the
Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund
– we’ll explore other avenues.
Money The first seven months show a
surplus of approx. $28,000 after
payment of our annual insurance bill.

Et IC4-tog gik fredag eftermiddag i
stå i tunnelen under Storebælt
Et IC4-tog sidder fast på grund af teknisk
fejl på toget og er gået i stå i tunnelen
under Storebælt.
Men faktisk dateres figuren helt tilbage til
perioden 100 f.Kr. til 100 e.Kr. og den er
nu udstillet på Nationalmuseet til prompt
og pragt. Som lidt ekstra pynt på kransekagen, så er den den første af sin slags
nogensinde fundet i Danmark.
Det drejer sig om to sammenkoblede tog,
hvor den bagerste vogn er gået i stå.
Derfor er man ved at evakuere
passagererne over i den forreste vogn.
Passagerne er nødt til at gå ud af den
bagerste togvogn og gå langs tunnelen for
at komme frem til den forreste vogn.
Den bagerste vogn vil blive bugseret væk
på et senere tidspunkt.
IC4-toget standsede i tunnellen omkring
klokken 17.30, og passagerne sad i toget i
omkring en time, før evakueringen
startede.
Romersk Danefæ fundet på Falster
En 2000 år gammel bronzefigur er fundet
ved Falsters Virke nær Falkerslev på
Falster.
Figuren forestiller satyren Papposilenos,
som i romersk mytologi var en fast følgesvend til vinguden Bacchus. Figuren blev
fundet i efteråret 2010 af medlemmer af
Furesø Detektorgruppe med Hanne Jensen
i spidsen.
Den er meget velbevaret, og man troede

1600-1700-tallet, og at fundet derfor ikke
var værd at gå videre med.
»Det er mit første metaldetektorfund
overhovedet. Da figuren dukkede op,
syntes vi alle, at den så ny ud, og at det
derfor nok ikke var noget særligt, men jeg
tog alligevel figuren med hjem«, fortæller
Hanne Jensen i en pressemeddelelse fra
Nationalmuseet.
Ifølge mytologien var Papposilenos den
ældste af følgesvendene, og det var ham,
der førte an i løjerne, når romerne drak
sig i hegnet. Derfor ser man ofte Papposilenos afbildet bærende på vinsække,
med vinfade eller båret på et æsel, fordi
han var plørefuld.
»Figuren har haft den funktion, at den har
siddet på sengestolpen højst sandsynligt
sammen med en lignende figur- de sås
ofte i par. Den refererer til den romerske
overklassekultur, og i den forbindelse har
den helt sikkert været en ære for folk at
eje«, forklarer Kasper Søsted fra Museum
Lolland-Falster.
Han uddyber, at dansken dengang så
meget op til romerne, og at de så vidt
muligt forsøgte at efterligne romernes
måde at holde fest på, hvilket blandt
andet inkluderede en heftig drikkekultur.
Papposilenos-figurens fine udnævnelse
som danefæ betyder, at der venter dens
opdager Hanne Jensen en dusør.
