FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB In our Gospel this weekend Jesus says that many are invited to the banquet, “but few are chosen.” This may sound rather contradictory since we presume that if one is invited, they have already been chosen. However, the choosing is not what God does from among all those invited; the choosing is what we do in our response to God. This response is a choice on our part to do all we need to do in our daily living to witness to the presence of the king‐ dom of God already in our midst. We respond each day in many ways to that invita on to come to the banquet of our King. When we listen a en vely to another and in our listening strengthen and encourage that person, we are choosing to come to God’s banquet at life’s end. When we help clothe the poor, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, we are choosing to accept His invita on long before the wedding feast of heaven. All peoples are invited to God’s banquet but we must be clothed in the wedding garment which we put on the day of our bap sm when we became His beloved sons and daughters. In the journey of this life we o en forget about the heavenly banquet prepared for us at every Eucharis c celebra on, a foretaste and a promise of a life to come where the sorrows and pains of this life will be for‐ go en and healed completely. What do the invita ons to the “wedding feast” look like in this life? Some mes we must choose between doing good or not. At other mes we must choose to be a en ve to another in spite of our own inconvenience, or we must choose to be faithful to prayer, open to God’s Presence on a daily basis despite our busy schedules. We are reminded this week‐ end that we need to send back our RSVP to the wedding banquet to which we have been in‐ vited and we are called to do that every day of our lives. Religious educa on classes are not op onal for the students whose families are reg‐ istered in the parish. Nor is it enough to send your children to class but not bring them to weekend Mass. Parents who do so are sending mixed signals which only serve to undermine what we are teaching them about the faith and causing confusion in their minds. Such par‐ ents could well be the individual in our Gospel this weekend who was thrown out into the darkness and I’m quite certain that none of us would like to find ourselves in that posi on. Next weekend our parish will celebrate World Mission Sunday. This year we are invited to reach out and help build the Church in Mongolia, the world’s youngest Catholic Church, as well as local churches throughout the Missions, in the most remote areas across our world. Through the work of these churches, and their witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God’s love and mercy, His hope and peace. Please keep the Missions in your daily prayers. Please come prepared next weekend to give generously in the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. For more information, please visit www.IAmAMissionary.org. 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time "He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they re‐ fused to come." Why? What made the king's invita on so distasteful to these guests? Accord‐ ing to the parable, either the guests were too busy with their farms and their businesses, or else they were downright hos le to the en re idea: they "laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them." What could possibly explain this resistance? Perhaps we have a clue in the puzzling conclusion of today's Gospel. One of the sec‐ ond‐string guests pulled in from the streets came to the feast "not dressed in a wedding gar‐ ment." The man knew he was guilty, hence his silence. And the king's punishment suggests that the fellow ought to have known be er. This "wedding garment" calls to mind the prepara‐ on of our souls necessary to join in the great "wedding feast of the Lamb" (Rv 19:9), that is, heaven. This man was apparently just too lazy to get ready. He presumed that having received an invita on to the banquet was enough, that nothing was required of him. Not so. He should have demonstrated his gra tude by dressing appropriately. And what of the first‐string guests? Some were too busy to bother coming; others were furious that they had been invited at all. Now, where do we fit in? Are we more concerned with worldly work than with spiritual growth? Are we offended by the very sugges on that we might need to "dress up" our souls? Or are we the disinterested Chris an, willing to feast but too lazy to foster his faith? Jesus gave his life to open the gates of heaven for us. Let's show our gra tude by preparing radiant, beau ful souls worthy of the heavenly wedding feast. HOSPITALIZED AND CONTINUING IN HOME CARE. The Prayers of the Rosary The Apostle's Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen The Our Father Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Families & the Gospel FINANCIAL NEWS Fiscal Year July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015 Offertory Totals for the week of October 5, 2014 October 12 Mt 22: 1-14 Today’s gospel speaks about “unworthy wedding guests.” What makes a “worthy” guest? Presence and presents are not enough. The greatest gift we can give is support to the couple as they voyage through life together because marriage naturally contains within it the fields of disappointment. Think of the weddings you’ve attended. Have you been a “worthy guest?” Weekly Offertory Misc. Income Parts 1 & 2 Available Online Log into our Ss.
