BCVA Congress 2014
“This year’s BCVA Congress will continue to deliver
‘Progress in Practice’ through bringing clinical
updates, scientific advances and expert knowledge”
Welcome to Leicestershire
Following a successful Congress held in Harrogate, this year BCVA moves to the Midlands.
Hinckley is very well-positioned in terms of access by road and rail and also proximity to
Birmingham and East Midlands Airports.
Declan O’Rourke
BCVA President
Hinckley Island Hotel has hosted the AHDA conference in the past and is well-versed in catering
for a congress of our size. As ever, and in the true spirit that defines BCVA Congress, there will
be plenty of opportunities for delegates, speakers and sponsors to relax and interact during the
social events taking place over the three days.
This year’s BCVA Congress will continue to deliver ‘Progress in Practice’ through bringing clinical
updates, scientific advances and expert knowledge.
We are delighted to welcome speakers of the very highest calibre in Ken Nordlund and
Pamela Ruegg from Wisconsin covering housing and ventilation, mastitis and responsible use
of medicines.
This year will see the introduction of a BCVA/Sheep Vet Society stream on Thursday.
Clinical Club, moderated by David Barrett (Bristol Vet School) and Alistair Smith (Waga Waga),
returns on Thursday evening so come armed with some clinical cases to discuss.
Again this year, as part of our strategy to support lifelong learning from the very start of cattle
veterinary careers, there will be a special rate for veterinary undergraduates and a dedicated
student stream with the introduction of ‘Moo-niversity Challenge’ on Saturday, which everyone is
invited to attend and support!
Andrew Taylor will be back again to chair an extended Question Time which is an opportunity to
raise contentious issues with a range of key figures in our industry.
We have worked to keep BCVA Congress registration below £400 this year. The President’s
dinner will be on Friday night and the social finale of Congress. The veterinary surgeon in
practice is our focus, with a programme for all ages and interests. We look forward to welcoming
you to Hinckley this year at the cattle congress of 2014.
Yours sincerely
Declan O’Rourke

Congress programme
General information
Colour-coded lectures
This year’s programme includes sessions dedicated to calf health,
dairy production, beef production and, new for this year are joint
sessions with the Sheep Veterinary Society. We have included
a diverse range of subject areas whilst maintaining the practical
relevance of talks. The programme will be colour-coded into
keynote speakers, cattle lectures, joint BCVA/SVS lectures and
workshops. In addition to this we have Question Time, our AGM
and short oral research presentations. A separate undergraduate
student stream will be run in parallel on Saturday. We hope this
will help you to plan your attendance at sessions effectively so
