Montclair High School Course Syllabus Department: World Languages Course: German IV Level: High Honors Credits: 5 Course Description: This course continues the study of the language and civilization of German-‐ speaking countries through an intense study of basic grammar, vocabulary, and conversational patterns. Innovative methods such as TPR (total physical response) are utilized when using songs and music to introduce new vocabulary or grammar. Fiction reading is represented in this course through the series Leichte Lektüren by Langenscheidt: Elvis in Köln, Tatort Frankfurt, Das Gold der Alten Dame. Class and home reading in this course is designed to incorporate grammar and vocabulary of the textbook into real life situations. The course utilizes folk and modern German music as an aid in pronunciation and vocabulary building. One of the songs is chosen to be presented at the traditional World Language Night in March. Units of Study: ● Hobbies and Interests ● Holidays ● Means of Communication ● How to Stay Healthy ● Driving and Cars ● Life of Young People in Germany and the US Proficiencies: At the end of the course students will be able to ● Continue to increase the ability to carry on a complex conversation. ● Continue to build skills toward the increased ability to report on a current event ● Demonstrate the ability to read with comprehension stories out of the textbook and short novels from the series Leichte Lektüren. ● Construct a correct series of sentences in answer to a question within the limits of learned structures. ● Write a guided composition using questions and/or outline based on familiar vocabulary and structures, including a book report. ● Respond appropriately to instructions and questions as spoken at normal conversational speed by the teacher and by native speakers on a CD or You Tube. ● Respond to classroom instructions, questions and statements in German. ● Continue to memorize German poetry and songs (folk and popular) ● Show the appreciation of the culture of German-‐speaking cultures though projects and other creative assignments. Evaluation & Assessment: · Homework: 15% of marking period grade. Home assignments tend to reinforce the skill acquired in class through formal exercises or creative writing. · Class Work: 15% of marking period grade. Class work includes workbook exercises, doing exercises on line, colloquiums. · Oral proficiency presentations, including poetry recitations – 10% of marking period grade. The course is speech and communication-‐oriented, therefore expressing one’s ideas aids in using German as a means of communication and is highly encouraged. · Quizzes (7-‐10 per marking period) – 25% of marking period grade. Quizzes target one specific skill, e.g. the vocabulary of the chapter, useful expressions, verb conjugation, etc. · Tests (1-‐2 per marking period) – 35% of marking period grade. After every chapter or unit there is a test checking students’ understanding of the core ideas. It may be traditional, or encourage a creative approach to the studied grammar and vocabulary. · Midterm Exam: 5% of final grade · Final Exam: 5% of final grade Midterm and final exams are designed to help students incorporate their knowledge into both a traditional test and a creative project. The guidelines for both are provided by the teacher. The Final Grade will consist of each marking period (22.5% each), the midterm exam (5%) and the final exam (5%).
