Saturday is the first meeting between NIU and Miami since the 2010
MAC Championship game in Detroit.
•
There are 16 players on both rosters, 14 from NIU and two from
Miami, that were on their respective team’s roster in 2010.

Since 2010 NIU is 8-2 in games following a loss. The Huskies
defeated Kent State after their loss to Arkansas earlier this season.

The Huskies’ 17-14 victory over Kent State was NIU’s first victory
when scoring 17 points or less since the Huskies beat Bowling Green,

GETTING EVEN: Miami owns an 8-7 lead in the series with NIU all-time, however,
the Huskies have won five of the last six games, including five straight regular season
contests. The lone RedHawk victory came in the 2010 MAC Championship game.
The series is tied 3-3 in games played at Huskie Stadium but NIU has won the last
two meetings in DeKalb, including a 17-13 win on Oct. 11, 2008.
WHEN LAST WE MET: Saturday’s game between NIU and Miami is a rematch of the
2010 MAC Championship game and marks the first game between the teams since
that contest, a 26-21 Miami victory. In that game, Miami rallied from a 21-20 deficit,
converting a fourth and 20 on its final drive, scoring a touchdown with 33 seconds
left in the game. (See full game recap on page 7.)
THEN THERE WERE TWO: There are 16 players on NIU and Miami’s rosters – 14 for
NIU and 2 for Miami – that were on the rosters for both squads in 2010. However
only two, the Huskies’ running back Akeem Daniels and defensive lineman Mwanza
Wamulumba of Miami, participated in the 2010 MAC Championship Game. Daniels
had one carry for no gain, while Wamulumba did not tally stats.
MAC CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH: All three of NIU’s MAC East foes in 2014 are
teams the Huskies have faced in the MAC Championship game. NIU faced this
week’s opponent, Miami, in the 2010 MAC Championship game, and defeated Ohio,
23-20, in the 2011 MAC title contest. The Huskies travel to Athens, Ohio Nov. 18 to
take on the Bobcats in their first meeting since that game. NIU already dispatched
their 2012 MAC Championship game adversary, Kent State, 17-14 earlier this year.
ON THE REBOUND: One reason for NIU’s continued success over the past five
seasons has been its ability to rebound following a loss. Since the start of the 2010
season, the Huskies are 8-2 in games following a loss, including a 4-1 mark since an
18-17 loss to Iowa at Soldier Field to open the 2012 season. NIU posted a 17-14 win
over Kent State on Oct. 4, 2014 following the Huskies’ loss to Arkansas earlier this
year. NIU has only lost back-to-back games twice since 2010, once during the 2011
season and at the end of 2013. You have to go all the way back to the end of the
2009 season to find the last time the Huskies lost three-straight games; NIU lost its
last three games of the season.

DO I KNOW YOU?: The Huskies and RedHawks recruit many of the same areas
in the offseason and this is reflected in their respective rosters. Both schools have
players from Aurora, Illinois, Charlotte, North Carolina, Powder Springs, Georgia
and West Palm Beach, Florida. The two schools even have players from across the
border as NIU’s Juwan Brescacin and Miami’s Mitchell Winter hail from Mississauga,
Ontario. Two high schools, Chicago’s Mt. Carmel and West Palm Beach’s W.T. Dwyer,
also are represented on both teams rosters.

HUSKIES IN THE MAC: NIU is 124-92-2 all-time in MAC games with an 88-47
(.652) record in league play since 1997. The Huskies have won 24 of 25 MAC regular
season contests and 32 of their last 33 since Oct. 1, 2011. NIU enters its 29th season
as a member of the Mid-American Conference in 2014-15; the 2014 season is NIU’s
18th in the MAC since rejoining the league in 1997.

MAC AT HOME: NIU has won 17 of its last 18 MAC games at Huskie Stadium over
the last four seasons, and is 70-39-1 (.647) all-time in home conference games.
Central Michigan is the only MAC team to win in DeKalb since 2008. The Chippewas
scored a 33-30 win in overtime on Nov. 12, 2008 and knocked off NIU 34-17 on Oct.
11, 2014. NIU has won 70.5 percent (48-20) of its league games in Huskie Stadium
since starting its second stint in the MAC in 1997.
NOT A COINCIDENCE: The NIU special teams, specifically the punt unit, have done
an exemplary job this season. The Huskies lead the MAC and are top 10 in the
country in net punting. Kicker/punter Tyler Wedel is averaging 43.1 yards a punt
and has pinned the opposition inside the 20-yard line 10 times. Concurrently, the
Huskies are also first in the MAC and third in the country in punt return defense as
NIU has allowed an average of .57 yards a return.
FIRST IN THIRD (DOWN EFFICIENCY): The NIU offense leads the league and is
fourth in the nation in third down efficiency. The Huskies have converted 55 of 105

NIU Head Coach Rod Carey
Over a four-month period in the fall of 2012, Rod Carey
went from coordinating the run game and coaching the
offensive line of the NIU Huskies, to offensive coordinator
of one of the most explosive offenses in the country, to
head coach of the first Mid-American Conference team to
play in a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) bowl game.
Carey’s promotion to head coach of Northern Illinois
University’s football team was announced on December
2, 2012, just minutes before NIU learned that the team
had earned a historic bid to face Florida State in the 2013
Discover Orange Bowl.
That hard work paid off in 2013 as Carey led NIU to an undefeated regular season
that included two wins over Big Ten Conference teams – a 30-27 last-minute win
over Iowa in the season opener and a 55-24 blowout victory at Purdue. Behind AllAmericans Jordan Lynch and Jimmie Ward, the Huskies spent 12 weeks in the Top
25 rankings and coasted through the league slate to win the MAC West title and
advance to the MAC Championship game for the fourth straight year.
Carey became the third NIU mentor to be named the MAC Coach of the Year,
following in the footsteps of greats Bill Mallory (1983) and Joe Novak (2002), and
was a semifinalist for the Maxwell Football Club Coach of the Year Award. He is the
first league coach to win two games over Big Ten Conference opponents in one
season.
Prolific offensive production, leading to four consecutive 11-plus win seasons,
has been a hallmark of Carey’s four seasons in DeKalb. In his first season at NIU, he
coached a pair of All-American offensive lineman as center Scott Wedige and left
tackle Trevor Olson were named All-Americans by CBSSports.com and Phil Steele’s
magazine, respectively. Tommylee Lewis joined Ward and Lynch, earning All-America
honors a year ago, while Lynch’s historic career was capped by a third-place finish
in the Heisman Trophy voting and a trip to New York for the Heisman festivities.
Carey joined the Huskies after three seasons coaching the offensive line at the
University of North Dakota. Five of Carey’s offensive linemen earned GWC allconference honors in his last three seasons at UND.
Prior to going to North Dakota, Carey spent the 2007 season as the offensive line
coach at Illinois State. His Redbird offensive line featured three players that received
professional football opportunities.
From 2000-06, Carey served on the coaching staff at the University of WisconsinStout, where he was the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. In all, Carey
coached 26 all-conference selections and seven All-Americans during his time at
UW-Stout.
Carey began his collegiate coaching career at the University of Minnesota (199899) where he helped the Gophers to their first bowl game in over a decade with a
trip to the 1999 Sun Bowl. Prior to UM, he spent four seasons in the high school
ranks at his alma mater, Wayzata (Minn.) High School, from 1994-97.
A three-year starter at center for Indiana during his collegiate playing days, Carey
served as a team captain and won IU’s Corby Davis Outstanding Offensive Player
Award as a senior. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Indiana in 1994.
Carey and his wife Tonya have two children, daughter Kennedi (10) and son
Charlie (7).

NCAA statistical categories NIU leads the MAC and is top 10 in the nation.
SUPERIOR PROTECTION: The Huskies lead the MAC and are seventh in the nation in
sacks allowed. The NIU offensive line, which features five players with 131 combined
starts, has allowed five sacks through six games this season. This is nothing new for
the Huskie front five. In 2013, NIU finished second in the conference and fifth in the
country in sacks allowed.
GIFT FOR SANTA: Michael Santacaterina intercepted the third pass of his career
on Saturday, picking off CMU quarterback Cooper Rush and returning it 35 yards
to set up a 24-yard Tyler Wedel field goal. It was Santacaterina’s first interception
since Oct. 6, 2012 at Ball State and the first turnover for the Huskie defense since the
fourth quarter of the Huskies’ win over UNLV.
MAKING THEM COUNT: Michael Santacaterina’s interception was the sixth
takeaway on the season for the Huskie defense, which has four interceptions and
two fumble recoveries in its first six games. NIU has converted those six turnovers
into 31 points with two touchdowns and a field goal off of its four interceptions.
Both fumble recoveries eventually resulted in touchdowns. The only time NIU did
not convert on a turnover was on Paris Logan’s interception at Northwestern on
Sept. 6.
STARTING ANEW: The Huskies will be looking to start a new home winning streak
when NIU faces off against Miami on Saturday. NIU saw its 28-game winning streak
at Huskie Stadium come to an end following a 34-17 setback to Central Michigan on
Oct. 11. The Huskies’ last home loss came on Sept. 26, 2009 at Idaho.
THE BEST: Since the start of the 2010
season, the Huskies are among the
nation’s winningest FBS teams. NIU is
50-11 (under three head coaches) over
the past five seasons and is behind
Alabama and Oregon for wins during
that stretch. The Crimson Tide has
posted a 51-8 mark since 2010, while

COMING INTO HIS OWN: A week after recording his second career 100-yard
receiving game in NIU’s win over Kent State, wide receiver Juwan Brescacin posted
the first multi-touchdown game of his career when he hauled in two TD receptions
in NIU’s 34-17 loss to Central Michigan. Brescacin scored his first touchdown of the
season on a 20-yard reception from Drew Hare in the first quarter. He also scored
the last TD of the contest when he and Hare connected on a 14-yard pass play with
2:43 left in the fourth quarter. The native of Mississauga, Ontario has eight career
touchdown receptions.
ATTEMPTING TO SURPASS CAREER BESTS: Quarterback Drew Hare attempted
a career-high 33 passes, completing 18, which is also a career best, for 231 yards
and two touchdowns against Central Michigan (Oct. 11, 2014). His previous career
high was 29 at Arkansas (Sept. 20) and he has completed 18 passes three times this
season, including at UNLV (Sept. 13) and against the Razorbacks.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Drew Hare threw his first interception of the season
and his career in NIU’s setback to Central Michigan on Oct. 11, 2014. Dating back to
last season, the sophomore had thrown 124 passes before being picked off at the
end of the third quarter. He threw 115 passes before the interception in 2014. Hare
is third in the league in passing efficiency with a 149.0 rating.

during that stretch is a Nov. 11 contest with Toledo at Huskie Stadium.
It’s the second straight season NIU will play four of its last five games
on the road.
SCORE ONE FOR THE DEFENSE: NIU has won 38 of its last 39 games
when allowing 24 points or less. The last time the Huskies held a team
under 24 points and lost was in the 2013 Poinsettia Bowl (Dec. 26) when
Utah State defeated NIU, 21-14. The Huskies are second in the league in
scoring defense in 2014, allowing 23.6 points a game.
UNDER 18 PERMITTED: NIU’s 17-14 win over Kent State was the first
win for the Huskies while scoring 17 or less points since Oct. 25, 2008,
when the Huskies defeated Bowling Green, 16-13. NIU has played 75
games since that time with 55 wins. In 2008, NIU won two games while
scoring 17 points or less, the Bowling Green contest and prior to that, a
17-13 win over Miami (Ohio), on Oct. 11.
WHAT’S THE RUSH: The NIU has held three opponents to under 100
yards total yards of rushing this season. The Huskies held Kent State
to just 83 yards on the ground on Oct. 4 and Presbyterian to 69 yards
rushing in the first week of the season. Northwestern rushed for 72 total
yards on Sept. 6 with all those yards coming in the first half.
IN A HUFF: Redshirt freshman Jordan Huff had a pair of career firsts
in NIU’s 17-14 victory last week. Huff returned his first career kickoff
66 yards, the longest kickoff return of the season for NIU, to set up a
Huskie field goal on the opening drive of the second half. On his only
carry from scrimmage, Huff ran 18 yards for his first career touchdown
to put NIU up 17-3.
RECEIVING ATTENTION: Wide receiver Juwan Brescacin posted the
second 100-yard receiving game of his career, catching three passes for
116 yards (38.7 yards per catch), in the Huskies’ victory over Kent State.
He recorded a career-high 121 receiving yards last year at Toledo (Nov.
20, 2013) on eight receptions. Brescacin was the second Huskie to tally
a 100-yard receiving game in 2014 as Da’Ron Brown accomplished the
feat twice this season.
STERLING SCHOLAR-ATHLETE: Huskie fullback Rob Sterling has
been named one of 167 semifinalists for the 2014 National Football
Foundation (NFF) Scholar-Athlete Awards, presented by Fidelity
Investments. With the nomination, Sterling is also a semifinalist for the
2014 William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes one individual (from
any level of college football) as the top scholar-athlete in the nation. The
Lansing, Illinois native carries a 3.63 grade point average while pursuing
his degree in accountancy.
ROAD WARRIORS: NIU’s 52-14 loss at Arkansas Sept. 20, 2014 snapped
the Huskies and the nation’s longest road winning streak. Since suffering
a 48-41 loss at Central Michigan on Oct. 1, 2011, the Huskies had won
17 straight games at an opponent’s stadium. During that stretch, NIU
knocked off such opponents as Iowa, Northwestern, Purdue and Army.
In 2013, NIU was the only FBS school to win all seven of its road games.
FILL THE BONEYARD: With its 23-15 victory over Big Ten Conference
foe Northwestern on Sept. 6, NIU will add another dog bone (stickers)
to the wall in its locker room. The Huskies have 14 wins over teams
from larger conferences. NIU’s first boneyard win came versus Kansas on
Sept. 3, 1983. (See chart on page 6 for complete listing.)
FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME: NIU sophomore wide receiver Aregeros
Turner put NIU on the board in its 52-14 setback at Arkansas with his
first career touchdown. The 5-11, 172-pound native of Copley, Ohio
reached the end zone on an 11-yard pass from quarterback Drew Hare
with 3:29 left in the first half. Turner has 10 receptions for 96 yards this
season and 18 receptions for 166 yards for his career.
PRIOR EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: NIU’s starting offensive linemen –
Tyler Loos, Tyler Pitt, Andrew Ness, Aidan Conlon and Ryan Brown – have
played in a combined 184 games and started a total of 131 contests
in their Huskie careers. Loos, Pitt and Brown are redshirt seniors, while
Ness and Conlon are redshirt juniors who have started every game at
guard and center, respectively, over the last two seasons.

HONORING BOB BRIGHAM: Northern Illinois University studentathletes from all 17 sports will honor the memory of iconic former
director of athletics Robert J. Brigham, who passed away last May at the
age of 90, by wearing “RJB” patches or stickers throughout the 201415 academic year. Northern Illinois University will honor the memory
of the late Dr. Robert J. Brigham, Sr., whose 50 years of service to the
university included 19 as the Huskies’ director of athletics and dated
back to his time as an NIU student-athlete, on Friday, October 10, 2014
at the Barsema Alumni & Visitors Center on the NIU campus.
JUST FOR KICKS: Kicker Tyler Wedel helped the Huskies flip the field
on Kent State in NIU’s win over the Golden Flashes. The senior from
McFarland, Wisconsin, who is averaging 43.1 yards on 25 punts this
season, averaged 43.2 yards on five punts and pinned Kent State inside
the 20 five times. In addition to his punting, Wedel was two-for-two on
extra points and one-for-two on field goals. He hit a 40-yarder in the
third quarter, which proved to be the margin of victory for NIU.
HIGH SCHOOL REUNION: Aurora Christian High School, a 3A school
in nearby Aurora, has sent four of its recent graduates to NIU, more
than any other school. Joel Bouagnon (TB) and Brandon Mayes (FS)
have seen action in all six games this season, while Chad Beebe (WR)
and Anthony Maddie (QB), have played in five games. Bouagnon is
second on the team in rushing with 263 yards and four touchdowns,
while Mayes has 14 tackles, 11 solo, and a forced fumble as the Huskies’
nickelback. Maddie has rushed for 136 yards and passed for 166 and
Beebe has eight receptions for 109 yards, including a season-long 32yard reception against Central Michigan, and four punt returns for 58
yards in five games.
SUNSHINE STATERS: The 2014 Huskie roster includes seven true
freshmen from Florida. Three wide receivers, three defensive backs and
linebacker Renard Cheren join four returning Florida Huskies – seniors
Jamaal Bass, Akeem Daniels and Tommylee Lewis and redshirt freshman
Bobby Jones IV. With memories of NIU’s Orange Bowl appearance still
fresh, the Huskies’ Sunshine State contingent nearly tripled. The group,

“Boneyard Victories” in the future as NIU Associate Vice
President/Athletic Director Sean T. Frazier announced nine
future home-and-home series in a week of announcements
dubbed “SchedulePalooza” this summer and again in the

IN A RUSH: NIU tailback Cameron Stingily posted his first 100-yard rushing
game of the season and fourth of his career when the Romeoville native rushed
for 102 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns in a 48-34 victory over UNLV.
It was his first 100-yard game since Nov. 20, 2013 when Stingily rushed for 146
yards in a victory over Toledo. It was also the first time this season and the third
time in his career Stingily has rushed for two touchdowns in a game. His last twotouchdown game came at Kent State Oct. 5, 2013.
PLAY IT AGAIN: The Huskies ran a school-record 109 offensive plays in its 55-3
season-opening victory over the Blue Hose. The Mid-American Conference record
for offensive plays run in a game is 114 by Toledo (Oct. 6, 1973). NIU ran the most
offensive plays in the FBS in its opener and was one of 10 teams to run more than
90 plays including USC (105), which broke the Pac-12 record, Texas A&M (99),
Hawai’i (97), Western Kentucky (96), Nevada (96), TCU (96), Arizona (94), North
Carolina (93) and Nebraska (91).
FIRST THINGS FIRST: The NIU defense tied the school record for first downs
allowed in a game when it held Presbyterian to just six first downs in the season
opener. The last time the Huskies held their opponents to six first downs was Oct.
19, 2002 in a 49-0 victory over Central Michigan. NIU also accomplished the feat
against Illinois St. (Oct. 16, 1976) and against Kent State (Oct. 28, 1972).
LOOK WHAT’S NEW: NIU will don new red and black home uniforms and white
road uniforms in 2014. In addition to the new threads, the Huskies will have their
choice between matte black or matte white helmets and different helmet decals
in 2014. Huskies players now have a variety of uniform combinations as they can
wear all one color (red, black and white) or a combination of the three (three
ways). The new jerseys have the letters “NIU” on the front, while the helmets use
the dog head logo or new “NIU’ markings. The seniors will choose the uniform
combination each week.
HUSKIES IN THE NFL
Former Huskie quarterback Chandler Harnish had a whirlwind week as Minnesota signed him to its practice squad on Monday (Sept. 29), put him on
their active roster as the back up quarterback for their Thursday night game,
then waived him Friday. On Monday (Oct. 6), he was resigned to the Vikings’
practice squad. The list of NIU’s former players currently in the NFL stands at
six (active and practice squad).

DETROIT – NIU had the school’s first MAC Championship since 1983 a fingertip away,
holding onto a 21-20 lead in the final two minutes of the 2010 Marathon MAC Championship game at Ford Field. All the Huskies had to do was stop Miami on fourth and 20
with 1:51 on the clock and the RedHawks on their own 38-yard line.
After a Miami timeout and facing a fourth and 20, RedHawk redshirt freshman Austin
Boucher lofted the football down the middle of the field, where three Huskie defenders
leapt to knock it down. Even after an NIU defender got his fingertips on the ball, it went
past the defense into the hands of Chris Givens for 31 yards and a Miami first down.
Two plays later, with just 33 seconds on the clock, Boucher caught the Huskies in a blitz
and hit Adrian Robinson for 33 yards and his only passing touchdown of the night, giving the RedHawks a 26-21 win.
Miami took an early 6-0 lead, driving 80 yards in eight plays on its first possession, with
Thomas Merriweather getting the drive started with a 47-yard pick-up and finishing it
with a one-yard touchdown run on fourth and goal. NIU’s Mike Krause blocked the PAT,
and until the final minute, that looked to be one of the biggest plays of the game.
NIU responded with the first of three long touchdown passes by Harnish. He hit Martel
Moore for a season-long 69 yards and Mike Cklamovski’s PAT put the Huskies ahead 7-6.
After Miami took the lead on a seven-yard touchdown run by Tracy Woods, Harnish and
Moore hooked up for a 27-yard touchdown and the Huskies led 14-13.
The RedHawks gained 106 yards on the ground in the first quarter, but finished the
game with only 99 rushing yards thanks to five sacks by NIU defenders, including two by
senior Jake Coffman.
Miami took the second half kickoff and went 10 plays in 82 yards. Merriweather scored
on a one-yard run for his second rushing touchdown to give the RedHawks a 20-14 lead.
NIU re-claimed the lead on the first play of the final period when Harnish hit Willie Clark
on a 39-yard pass to the end zone to finish a five-play, 89-yard drive. Cklamovski’s PAT
again put the Huskies ahead, 21-20.
Harnish tied his season high with 281 yards on 15-of-28 passing and three scores,
breaking George Bork’s 47-year-old record for single season total offense along the way.
Moore’s 110 receiving yards gave NIU its first 100-yard receiving day of the year and his
career best day.

Joel Bouagnon scored four touchdowns as NIU opened the season with a 55-3
victory over Presbyterian College on Thursday night at Huskie Stadium. NIU
racked up 635 yards of total offense, 424 coming on the ground, as it extended
its Huskie Stadium winning streak to a nation-leading 27 games.
NIU used a 23-point second half offensive outburst and an unrelenting defense
to defeat in-state foe Northwestern, 23-15, Saturday at Ryan Field in Evanston.
The Huskies won their third consecutive game over a Big Ten Conference opponent, and claimed their first win in eight tries over the Wildcats.
The Huskies ran a program-record 109 plays on offense, while the defense held
Presbyterian to just six first downs in the game to tie the school record for fewest
first downs allowed, last set in 2002.
NIU won its 25th consecutive regular season game and its 16th straight true road
game. The Huskies are 5-3 versus Big Ten teams since 2009.
Bouagnon gained 97 yards on 16 carries while Akeem Daniels rushed for 118
yards on 15 carries. Eleven different players carried the football for the Huskies.
NIU took the lead on a 58-yard, eight-play drive as quarterback Matt McIntosh
connected with wide receiver Da’Ron Brown for a 39-yard touchdown reception.
Brown led NIU with seven catches for 91 yards.
After a Presbyterian three-and-out, the Huskies added three points on a 32-yard
field goal by kicker Tyler Wedel. The Huskie defense forced another punt, and NIU
scored again as Bouagnon found the end zone from a yard out to increase the
NIU lead to 17-0 with 1:12 to play in the first quarter.
Presbyterian opened the second quarter with a punt and it took the Huskies
seven plays and 2:20 to go 69 yards for another score. Daniels picked up 29 yards
to put the Huskies in scoring position and two plays later, Bouagnon found a big
hole up the middle to score from 23 yards out.
Bouagnon scored a third touchdown on a nine-yard run to cap a 13-play, 73-yard
drive as NIU pushed its lead to 31-0 with 2:30 left in the first half. The Huskies
closed out the first half scoring when Wedel connected on a 26-yard field goal
with three seconds left, giving NIU a 34-0 lead at the break.
The Huskies added to their advantage on the opening possession of the second
half. Quarterback Drew Hare ran for 25 yards to get NIU across midfield; he then
connected with Juwan Brescacin on a 49-yard slant for a touchdown as the Huskies lead grew to 41-0.
An interception by freshman Albert Smalls gave the ball back to NIU at the PC
12. Three plays later, Bouagnon found the end zone for the fourth time, scoring
from a yard out.
Presbyterian got on the scoreboard with a 31-yard field goal by Brandon Morrow
at the end of the third quarter and neither team scored in the final period

Drew Hare, the third quarterback to play in the game for NIU, sparked the Huskies
to three second-half touchdowns. The sophomore from O’Fallon, Mo. completed
six-of-10 passes for 109 yards, including touchdown passes of 18 and 59 yards to
senior receiver Da’Ron Brown. Hare also scored on a four-yard run.
Brown finished the game with six catches for 128 yards while Akeem Daniels
rushed for 81 yards on 16 carries to power a Huskie rushing attack that totaled
221 yards on 55 carries by seven different players.
The teams played to a 0-0 halftime tie as defenses dominated early. NIU got a
spectacular interception in the end zone from junior cornerback Paris Logan to
thwart one Wildcat drive and forced five punts in the half.
Hare took over to start the third quarter and led NIU on a 10-play, 60-yard drive
to the Wildcat 15, where Tyler Wedel’s field goal attempt from 32 yards was good
for a 3-0 Huskie lead.
Northwestern responded with a four-play, 60-yard drive that ended with a 19yard touchdown pass from Trevor Siemian to Kyle Prater to give the Wildcats their
only lead of the game.
Then, the Huskie defense rose up. NIU recorded three of its five sacks in the second half and Northwestern finished the half with zero (0) net yards rushing on 12
carries for the half. The Wildcats were also penalized for holding several times.
Linebacker Rasheen Lemon and defensive end Jason Meehan each collected a
pair of sacks. NIU broke up six passes and forced three fumbles.
NIU took the lead for good with 52 seconds to play in the third quarter when
Hare hit Brown from 18 yards out to complete a 13-play, 82-yard drive. Two
possessions later, Hare connected with Brown on a 59-yard laser to the end zone
to give NIU a 16-7 lead (after the PAT was blocked).
The NIU defense forced a Northwestern three-and-out, and Chad Beebe’s 36yard punt return set up NIU on the NU 22. Four plays later, Hare ran it in from
four yards out and Wedel’s PAT made it 23-7 with 3:27 to play.
Northwestern got a late touchdown pass and two-point conversion but Brown
recovered the onside kick attempt and NIU ran out the clock for the win.

The Northern Illinois University Huskies fought off a furious third-quarter comeback by UNLV to claim a 48-34 victory over the Rebels and improve to 3-0 on the
2014 season Saturday night at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Razorbacks were too much for the Northern
Illinois University Huskies to handle as NIU fell to 3-1 on the season after dropping a 52-14 decision in Fayetteville.
After extending a 21-5 halftime lead to 28-5 on its first drive of the second half,
the Huskies saw UNLV come all the way back to tie the game, 34-34, with 9:18 to
play. But NIU’s playmakers answered the challenge over the final minutes to give
the Huskies the win.
Arkansas’ special teams and defense accounted for its first two touchdowns, and
while the Huskie defense played valiantly at times, holding the Razorbacks below
their per rush average, they could not hold up as UA effectively mixed the run
and the pass.
UNLV tied the game on a nine-yard pass from quarterback Blake Decker to
Shaquille Murray-Lawrence. One play earlier, Decker had hit Kendal Keys on a 41yard bomb to the nine. A two-point conversion pass to Devante Davis completed
the comeback.
NIU saw its nation-leading 17-game road winning streak come to an end and
dropped its first regular season contest in 27 games, since the 2012 season opener versus Iowa.
The Huskies were not done. After a pair of Keith Harris runs netted a first down,
Hare hit receiver Da’Ron Brown down the sidelines for a 54-yard touchdown. The
score put the Huskies back on top, 41-34, with 8:23 to play.
The Razorbacks’ Korliss Marshall returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a
touchdown. Later in the first quarter, NIU quarterback Drew Hare was sacked and
his fumble was picked up on the NIU 14 by UA’s Darius Philon and returned for
a touchdown.
Then it was the NIU defense’s turn. Decker led the Rebels on a drive to the NIU
seven. On first and goal, the UNLV QB looked for All-America candidate Davis in
the end zone. Davis, who caught six passes for 150 yards and two scores in the
game, was covered by junior Paris Logan, who tipped the ball into the arms of
NIU safety Marlon Moore.
NIU went three-and-out on its next drive and Arkansas drove 69 yards in 12 plays
to score its first offensive touchdown. Jonathan Williams broke four tackles to
score from 15 yards out and the Razorbacks took a 21-0 lead with 21 seconds to
play in the first quarter.
The Huskies got the ball with 5:22 to play and used the rushing of Cameron Stingily and Hare, and a big third-down completion to Aregeros Turner to drive down
the field. Stingily’s 22-yard run put NIU on the UNLV four-yard line with 2:18 to
play and he scored three plays later to give the Huskies a 48-34 lead.
Hare completed 18-of-28 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns, and added
74 rushing yards on 14 carries with a score. Stingily led the Huskies’ 331-yard
rushing attack with 102 yards on 17 carries and two scores. Brown recorded his
second consecutive 100-yard receiving game with six catches for 138 yards.
After NIU took a 28-5 lead on Hare’s 12-yard touchdown run on the first drive of
the second half, the third quarter belonged to UNLV. The Rebels outscored the
Huskies 21-3 the rest of the period as Decker hit Davis for TDs of 26 and 53 yards,
and Murray-Lawrence scored on a two-yard run, making the score 31-26, NIU.

After Arkansas missed a 43-yard field goal, NIU put together its best offensive
series of the game. Joel Bouagnon ran for 25 yards and Hare hit Aregeros Turner
three times on the drive, including on the 11-yard touchdown play.
Bouagnon led the Huskies in receiving with five catches for 71 yards and a touchdown on an 11-yard screen pass in the final quarter. Bouagnon also gained 45
yards on a screen in the first quarter for his career long play. Hare completed 18of-29 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns in the game.
The Razorbacks drove 71 yards in 10 plays and 2:40 to take a 28-7 halftime lead
with UA quarterback Brandon Allen finding Jared Cornelius in the end zone for
the 10-yard touchdown.
NIU struggled to put together anything offensively in the third quarter. and
despite playing tough run defense early, Arkansas took a 35-7 lead with 3:34 to
play in the period on a two-yard run by Allen.
Down 38-7 early in the fourth, NIU used 10 plays to go 75 yards, with Hare
hitting Bouagnon on the screen for the score. With 10:05 to play, NIU trailed
38-14 before Arkansas scored twice more to provide the final margin.

Kent State’s game-tying, 56-yard field goal effort with 2:15 to play came up short,
giving NIU a 17-14 victory over the Golden Flashes in its MAC opener.
Behind Thomas Rawls’ 270 rushing yards and two touchdowns, Central Michigan
knocked off NIU, 34-17, in a Mid-American Conference West Division matchup at Huskie Stadium. The loss snapped the Huskies’ 28-game home stadium
winning streak and ended NIU’s 24-game regular season winning streak against
MAC opponents.
With the Huskie offense unable to find a consistent rhythm, the NIU defense
stepped up. Kent State managed just a pair of field goals through the first 53
minutes before scoring its lone touchdown of the game with 7:15 to play. The
two-point conversion pulled the Golden Flashes within three, 17-14.
After NIU quarterback Anthony Maddie was intercepted to give Kent State the
ball back at its own 39 with 6:01 on the clock, the Golden Flashes marched to the
NIU 34. QB Colin Reardon gained eight yards on fourth-and-one, but was injured
on the play. On the next play, Perez Ford and Rasheen Lemon sacked KSU backup Nathan Strock for a five-yard loss. After two incomplete passes, Kent State
attempted the long field goal, and the Huskies ran out the clock.
NIU held Kent State to 83 yards rushing and KSU converted just three of 16 first
downs in the game. Huskie defenders combined for eight tackles for loss, and
recorded a sack and two hurries on KSU’s final drive.
Following a scoreless first quarter, Maddie came in at quarterback and marched
the Huskies 80 yards in nine plays. He connected with receiver Da’Ron Brown for
37 yards on a third down play before Brown found the end zone on the jet sweep
to give the Huskies a 7-0 lead.
Kent State answered with a field goal to cut the Huskie advantage to 7-3. The
Golden Flashes advanced to the NIU one-yard line before linebacker Jamaal Bass
stuffed KSU running back Nick Holley for no gain on third-and-goal.
Jordan Huff took the opening kickoff of the second half 66 yards to the Kent State
30, setting up a 40-yard field goal for Tyler Wedel as the Huskies took a 10-3 lead.
A three-and-out gave the ball back to NIU and the Huskies needed just five plays
and 1:37 to find the end zone. Maddie connected with junior Juwan Brescacin
for 49 yards to the Kent State 27. Three plays later, Huff ran 18 yards for his first
career score as NIU pushed its lead to 17-3.
Brescacin finished with a game-high 116 yards receiving on three catches.
The Huskies and Golden Flashes traded punts before Kent State added a field
goal to cut the NIU lead to 17-6 with 1:53 to play in the third quarter. The Golden
Flashes reached the NIU 10-yard line but three-straight incomplete passes forced
Kent State to settle for a field goal with 1:53 to play in the third quarter.
Kent State scored its first touchdown with 7:15 to play in the game. A 20-yard
carry by James Brooks, followed by a 30-yard pass from Reardon to Kris White,
helped move the Golden Flashes into Huskie territory. Four plays later Reardon
scored from two yards out, and then connected with Casey Pierce on the twopoint conversion as the Golden Flashes trimmed the Huskie lead to 17-14.

The Huskies opened the game with a five-play, 71-yard drive that culminated
with a 20-yard strike from quarterback Drew Hare to junior receiver Juwan Brescacin. CMU countered with a 10-play, 86-yard response that ended with Rawls
finding the endzone from five yards out to knot the game at 7-7.
After an NIU punt, the Chippewas moved out of the shadow of their own endzone courtesy of a 39-yard pass from quarterback Cooper Rush to Jesse Kroll. An
18-yard completion put the CMU offense at the NIU 13, where Rawls rumbled for
a 13-yard touchdown to give the visitors a 14-7 lead.
The teams traded punts before the CMU offense again found its rhythm and
drove to the NIU 16. Following a five-yard gain by Rawls, Rush found Jesse Kroll
on a six-yard touchdown to put the Huskies in a 14-point hole entering the half.
Rawls jumpstarted the Chippewa offense out of the intermission with a 22-yard
run. Two long completions from Rush to Titus Davis put CMU at the NIU 15. On
third-and-three at the NIU 8, Logan came through with a breakup, forcing CMU
to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Brian Eavey and a 24-7 lead.
NIU’s hurry-up attack on the ensuing drive seemed to get the Huskie offense in
gear, before Cameron Stingily was stopped on fourth-and three from the CMU 49
and the Chippewas took over.
Three plays later, NIU’s Michael Santacaterina stepped in front of a Rush pass and
raced down the sidelines before getting pushed out at the CMU 25, setting up a
24-yard chip shot field goal by Tyler Wedel.
CMU came back with an eight-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 13-yard pass from
Rush to Ben McCord that put CMU up by 21 with 3:20 to play in the the third
quarter. Rawls accounted for 49 yards on the drive.
Hare lofted a pass deep downfield to Da’Ron Brown, who came down with a 49yard catch to move NIU into CMU territory. Two plays later, Hare hit Brescacin
ifrom 14 yards out, getting NIU within 31-17.
From there, Rawls and the Chippewas’ rushing attack took over, grinding the
clock down and adding a 23-yard field goal from Eavey to complete the scoring.
NIU finished with just 110 yards rushing on 33 carries.
