Who Are We?
We are Hair's Kay Academy of Cosmetology, Inc. the only African American Female
501(c)3 beauty Academy in New Haven, CT. Founded by Karaine Holness in 2010
What We Do?
Our mission is to assist young people, single-mothers, and fathers of our community get the
tools they need to become self reliant, secure and strong contributors to society. After
completing 1500 hrs of cosmetology theory/practice and passing the State Board Exam they
will be able to work anywhere in the beauty field such as salon, spa, barbershop, cruise ship
industry, print, stage or movies and in retail.
How We Do It
Funding is provided from various sources i.e., Faith-Based Initiative organizations,
Businesses, Families and Friends.
This 1-year program can be completed in 9 months (for those who choose to). Students
attend instruction classes five (5) days a week for an average of 37 hours.
Our classroom sizes range from 3 to 10 students with a teacher. We will also bring in
members of the community to share their work experiences. We will also be attending 4
conferences - PBA in Las Vegas, Serious Business in New Orleans, Bonner Brothers in
Atlanta and IBS in New York

Cosmetology provides entrepreneur and employment opportunities for people of all ages. It
enables people to acquire skills that will accelerate their lively hood. It’s an awesome
opportunity to develop independence in finding means of employment in this very lucrative
industry.

Dear Scholarship Applicant:
Congratulations on taking your first step in becoming a professional in the beauty/barber
industry. At Hair’s Kay Academy of Cosmetology, Inc. we strive to prepare all students for a
satisfying career in an industry whose annual profits are in the BILLIONS! Excellent
students become successful graduates – lifetime ambassadors of our school! Our Scholarship
Program is expressly designed to encourage such potential winners to enter the profession as
living proof of the substantial advantages of the Hair’s Kay Academy of Cosmetology family.
We are serious about this commitment to encourage the very best students to train with us.
This year, for example, we have budgeted over $10,000 to be awarded to deserving high
school graduates! You could be one of them – if you apply!
An outgoing personality and the ability to get along with others are major qualifications for
success in our industry. The Scholarship Committee gives much consideration to these
attributes, and it is one of the reasons we require a personal interview of all Scholarship
Candidates. In addition, school records are evaluated with emphasis on good attendance,
Guidance Counselor recommendations, school and outside activities and grades.
While it is not necessary to have top class standing, we are looking for evidence of interest,
enthusiasm and effort – necessary for success in almost any endeavor. It is important that you
apply as soon as possible. Candidates are evaluated (and Scholarships awarded) on an
individual basis as applications are received. Do not delay! Please note that scholarships are
only available during your senior year of high school. Please see the attached scholarship
requirements for more details. If you are a high school senior, apply now as follows:
1. Fill out the "Scholarship Application." When you have completed the Scholarship
Application, simply send it to Hair’s Kay Academy of Cosmetology Inc. 143 Fitch
St, New Haven CT 06515
2. A copy of the "Request for School Information" should be submitted to your high
school Guidance Counselor. Print your name at the top of the form and also sign
your name at the bottom. Ask your Guidance Counselor to complete this form as
soon as possible and return it to: Hair's Kay Academy of Cosmetology Inc. 143 Fitch
Street, New Haven, Connecticut 06515. If your Guidance Counselor prefers to fax
this form, he or she may do so at: 203-389-7292.
3. Teacher recommendations. Teacher recommendations are not required, but are
certainly encouraged. If any of your teachers would like submit a recommendation
on your behalf, please ask them to mail it to our office or submit it to your Guidance
Counselor to return to us along with the Request for School Information.

4. Attend a scholarship interview. Once we have received your application, we will
contact you to schedule an appointment for your interview with us. Please invite
your parents to attend. Your personal scholarship interview is a very important
element of the evaluation process.
5. Receive your award notification. Within six weeks of completion of your personal
interview and receipt of the above-mentioned documents, we will send you a
scholarship award notification to your home address.

To qualify as a successful candidate for one of our scholarship awards, the candidate must
meet the following requirements:

Passionate: a successful candidate must have a passion for cosmetology
A member of our community: a successful candidate must be a graduate of a local
New Haven/Hamden based high school, career center or vocational school
Academically committed: a successful candidate must be a graduating member of
the class of 2013 and maintained a C average or better. Additionally, successful
candidates must be at least 17 years of age (18 at the time of program completion).
Additionally, candidates should be able to demonstrate financial need
