Cosmetology Check List
 1. Application to Vernon College (complete & submit to admissions).
 2. Residency Documentation (see application)
 3. All applicants will be required to take the Cosmetology Accuplacer Exam including
reading (minimum score 50)
math (minimum score 30)
sentence skills (minimum score 50)
 If you have taken another entrance exam and have met the TSI (Texas Success
Initiative) requirements on that test, you will not have to take the Cosmetology
Accuplacer Exam. If exam scores are over 4 years old the Accuplacer exam must be
taken. Cost for the test is $29.00.
(Call the testing Center, Ex. 2317 or 3278, to schedule a test date.)
 4. Submit transcripts. (High school and/or college) to admissions
 5. File an application for financial aid (if needed).
 6. Fill out application to the New Beginnings Program if applicable
 7. Provide proof of Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination.
 8. Fill out application to Cosmetology and return to cosmetology lab assistant.
 9. Attend “New Student Group Advising” (all new students must attend).
 10. After receiving scores from Accuplacer Exam, call the Cosmetology Dept. to set up
an interview with the instructor. (you must bring your test scores with you)
 11. Acceptance letters will be mailed out prior to Sept 1, 2014
 12. Register and Pay tuition and fees by the deadline. (Posted in Registration & Advising

Cosmetology Department
Operator General Information
All applicants will be required to take the Cosmetology Accuplacer Exam including:

The Fundamentals of Cosmetology and the Haircutting course are the first courses to enroll in.
Students transferring hours must consult with the Director prior to enrollment!
LENGTH OF PROGRAM
4 Semesters Approximately 1 year and 8 weeks
CLASS SCHEDULE: (Summer semester will not meet on Friday)

The college schedule includes breaks between semesters and holidays.
UNIFORM: (no exceptions)
Black uniform pants (from the bookstore)
BLACK uniform t-shirt (from the bookstore)
UNIFORM lab coat (from the bookstore)
Solid black shoes (enclosed toe shoes)
(uniforms will be ordered on the day of orientation and must be paid for on that day.)
GOOD GROOMING!!!!! Hair styled and make-up applied
JUNIOR SCHEDULE:
Basic cosmetology procedures; successful completion of competency examination
ATTENDANCE:
When absences exceed 39 hours per semester the student will be administratively withdrawn from the program.
GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
70 to pass
80 to maintain financial aid for the following semester
ACTIVITIES:
The college provides all cosmetic supplies:
Various hands on projects
Hair shaping
Hair color & highlighting projects
Guest speakers and demonstrators
Up to date video library
ANTICIPATED EARNINGS:
This can only be determined by each individual’s motivation. Society is increasingly aware of the importance of
appearance for success. As in all professions, the more you know the more you can earn.

The industry is growing at an average rate.

In some cases, students with felony convictions will not be issued a license.

ORIENTATION
Orientation for new students is mandatory.
During orientation you will need to bring your Social Security Card, and Driver’s License,
(We have to copy each and place in your file)
You will need a $25.oo credit card (no checks) for enrolling with The Texas Department
of Licensing & Regulation. Note: If you don’t have a personal credit card, a $25.00 credit
card can be purchased at Walmart.
You will also need about $100.00 to pay for your uniform. Uniforms will be available to
try on for proper size. You will order uniforms on orientation day and they must be paid
for on orientation day. If you have financial aid, there may be enough money left after
tuition to pay for your uniform.
Also before the first day of school , you will need to purchase your kit from the bookstore.
