MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The Color Me Safe 5K was held on Minot Air Force Base, N.D., Oct. 3, 2014. The
Family Advocacy Clinic partnered with the McAdoo Fitness Center to host the 5K to raise awareness for domestic
violence. As participants ran the route, they were doused by different colored powders from volunteers.

MINOT AIR FORCE
BASE, N.D. -- The day begins
at 4:45 a.m. as security forces
Airmen report to the armory
to check out their weaponry
and then continue to the
dispatch office. This is where
they receive their paperwork
and any other additional
equipment before leaving for
the missile complex.
The
dispatch
office
supplies the team with a "trip
box," which contains missionessential equipment such as a
booklet with guidelines for the
field, checklists, binoculars,
night vision goggles with
magnifiers, a range finder and
a personal alarm system that
serves as a way to indicate
to maintenance teams below
ground that something is
happening top-side.
"The security forces team
leader will familiarize their
team with the equipment
supplied in their trip box
and also brief them on the
expectations for their mission
that day," said Senior Airman
Samuel Tankersley, 791st
Missile
Security
Forces
Squadron dispatcher.
Year round, dispatchers are
on call 24/7 to ensure security
forces teams in the field have
access to any equipment that
they may need. In order to
maintain mission readiness,
each day dispatchers assemble
approximately 15-20 trip
boxes.
"It's the dispatcher's duty to
make sure that security forces
has everything they need to
do their job," said Senior
Airman Colton Peterson,
791st MSFS dispatcher. "We
also act as a liaison between
security forces and missile
maintenance."
At any time a security
forces Airman may need to
leave for the missile complex
to respond to alarms. The
dispatch office creates the
necessary paperwork to log
their departure and keeps
track of their location while
they are gone.
"We are responsible for
knowing what the trip is for,
who is on it and where it is
going to take place," said
Tankersley. "We maintain
constant contact with flight
security controllers to keep
track of movements at all
times."
When security forces
members arrive back to the
dispatch office, they unload
and turn in their equipment.
Aside from ensuring that it
is in good working condition
when it's returned from the
field, dispatchers also verify
that the serial numbers match
and the trip boxes are fully
equipped for the next shift.
Airman 1st Class David Svendsen,
791st Missile Security Forces dispatcher, answers the phone on Minot Air Force Base, N.D., Sept. 29,
2014. Throughout the day, dispatchers are responsible for creating the
necessary paperwork to log security forces members’ departure and
keep track of their location while
they are in the field.

-- Winter presents unique
challenges for Minot Airmen
when it comes to completing
the strategic deterrence
mission in austere weather
conditions. The extremely
cold environment has led
to numerous Airmen being
injured, in some cases
fatally.
For this reason, the wing
is holding a mandatory safety
day Friday during which all
Team Minot members are
required to attend one of
three briefings at the base
theater: 9 a.m., 11 a.m. or
1 p.m. Please arrive early
enough to be seated before
the briefing begins, and fill
seats from front to back.
Those whose missions
prevent them from physically
attending at the base theater
must attend a briefing
virtually at https://connect.
dco.dod.mil/livestream.
Air Force leaders take
a proactive approach each
winter season to protect
Airmen and their families.
Accidents are going to
happen, but a majority
of mishaps are avoidable
by simply having a plan
and the right information.
Therefore, Friday’s briefing
topics will include winter
safety, risk management /
complacency, and the FY14
mishap recap.
While it is true “Only
the BEST come North”,
unfortunately even the best
can become a statistic in a
safety mishap. Don’t be
another statistic!

-Assignment incentive pay
and special duty assignment
pay for select total force
nuclear career fields became
effective Oct. 1, following
Secretary of the Air Force
Deborah Lee James' recent
announcement.
"The purpose of these
special pays is to incentivize
Airmen to volunteer for and
perform duties in a particular
career field, location and/or
special assignment where
the scope of responsibility
and required skills exceed
those of other Airmen in
the same career field and
rank," said Brig. Gen. Brian
Kelly, director of force
management policy.
Select
officers
and
enlisted members serving in
eleven nuclear career fields
and assignment areas will
receive between $75 and
$300 per month. Nuclear
careers fields selected for
these special pays include
enlisted service members
assigned
to
command
post,
nuclear
aircraft
maintenance,
security
forces, missile maintenance,
aircraft armament systems,
nuclear weapons and support
personnel who deploy to the
ICBM complex.
Missile
launch, security forces and
missile maintenance officers
will be eligible to receive
special pays as well.
"The Airmen selected for
this incentive are critical
members of our Air Force's
number one mission," said
Col. Zannis Pappas, nuclear
and
missile
operations
career field manager. "Our
members take extreme
pride in accomplishing their
duties, ensuring that our
nuclear arsenal remains safe,
secure and effective."
While
the
effective
date is Oct. 1, it will take
several months for Airmen
working within the selected
nuclear careers fields
to receive their pay
adjustments. However,
eligible
Airmen
will be retroactively
compensated to the
Oct. 1 effective date. In
the meantime, officers
and enlisted members
meeting the criteria
for these special pays
should work through
their chain of command
and military personnel
sections for questions
on their individual
eligibility.

AFGSC on path to modernize
ICBM sustainment
KATE BLAIS | AIR FORCE GLOBAL STRIKE COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS
ARKSDALE
AIR
B
FORCE BASE, La. -In an ongoing effort to better
manage the sustainment of
intercontinental
ballistic
missiles, Air Force Global
Strike
Command
has
implemented an ICBM
Parts Centralized Funding
Program designed to help
alleviate budgetary pressure
on missile wing leadership.
Leaders in the ICBM
community have applauded
this effort as one of the most
important improvements to
ICBM sustainment activities
since ICBMs went on alert in
1960.
The centralized funding
program is AFGSC's first
attempt to bring funding used
for purchasing missile system
parts, which previously
resided at the wing, up to the
major command level. As of
Oct. 1, the beginning of the
2015 fiscal year, AFGSC
is responsible for day-today funding of the weapon
system's parts costs.
"What happened before
was that wings had to choose
between whether or not to
buy a missile part or buy
something to support their
people," Daryle Fry, AFGSC
ICBM program analyst said.
"That is a choice a wing
commander shouldn't have to
make."
Any item that an ICBM
technical order covers is
considered part of the weapon
system and will be centrally
funded. Basically, anything
used in direct support of the
weapons system is covered,
Fry said.
"As of Oct. 1, a technician
can go into supply and ask
to order a part without being
concerned about funding,"
Fry explained. "The wing
orders the parts they need,
and the bill gets sent to
AFGSC. Wing commanders
can focus more on their
people and support structure
and 20th Air Force won't have
to worry about advocating to
command to find funding for
parts."
The shift in funding
responsibility
not
only
decreases the sustainment
burden that once resided
at the wing level, but will
allow AFGSC to determine
the weapon system's true
requirements.
"Before I couldn't tell you
what the true requirement
was, because in the old days
the requirements were based
off of funding availability and
parts orders were deferred
sometimes to pay for other
priorities," Fry said. "Now
unit funding availability is
not really a factor anymore;
requirements will be driven
by a true weapon system
need."
Fry expects the centralized
funding to remain at AFGSC
for about a year while the
command determines the
requirements. After, funding
will be elevated up to
Headquarters Air Force and
ICBMs will be funded like
the service's other weapon
systems.
"The entire Air Force is
aging, but while the rest of
the Air Force moved on with
sustainment, ICBMs did not,
but we're changing that now,"
said Lawrence Kingsley,
Logistics, Installations and
Mission Support director at
AFGSC. "My priority is to
modernize how the ICBMs
are maintained and sustained.
This centralized funding
program is part of that effort,
and will allow AFGSC to
become proactive as opposed
to reactive in our approach to
managing the ICBM force."
This program will not only
help AFGSC determine the
true requirements, but Fry
anticipates that it will fix a
lot of second and third order
effects that cause improper
weapons sustainment, he
said.
"It fixes supply issues that
aren't addressed until the last
minute," he continued. "It
allows us to do programming
and budgeting because we'll
have accurate information on
what our true requirement is.
We'll have forward thinking
plans and better life cycle
management."
In the long run, this
program will start to
reverse the effects of failing
equipment, which will in turn
reduce man hours, increase
weapon system reliability
and improve the overall
performance of the weapon.
The effort began in 2009
when AFGSC became the Air
Force's newest MAJCOM
and merged the ICBM
and bomber communities.
Combining the two legs of
the nuclear triad allowed for
cross-flow of information
and ways of doing business.
"I believe we've moved
off the island and moved
onto a continent," Fry said.
"That has broadened our
perspectives and horizons to
see that there's other ways of
doing things more efficiently.
There's better ways to do
things and make Airmen's
life easier in the field."
Better ways of doing
things locally have impacts
globally.
"ICBMs are on alert
underground 24/7, 365, and
have been for more than
50 years," Kingsley said.
"ICBMs are the cheapest
insurance policy this nation
has and the ultimate defense
against strategic attack. For
that reason it is imperative
that we work to maintain and
sustain these weapons in the
most effective and efficient
way possible."

Norsk Hostfest hosts Military
Appreciation Day
AIRMAN 1ST CLASS LAUREN PITTS | MINOT AIR FORCE BASE PUBLIC AFFAIRS
M
INOT, N.D.
-- A tribute
to the rich
Scandinavian
heritage found in North
Dakota, the 37th annual
Norsk Hostfest was hosted
at the North Dakota State
Fairgrounds in Minot, Oct.
1-4, 2014.
Founded in 1978, Norsk
Hostfest is the largest
Scandinavian festival in
North America. The event
celebrates cultures from
Norway, Denmark, Sweden,
Finland and Iceland.
For military members and
their families, a highlight
of the festival was Military
Appreciation Day. Active
duty military members and
their families received free
admission to the festival
and were offered discounted
tickets to main events
throughout the day.
"I get the distinguished
honor to thank you for
thanking us," said 5th Bomb
Wing commander Col. Jason
Armagost in his speech at
the festival.
Armagost was followed by
David Reitten, son of Norsk
Hostfest's founder, who also
voiced his appreciation for
the service members from
Minot Air Force Base.
"Tonight we honor and
thank our active and former
military members," Reiten
said. "It's our way of saying
thank you for your service to
our country."
Cindy Whitesell, 5th
BW community support
coordinator and Minot
native, has been attending
Norsk Hostfest for years.
With Norwegian heritage
in her own family, she
explained how big of an
impact the military presence
has on the community.
"There is so much
diversity in the Air Force,
and it's really important that
the community be able to
share our heritage with the
military," Whitesell said.
Through the halls of
the venue, venders and
food stands lined the
corridors, selling traditional
Scandinavian cuisine and
crafts.
Bread
pudding,
lutefisk and deep-fried
meatballs, as well as handcarved Christmas ornaments
were all featured items
during the festival.
Much like the relationship
between the base and
community,
the
Norsk
Hostfest will continue to
bring cultures together in a
celebration for generations to
come, Armagost explained.
"What we have in
northern North Dakota, to
come together like this,
can only be found here,"
Armagost said. "None of this
can happen without a sense
of service and community."

If ever there was a year to
be described as close to ideal as possible for pheasant
production, this might be it.
Admittedly, it was a bit
cool this spring and summer.
But it wasn’t as cold, wet,
and windy as it has been in
some recent years and it’s
those conditions that put a
damper on upland game
bird nesting and brood success.
Instead, the combination
of enough remaining habitat
across the landscape, timely
rains, and sunshine worked
together to create grand
growing conditions. Mother
Nature cooperated and created prime growing weather
for producing insects - the
key food source for young
pheasant and grouse chicks,
along with luscious green
grass and forbs for adults
and chicks as they grew
older. “There are fantastic
habitat conditions out on the
landscape this year,” N.D.
Game and Fish Department
upland game management
supervisor Stan Kohn described.
Sweet clover flourished in
2014: Rather than being just
another short plant blowing
in the breeze, it stretched 5
to 6 feet high to sky. It provides excellent escape cover
for chicks and adult birds.
Insects love its flowers, and
its leaves are delicious if
you’re an upland game bird.
Kohn tallied up results
from the Game and Fish Department’s summer roadside
pheasant surveys, which help
gauge brood survival, and
while there might be some
pockets of the state where
birds won’t be as abundant
as hunters might like, “our
numbers are looking good
in just about all areas of the
state,” Kohn offered.
Overall pheasant numbers increased in all four of
the pheasant management
districts and are similar to
what was observed in 2010.
“There aren’t record-breaking numbers like in 2007 –
2008 but it will be another
good year,” Kohn added.
A look at the hard survey
numbers show total pheasants observed were up 30
percent statewide. Brood
observations were up 37
percent, although brood size
was down 4 percent.
Good habitat conditions spell more than good
news for nesting and brood
success. Good late season habitat conditions also
translate into improved
chances for winter survival.
Some timely October rains
would be beneficial, Kohn
said, but overall the habitat
for pheasants is in nice late
summer and early fall condition in many areas of North
Dakota.
The irony of the current
good habitat conditions is
that it while it’s good news
in the short-term for this
year’s pheasant hunting season outlook, it diminishes
the reality of what is really
happening out across many
parts of the North Dakota
landscape: The simple fact
that the overall number of
acres of available wildlife
habitat continues to decline.
At some time when the
quality of habitat declines,
Kohn anticipates wildlife
populations will reflect the
situation and “we’ll go back
to poor numbers.”
However, we humans
tend to live in the here and
now and yesterday is ancient
history.
So for now, the 2014
pheasant hunting season
outlook generally looks
bright in terms of bird numbers and habitat conditions.
Hunters will likely be working
through hordes of thick, tangled sweet clover and they
may want to cuss it out for
all of the extra hard work it
causes.
But, really, they probably
should be thankful instead
because it’s the clover and
all of that other good, heavy
cover that helped those
chicks grow up to be roosters for hunting and hens for
future hunting opportunities.
That, and Mother Nature.

Wild Hands: a toe tapping band who are

TONYA STUART-MELLAND | NORTHERN SENTRY

Wild

something
or other band from Minot,
North Dakota.
This year’s new act at
the Norsk Høstfest was
a local band, with lots of
North Dakota pride. Those
who happened to stumble
upon them in the Skien
Mezzanine were in for a
real treat. Their toe tapping
tunes about Colorado, old
shoes, boomerangs, dirty
kids and more created a
fun atmosphere at this
year’s fest.
Wild Hands is made
up of four local boys
Max Patzner, Eli
Kjelson, Nick
Holwegner
and
Joe
Andrus. Max
is their song
writer, vocalist
and
guitar
player
extraordinaire.
He also doubles
as
the
band’s
in house artist,
creating
funny
little illustrations,
giving their fans a
visual description
of who they all are.
Eli
showcases
his skills as a
vocalist and
guitar player.
He likes to
think of himself
as the bands

officer
and
believes
that
Hello in Swedish is hey
and goodbye is hey doe.
Nick keeps the beat as their
percussionist. He is the
band’s go to driver, amazing
van packer and helps the
band keep on topic. Lastly
Joe their upright bassist
and banjo harmony master.
He is the band’s comedian,
making everyone laugh. “He
is the heart of the band and
puts the wild in Wild Hands”
explains Max.
Eli and Max came up
with the idea for Wild Hands
on a road trip to a Bob
Dylan concert. Their main
goal was to have an outlet
for travel and to see the
world. So far they have only
traveled within the United
States, but are looking at
going to Europe in the near
future. All the boys had
previously been in other
local bands. Eli & Nick
were in Crooked Gospel
of Western Civilization,
Joe was in Roughriders

and Max was in Diabolic
Octopus, Atom’s Rite and
Morning Red. They had
been watching each other’s
bands for as long as they
could remember; so when
Eli & Max came up with the
idea for Wild Hands, they
knew exactly who they were
going to ask to help make
their idea a reality.
The
boys
have
just released their debut
album, entitled Oh, River,
which would not have
been possible without the
help from all of their fans.
They started a Kickstarter
account with a goal of
$7,000 to help them with
recording, printing, pressing
albums, travel and any other
expenses that ensue when
making an album. With all
the support of their friends
and family the band raised
$9,639, surpassing their
goal which is absolutely
fantastic. Everyone who
sponsored them were not
forgotten, depending upon
how much each person who
funded them gave, they
received either a record or
CD, t-shirt, magnet, limited
edition screen printed poster,
a hand done drawing of Wild
Hands from Max, a special
thank you in the liner notes,
and a private house show.
They also could not have
done it without their good
friend Jason Brown who was
their recording engineer;
Delicious Design League,
who designed and printed
their album cover; James
Flames, who designed their
limited edition poster; and
MSU NOTSTOCK, who
hosted their album release
concert.
Their album Oh, River,
has a very eminent
reoccurring theme
throughout their
song lyrics, North
Dakota. They are
proud to call this
beautiful
state
home, especially
the city of Minot.
They not only
were inspired by
their North Dakota
home,
but
also
different
musical
genres; specifically
the Beatles, Elvis,
punk rock, the Minot
Music Scene, their
fans and Takuma
Abe. Wild Hands
foresee more records
in the future,
tours, shows
and aspire
to travel

to meet
new
people.
They
even
joked
about
having

NORTHERN SENTRY
Top tier of enlisted supervision
SENIOR AIRMAN STEPHANIE MORRIS | MINOT AIR FORCE BASE PUBLIC AFFAIRS
M
INOT
AIR
FORCE BASE,
N.D. -- This is
the final installment of a three
part series describing the
roles and views of different
supervisors in each tier of Air
Force enlisted leadership.
Master Sgt. Kelly Barrett,
5th Bomb Wing NCO in
charge of command and
control operations, has been
in the Air Force for more than
18 years, many of which he
has spent as a supervisor at
various command posts.
"I was 20 years old when
I joined," said the Kansas
native. "I was living in Wichita
at the time, working for a
handful of sales companies. I
realized that I needed to make
a career-type move."
In 1996, Barrett started
his career in the Air Force
working at the 623rd Air
Mobility Squadron command
post on Ramstein Air Base,
Germany. By the time he
reached the rank of senior
Airman, he had already had
his first taste of supervising.
While stationed at Langley
Air Force Base, Virginia, he
began leading and teaching
his peers, many of who shared
the same dormitory building
with him.
"I learned to separate work
from personal time," Barrett
explained. "I also found ways
to let people know why I was
making that distinction."
Barrett attained the rank
of staff sergeant in 2000
while he was stationed in the
Netherlands. While there, he
supervised two Airmen and
worked alongside a captain,
a technical sergeant and a
master sergeant at a munitions
site.
He started learning a
new job at the site. Being in
charge of new people and
completing the mission was
a challenge. The mission was
a high-priority environment
as opposed to Langley, where
his duties could be completed
at a slower pace.
He was also learning new
things about supervising as an
NCO that he hadn't foreseen
while he was an Airman.
"As an Airman, you say
that you want to do things
different. You don't want to be
like your parents or teachers,"
Barrett said. "As an NCO,
you learn why some things
need to be the way they are,
and communication is huge
no matter what career field
you're in."
Barrett felt it was always
important to inform his
Airmen of the reason behind
his decisions; why they
were impacted; why he
was choosing a particular
direction and why they did
things a certain way.
Once he reached the role
of master sergeant, Barrett
continued to further his
experience supervising others
and to grow as a leader.
While stationed in Hawaii, he
learned the Air Force stands
apart from other branches
of the military in leadership
style.
"In the Army and Navy,
there often isn't time to
ask why," Barrett said.
"However, Airmen are able
to ask questions more often
and build a foundation for
themselves early on."
Before beginning the
mission, it is important for
leaders to build a strong
foundation with their troops
by informing them of what is
expected, Barrett explained.
Educating Airmen on the
values and expectations of
their unit allows them to
perform at their best.
He also stated, leadership
goes beyond the uniform and
in order to be the most help to
their Airmen it is important for
leaders to possess knowledge
of not only policies and
procedures but also the big
picture of the Air Force and
their unit.
There is a wide array of
things that shape a person
as a supervisor, Barrett said.
Location, career field and
personal experiences all play a
role in the way a person leads
and instructs their Airmen.
He explained that a
person needs to draw on
their acquired knowledge of
their job and the Air Force in
order to effectively lead their
people.
"Leaders don't always
make the right decisions,"
Barrett said. "But good
leaders know how to make the
decision right."

FREE CAR SEAT CHECK 10/14/2014
3:00 PM
Ryan Chevrolet (1800 S Broadway). According
to state statistics, eighty percent of kids are using
car seats that haven’t been properly installed. To
help reduce that number, First District Health in
Minot is offering free car seat checks to families
to help prevent accidental deaths in North Dakota.
From rear and forward facing car seats to booster
seats, there are different instructions and weight
requirements for each depending on the make and
model. While many parents are not too far off from
installing car seats correctly, they aren’t securing the child correctly. Often times, the straps are
too loose and the chest strap is too far down on
the child. “You know, that makes a big difference.
If your straps are loose to begin with, you get in
an accident, your padding compresses down, now
you’re way looser, a baby can come right out of that
seat. So, we just want to make sure we got every
step right,” says First District Health injury prevention coordinator Bobbi Dickinson. First District
Health Unit in Minot offers free car seat checks the
second Tuesday of every month at GMC dealerships
in town. To find out more about the program, call
852-1376.
