On behalf of the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen,
I would like to congratulate AmCham on an
extraordinarily successful year. The Embassy is
extremely proud of our strong partnership with
AmCham in support of the efforts of American
businesses operating in Denmark.
During the past year, we have jointly hosted
many successful events, bringing together leaders
from business and politics. We have showcased
U.S. companies and their contributions to Danish
prosperity and productivity. We applaud AmCham’s
mission of working with Danish partners to ensure
that Denmark remains among the best and most
inviting countries for American companies and for
being a driving force in ensuring that American
businesses have an equal opportunity to succeed
here. Recognizing that the success of those firms
contributes to growth and prosperity in Denmark,
this year AmCham named McDonald’s the Foreign
Company of the Year for its innovation, corporate
social responsibility, and investment in employee
education. This is but one acknowledgment of the
contributions all AmCham’s members make to
growth, productivity, and employment in Denmark.
AmCham has established itself here as “The Voice
of International Business,” committed to promoting
a business-friendly environment in Denmark. This
includes efforts to improve Denmark’s ability to
attract and retain foreign companies, such as
AmCham’s Foreign Investor
Summit, which has focused on just
this.
Another highlight this year
was our partnership with the
Confederation of Danish Industry
to launch Green Partnerships for
Growth with Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton and Prime Minister
Helle Thorning-Schmidt. We also
convened for a follow-up event
hosted by DONG Energy. Events
like these demonstrate our
strong commitment to working
together to facilitate public-private
partnerships.
In his State of the Union
address in January 2013,
President Obama announced
the launch of negotiations
towards a Transatlantic Trade
and Investment Partnership with
the European Union. Our two
economies already represent the
world’s largest trade relationship,
accounting for one third of all
global goods and services trade
and one half of global output. The

Trade talks will strengthen our transatlantic partnership
In February, President Obama joined European Commission President
Barroso and European Council President Van Rompuy in announcing
their intention to launch talks on a comprehensive Transatlantic Trade
and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the United States and the
European Union. The transatlantic economy, which already is the world’s
largest, is a success story with potential for significant further growth.
The main goals of the TTIP are to boost economic growth in the United
States and Europe by further opening goods and services markets,
strengthening rules-based investment, addressing non-tariff barriers
and promoting greater regulatory compatibility and transparency.
Additional goals are to enhance cooperation on the development of rules
and principles of global concern, such as standards for State-Owned
Enterprises, and enhancing the competitiveness of small- and mediumsized enterprises. In light of its membership in the EU and its successful
trade-oriented and advanced economy, Denmark stands to benefit
considerably from the conclusion of these negotiations.
As we engage in negotiations, our high ambitions must be
accompanied by political decisiveness and constructive engagement with
stakeholders. We must not let this opportunity pass. Having had the
opportunity to engage with AmCham Denmark’s membership on several
occasions recently, I applaud your efforts to bring together Danish and
American business and political leaders. I encourage your membership
to continue to provide sound advice and constructive support at this
historic time.
William Kennard
WILLIAM E. KENNARD
Ambassador Kennard has
worked actively to promote
transatlantic trade and investment and to eliminate
regulatory barriers to commerce
since assuming his current
position in 2009. Prior to his

This past year, AmCham delivered
one of the strongest programs of
value-added events in its history,
and made significant progress
in the development of our Voice
For International Business. No
other non-governmental business
organization in Denmark has
this niche focus, which makes
us unique and relevant for key
decision makers. This publication
is rich with examples of the access
and accomplishments that took
place during 2012.
2012 provided us with several
opportunities to engage key
ministers, including Margrethe
Vestager, Nick Hækkerup, Astrid
Krag and Holger K. Nielsen. In
May, AmCham partnered with
Dansk Industri for the launch of
‘Green Partnerships for Growth’
with Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton and Prime Minister Helle
Thorning-Schmidt. A follow-up
event in October featured Minister
Martin Lidegaard.
Our policy agenda continued to set
focus on the important role played
by multinational enterprises,
the need for a national talent
strategy and the importance of
creating a competitive, stable and
predictable investment climate in
Denmark.
I hope you find this 2013 Yearbook
& Membership Directory to be a
relevant and informative resource for
your business. My personal thanks to
our sponsors for making this annual
publication a reality.
In the fall, our policy platform
was further enhanced with the
release of AmCham’s ‘2012
Business Barometer’ and our
Healthcare Committee’s report
on ‘The Benefits of a Healthy
Workforce.’ These reports formed
the framework for a successful
Foreign Investor Summit with
Minister Pia Olsen Dyhr.
We rounded out a highly
successful year during the
the much anticipated U.S.
Presidential Election, partnering
with TV2 for an Election Night

Meet the Leaders
19
AmCham boasted a strong lineup
of Meet the Leaders sessions,
where our voice was heard across
the political spectrum.
On January 26, AmCham
Denmark’s Patron Members
gathered at Rydhave, the home
of U.S. Ambassador Laurie S.
Fulton, for AmCham’s annual New
Year’s Reception. This year’s guest
of honor was Danish Minister
for Economics and the Interior
Margrethe Vestager, a key player
in the SRSF government. The
more than 90 business leaders
attending this annual New year’s
event were treated to an array of
creative hors d’oeuvres, courtesy
of Crowne Plaza Copenhagen
Towers.
On March 5, Danish Minister of
Defense Nick Hækkerup met with
more than 75 AmCham Denmark
members and defense industry
representatives to share his views
on today’s security challenges
and his priorities for the Danish
military. The meeting was hosted
by the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel.
In her brief opening remarks,
U.S. Ambassador Laurie S.
Fulton welcomed the Minister
and underscored the strong
U.S. commitment to Denmark,
saying, “We face global challenges
together. Be assured in these
times of demanding fiscal
restraint, we count on Denmark to
continue to be there as a valuable
ally and partner.”
Minister Hækkerup then took
the podium. The focus of his
speech was the important role
of NATO and global cooperation
on defense. “NATO remains the
cornerstone of Danish security
and defense policy…and continues
to play an important role as a
regional organization with global
responsibilities.”
On May 2, Danish Healthcare
Minister Astrid Krag met
with AmCham members to
discuss her vision for the Danish
healthcare system. Healthcare
industry leaders gathered at the
Copenhagen Marriott for the
session, which was the Minister’s
first opportunity to meet with the
international business community.
AmCham’s Healthcare Committee Chair, Dorthe
Mikkelsen (MSD) set the scene for the Minister
by outlining the healthcare committee’s
priorities. Minister Astrid Krag then took
the podium to explain the priorities of her
ministry, including the Ministerial Committee
for New Business and Growth, which will work
across ministries and focus on areas of Danish
excellence, from healthcare and shipping to
environmental/sustainable solutions and
design.
Finally, at AmCham’s 6th annual Foreign
Investor Summit, AmCham joined forces
with Invest in Denmark, and invited Danish
Minister for Trade and Investment Pia Olsen
Dyhr to participate for the 2nd year in a row.
Minister Dyhr emphasized the government’s
commitment to the business community:
“Denmark is open for business, and we are
working intensively on improving the conditions
for foreign investors.”
Adding to the voice of this event was top U.S.
economist Joseph Quinlan (Senior Fellow at the
Center for Transatlantic Relations/Johns Hopkins
and Chief Market Strategist for Bank of America
Global Wealth Management), who spoke on the
importance of the transatlantic relationship
and encouraged EU and Denmark to focus their
attention away from BRIC and instead on the
true top trading partner, the United States.

One of AmCham’s goals is to
provide its members with relevant
information directly from the
experts, which is why we conduct
knowledge exchange events on an
ongoing basis throughout the year.
In March, AmCham teamed
up with Copenhagen Capacity on
The Business Case for Investing
in Denmark event. Participants
gathered at Sølyst to discuss
some good news in these less
than ideal economic times. While
many companies are considering
downsizing and outsourcing,
case studies by DNP Denmark
and YXLON found ways to beat
out India and China and retain
operations and jobs here in
Denmark.
In February, The Heritage
Foundation’s James Roberts
shared the 2012 Index of
Economic Freedom at the
Marriott Copenhagen.
In April, AmCham Denmark
members gathered at the
Radisson Blu Royal Hotel for an
executive leadership session on
How to Increase Competitiveness
in a Global Marketplace, with
Dale Carnegie Training’s CEO,
Peter Handal, who talked about
the importance of being able to
adapt to change: “Change drives
innovation, and innovation is what
makes us competitive.”
In connection with e-Health
Week at the Bella Center,
AmCham Denmark, alongside
HIMSS Europe, organized an
exclusive session featuring Kaiser
Permanente’s Chairman and CEO,
George Halvorson. The discussion
focused on the success of
Kaiser’s IT/connected care model
– something from which many
believe the Danish healthcare
system could benefit.
In the Spring, AmCham teamed
up with the U.S. Embassy’s
Commercial Service for an
informational seminar on The
Future of Data Privacy in the
European Union. Nearly 60
participants convened at the U.S.
Embassy to hear several data
privacy experts discuss the new
proposals and their potential
challenges to businesses.
Better Place CEO Johnny Hansen shows U.S.
Ambassador Fulton the features of their Renault EV
“Data privacy is one of the most critical issues in
the U.S./EU trade relationship,” says speaker Beryl
Blecher, Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs,
U.S. Mission to the EU, “and it’s important to know
that data privacy impacts businesses in all sectors.”
Stakeholders in Denmark present at the event
included Janni Christoffersen, Director of the
Danish Data Protection Agency and Jens Teilberg
Søndergaard, Head of Constitutional Law at the
Ministry of Justice and Chairman of the EU Council’s
Data Protection Working Group. Business cases were
presented by Facebook, IBM and UPS.
In June, AmCham Patron member Better Place
Denmark hosted a Business After Hours event on
the topic of Innovation into the Future. Participants
gathered at Better Place’s stylish showroom in
Hellerup to hear remarks from U.S. Ambassador
Laurie S. Fulton and Better Place CEO, Johnny Hansen:
“Sustainable transportation for the mass market is
inevitable; it is not ‘if’ but ‘when’.”

Each year, AmCham recognizes business
excellence through two special awards:
Transatlantic Company
of the Year
Foreign Company
of the Year
The Transatlantic Company of the Year
highlights the importance, contributions
and positive impact of Danish companies
actively investing in the United States.
In March, the Danish bio-solution
provider, Novozymes, was named
as AmCham’s Transatlantic
Company of the Year, in
recognition of its strong strategic
partnerships in the U.S.
Finalists included Maersk, Ambu,
Bavarian Nordic, Coloplast, Lego
and Santaris Pharma.
In October, McDonald’s Denmark
was named as AmCham’s 2012
Foreign Company of the Year
for demonstrating innovation
and growth in a mature market,
while actively investing in its
employees. Finalists included
Better Place, Biogen Idec, MSD,
UL International Demko and
Verizon Enterprise Solutions.
The Foreign Company of the Year
recognizes the importance and positive
impact of foreign companies investing
in Denmark.
Prior to the award ceremony,
AmCham conducted a
Transatlantic Business
Roundtable, which featured a
keynote by U.S. Ambassador to
the European Union, William E.
Kennard, who spoke about the
importance of removing trade
barriers to the transatlantic
relationship, which dwarfs every
other economic relationship in

One of AmCham’s most
important services to its member
companies is the opportunity
to work together in special
Committees and Task-forces
to address common issues that
directly or indirectly affect their
operations. AmCham committees
drive policy and advocacy,
developing positions that
AmCham can communicate to
key decision makers. Committees
also foster cooperation between
companies, giving members
access to their peers and creating
a forum for developing new
ideas, sharing experiences and,
ultimately, achieving common
goals.
In January, AmCham’s
Healthcare Committee met with
the Healthcare Ministry’s newly
appointed Permanent Secretary,
Per Okkels to discuss the
committee’s healthcare priorities,
including the importance of
utilizing innovative healthcare
solutions and ways to strengthen
Denmark’s unique niche within
clinical trials. The meeting was a
successful dialogue promising a
solutions-oriented cooperation in
the future.

4 AmCham’s Expat Leadership Forum kicks off at Weber’s Grilleriet
In April, AmCham’s Analytical
Instrument Committee held
their 12th annual Executive
Seminars in Analytical Chemistry
(ESAC 2012). More than 200
researchers, chemists, suppliers
and industry experts gathered
at the Scandic Copenhagen Hotel
to hear the latest developments
within Life Science/Biotech,
Pharmaceutical, Food/
Environment and Clinical/
Forensic applications.
In May, AmCham’s Human
Resources Committee met
with Jakob Jensen, Director of
the Danish Agency for Labor
Retention and International
Recruitment. The meeting
focused on the challenges that
companies face when recruiting
foreign talent into Denmark and
on areas for future cooperation.
In October, AmCham’s
Healthcare Committee met
with Allan Søgaard Larsen,
CEO of Falck and Chair of the
Government’s Growth Team
on ‘Health and Welfare Solutions.’ The
session took place just as the Growth
Team was preparing its recommendations
to the Danish Government.
In late November, AmCham’s newly
created Expat Leadership Forum held
its first meeting at Weber’s Grilleriet
in Frihavn. The forum consists of top
level executives and managers across all
sectors, who come together to share their
perspectives and best practices in order
to find ways to lead efficiently. This initial
session was focused on understanding
the Danish culture and sharing ideas
for becoming a more effective leader in
Denmark.
In December, AmCham’s Finance
Committee and Board met with newly
Appointed Danish Tax Minister Holger K.
Nielsen to discuss its overall policy agenda
as well as the government’s recent tax
initiatives. Top on AmCham’s agenda was
the growing investment gap, the key role
of multinational companies to the Danish
economy and the importance of ensuring
a stable and predictable corporate tax
environment for companies investing in
Denmark.

Green Partnerships for Growth
27
In May, more than 220 politicians
and business leaders gathered at
the Danish Parliament for the launch
of Green Partnerships for Growth
(GPG) by U.S. Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton and Danish Prime
Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt.
This bilateral initiative builds
on the success of previous Green
Partnership events in 2010 and
2011, but takes the initiative
further to the two nations’ public
sectors as well as private sectors.
GPG includes the U.S. Embassy,
The Confederation of Danish
Industry (DI) and AmCham, along
with other partners, to facilitate a
series of structured events aimed
at connecting the public sectors in
the U.S. and Denmark - with the
experience, knowledge, products
and services of green growth
companies in both countries.
Already in October, more than 100
business leaders and stakeholders
gathered at Dong Energy’s headquarters in Gentofte for a second
GPG event, which focused on sharing
ideas and best practices for energy
efficiency and how companies and
governments can work together to
meet the goals of the future.
In introductory remarks, U.S.
Ambassador Laurie S. Fulton spoke
about the background for Green
Partnerships, as well as President
Obama’s “Blueprint for a Secure
Energy Future” and the many
green initiatives led by the U.S.
government.
In a keynote address, Danish
Minister for Climate, Energy
and Building Martin Lidegaard
explained how energy efficiency
is at the core of the government’s
energy and climate policy.
A second session featured
business leaders from GE, Mærsk,
3M, United Technologies and
Danfoss, who shared their
successful experiences in the
business of going green.
The conference was rounded out
by Graham Pugh, from the U.S.
Department of Energy, and David
Gilford, from the New York City
Economic Development Corp., who
talked in depth about many of the
initiatives that are underway in the
U.S.

AmCham’s Education and Integration Fund
29
As the leading representative of international business in Denmark, AmCham bears the responsibility of not only speaking out on
issues that affect its members, but also contributing to effective, long term solutions to these issues. It is our belief that two of
the biggest challenges facing Denmark lie within the areas of Education and Integration. Therefore, on the occasion of AmCham
Denmark’s 10th Anniversary Celebration (May 2009), the Board of Directors established an Education and Integration Fund for
initiatives enhancing Denmark’s competitiveness in terms of attaining foreign investments and a sustainable, quality workforce.
The fund has resulted in a cooperation between AmCham Denmark and the Fulbright Commission, which AmCham continued in
2012 by selecting two beneficiaries: Renee Cooper and Vincent Rosenbaum Appel.
Renee Cooper
Renee Cooper is a Professor at the
Fashion Institute of Technology
in the Fashion Merchandising
Management Department. She is
also Assistant Chairperson of the
department and has been a member
of the faculty since 2000. She holds
a Bachelor’s Degree in Business
Administration, as well as a degree
in Global Fashion Management.
While teaching at KEA
Copenhagen in Spring 2013,
her objective is to deliver her
students best practice business
trends regarding technology
implementation, the impact of
social media, strategic management
techniques, customer relationship
management and preparation for
entrepreneurial ventures.
Vincent Rosenbaum Appel
Vincent Appel is a student at
Copenhagen University, working on
a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics
in the Department of Biology. He
currently holds a Bachelor’s degree in
Nano Science. Vincent has dreamed of
studying abroad since high school, and
is thrilled to have been accepted into
UC Berkeley as a graduate student as a
part of the University of Copenhagen’s
exchange program. He was attracted to
Bioinformatics because of his fascination
with cell and evolutionary biology.
The course in Bioinformatics at
Berkeley is structured around medium
sized projects in which students apply
their knowledge to genuine issues in
collaboration with a team of scientists.

Why choose Denmark as your business location?
You will benefit from Scandinavia’s largest
recruitment base of highly skilled employees,
competitive salaries, and Europe’s most flexible
labor market, allowing companies to scale up and
down to specific business needs. We also offer the
cheapest office rental prices of all major cities in
Scandinavia as well as a number of highly specialized
industries within various sectors.
Benefit from ideal framework conditions on top of
persuasive commercial arguments.
The Wall Street Journal
...has ranked Denmark as the number one country
in the world to start a new business.
39
Easy to establish
– easy to do business
Flexible labor law
– easy to scale headcounts
A company can be incorporated online within
a few hours. No Danish residence requirement
applies for registered management, allowing
foreign management to maintain complete
control, and no local shareholder requirement
applies.
Denmark offers the most flexible hiring and
firing in Europe. Accordingly, scaling up and down
is very cost-efficient and easy. Generally, no
restrictions apply in relation to firing approvals
from unions, ‘last in, first out’, or other obstacles
in case a company has to scale down.
A unique tax rule
– perfect for a European expansion
Social security payment
– virtually none
In most other countries, expansion through
branches leads to double taxation. However,
according to a unique Danish tax rule, income
deriving from foreign branches of a Danish
company is generally not taxed in Denmark.
Saving costs and administration by avoiding
double tax challenges makes Denmark an
attractive location for regional headquarters.
Competitive corporate tax
– proposed reduction to 22%
The Danish government has presented
an ambitious reform to improve Danish
competiveness even further. Reducing the
corporate tax rate over a 3-year period is part
hereof. Structuring the Danish company as
a profit centre will often result in global tax
savings.
As part of the world-famous Danish flexicurity
model, the employer only pays social security
corresponding to EUR 1,350 per employee per
year. The employer in Denmark, as opposed
to most other European countries, pays no
additional social security payment on top of
the salary.
Even more benefits
– unlimited talent
Denmark offers a number of other advantages
such as fasttrack work permits for non-EU
employees, expat taxation of only 26% for five
years, and a number of other benefits that may
be advantageous for your business.
GSK Danmark
“Despite the economic turmoil and financial crisis, we sustained our level of clinical

Microsoft Development Center Denmark
“A key advantage of being based in Denmark is the easy access to really strong talent in the
engineering area. Talents, who think about customer needs and how to build applications
that meet those needs. We have 600 employees working on site and about one third of our
employees has another nationality than Danish and represents 40 different nationalities.”

IT infrastructure
Denmark is a frontrunner within Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) and a prime
location for international companies looking
to expand their business. Not only is Denmark
praised as the best test market in the world, it
also has world-class IT infrastructure with some
of the world’s highest ICT penetration rates for
mobiles, broadband and PCs. Danish research
institutions are among the most well-renowned
in the world when it comes to areas related
to wireless and mobile technology, software

“One important reason why Siemens will continue to stay in Denmark is that we see the
advantages of the Danes’ high level of productivity and talent. In Denmark we are always
able to recruit resourceful people with extensive knowledge and a high education level.”
Jens-Peter Saul, CEO
42
Cleantech:
Denmark is a frontrunner
Despite being a small country, Denmark is a world
leader in cleantech. Denmark has gone from being
99 per cent dependent on foreign fossil fuel to a
completely energy self-sufficient country.
Almost 40 years of ambitious energy policy
targets have catapulted Denmark ahead of most
other nations in the use of renewable energy
technology. Denmark has taken the lead position
in sustainable energies, including wind, wave,
solar, bioenergy, and geothermal energy.
Protection of the environment is a major industry
and focus area in Denmark. Knowledge and
opportunities are vast within water, wastewater,
air purification, sustainable building materials,
waste incineration and recycling.
EIU’s Global Talent Index
...considers Denmark Europe’s biggest talent hotspot.

Regional
Headquarters
An increasing number of companies are saving costs
by covering the Nordic, Baltic or European region from
Denmark. With Scandinavia’s airport hub located in
Copenhagen, and excellent port, railway and road

your regional headquarters.
3,400 international companies
– including Shell, Biogen Idec, Intel, Microsoft, Siemens

Exploring Life
Terminals in:
Seven billion people already live on our planet,
and the number is growing by 220,000 every day.
- How can we provide food for more and more
people without damaging the environment?
- How can we improve everyone’s health and
prevent diseases ?
- How can we develop new materials to help
us conserve resources ?
Research is under way in Bayer’s subgroups to
provide better answers to these questions whose
importance to the future of humankind grows by
the day.

SAFER CITIES
THRIVING COMMUNITIES
Resources diminish and become harder

communications race.
Within the information flowing between
citizens, responders and agencies is the
intelligence that builds a safer city. Motorola

Solutions can help you collect more of it, make
it actionable and securely distribute it across
mission critical devices and easy-to-manage
networks. It’s the technology and expertise
that turns noise into information, information
into intelligence, and intelligence into safety.
And it’s how to do the absolute most with
less – build safer cities, counties, states and
provinces… and communities that thrive.
