Dear Parishioners,
As we celebrate the 28th Sunday in our Ordinary Time, I have decided to
use our second reading for our Mass this weekend as a way of challenging each of
you and the entire parish to continue being the stewards to which God calls us. In
that second reading Paul writes to the Church of Philippi a beautiful letter with
much food for thought. Paul states that he knows how to live both in humble as
well as in abundant circumstances. He states that “he has learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I
can do all things in Him who strengthens me.” What beautiful words coming from
a man who experienced much in life. Then he tells us from his experiences of trusting in God in all circumstances, that he learned a valuable lesson in life. And that
lesson, namely, is that “my God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with
His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” This is the heart of stewardship, to be able to
trust in our God who will fully supply whatever we need. I know that this is difficult to do, but for those who have done so, they will definitely tell you that when
they trust in God, that somehow God will fulfill their needs. Now one of the realities of stewardship is understanding the difference between needs and wants. The
needs are the things that matter, our priorities; the wants are the temptations of the
material world, the luxuries that lure us into keeping up with our neighbors, temptations that will never satisfy these longings. As good stewards, we know that God
will supply all of our needs, therefore, we can use our time, talents, and treasures to
give back to Him with thankful hearts. It is at this point that we begin to let go of
things and find our God who is present to strengthen us.
Next Saturday, October 18th, some couples of our parish will assist me in
helping prepare engaged couples for the sacrament of marriage. This is what we
call our “Pre-Cana” day. I ask your special prayers for those who are preparing for
marriage as well as those who are helping them prepare for this lifetime commitment. This is a beautiful example of couples of our parish who are practicing stewardship as they share their time and talents with these young people.
Also, next Thursday, October 16th, we will be hosting a special forum to
help us learn more about the special Quincy School Building referendum that is being proposed for the November 4th election. This forum will take place at 7:00
p.m. in the cafeteria. I want to personally invite you to this meeting so that you will
be able to make an informed decision when you vote. As I acquaint myself with all
the aspects of this referendum, I also realize that this vote will affect our community
of Quincy on many differing levels. The stronger our public schools are, the
stronger will our parochial schools be—and vice versa. Second, we also owe it to
make sure that all of our students are provided with a safe and secure education—
knowing that this is a drawing card for businesses and people to move into the area.
And finally, through the years I have grown to appreciate a strong public school as
they provide an education to some students that are far beyond any of our resources.
So I ask you come and join us next Thursday, to have your questions answered, and
to gain some knowledge as to be an informed “electorate.” Please be there!

Social Concerns Meeting
Social Concerns will be meeting Friday, October 17 at 8:30
a.m. in the Martha Jane Room. All welcome!
Chess Club
The St. Peter Chess Club is starting again. Our first meeting
will be on Monday, October 13th at 6:30pm In the Maria Goretti
room. All students in grades K-8th grade are invited to join the
group. Beginners to skilled players are welcome. You do not
have to know how to play chess to participate.
World Mission Sunday
Next weekend our parish will celebrate World Mission Sunday.
This year we are invited to reach out and help build the Church
in Mongolia, the world’s youngest Catholic Church, as well as
local churches throughout the missions in the most remote areas across our world. Through the work of these churches and
their witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God’s love and mercy, His hope and peace. Please keep
the missions in your daily prayers. Please come prepared next
weekend to give generously to the collection for the Society for
the Propagation of the Faith. For more information, please visit

CD of the Week: “A Voice For The Unborn” by Lila
Rose who is only in her early 20s but has been a
frequent guest on “The O’Reilly Factor”, Hannity” and other

Pre-Cana
Every couple married in the Catholic Church in our diocese
is required to attend a formal and approved marriage preparation program. St. Peter is offering a one-day Pre-Cana
workshop on October 18, 2014. Lead couples and presenters will help engaged couples to look at important issues
that the couple will encounter in their married life. Engaged
couples planning to marry can register for this one-day encounter by calling the parish office at 222-3155. If you wish

First Reconciliation Prayer Partners
The second grade students of St. Peter are preparing to
celebrate their First Reconciliation in early December. To
remind themselves that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who
cares for His sheep, the children have make cards and
sheep to share with a parish prayer partner who will accompany one student particularly by praying for them during the
next several months. If you wish to share in the preparation
by being a prayer partner, please pick up a wooly sheep with
an attached card from the table in the narthex. Place it
where you will be reminded to say a daily pray or do a kind
deed for one of our little sheep preparing for First Reconciliation.
Stewardship Corner
Stewardship is an important concept for our spiritual
growth as Catholics. It is a way of thanking God for all His
blessings by returning to Him a portion of the time, talent
and treasure we have received.
QPS Building Bond Referendum Information Forum
Quincy Public School Building Bond Referendum Informational Forum will be held Thursday, October 16, 2014 at
7pm in the St Peter Church Cafeteria. Learn about why you
should vote YES for Quincy’s Future.
Remembering Loved Ones Who Have Died
St. Peter Parish will remember loved ones who have died
in two special ways during November:
1. By entering names into our Book of the Dead, which will
be on the St. Joseph Altar in November.
2. By celebrating their lives during a Mass of Remembrance at 9:30 a.m. Mass on All Souls Day, Sunday,
November 2nd.
Parishioners who have died this past year will be included.
If you have others you would like to have remembered,
please fill out a card on the table in the Narthex.

FIRE PREVENTION MONTH ACTIVITY: The
three year old preschool classes had a visit from the Quincy Fire Department. They

equipment used by the firemen in case
they are fighting a fire. Thank you to the
Quincy Fire Department for coming to
school.

"Today vast numbers of people still do not know Jesus Christ." Pope Francis begins his message for this year's celebration of World Mission Sunday with these words. But he quickly offers us the way to make a joy-filled, life-giving difference in this
regard. "World Mission Sunday is a privileged moment when the faithful of various continents engage in prayer and concrete
gestures of solidarity in support of the young Churches in mission lands."

On October 19, as our diocesan family celebrates this "privileged moment," let us join our brothers and sisters around
the world who will gather at the Lord's Table to celebrate, with great joy, our common vocation as missionaries. Our prayers and

Fr. Leo’s column continued
Next weekend, October 18-19th, we will have
our annual appeal for the TEC program in our community. As many of you know, this TEC program, “Teens
Encounter Christ,” has played a major role in the lives
of teens in our community, helping them draw closer to
Christ in and through the Church. But each weekend is
costly in terms of rent and food and many of our young
people would not be able to have such an experience
without some outside financial assistance.
So next
weekend, a rep from the TEC community will speak at
all the Masses, asking for your help. Special envelopes
will be provided and you can put these envelopes in the
collection basket either next weekend or the weekend
after. Thank you for your openness and generosity.
Also, pictures of couples married 25 years and
older are needed for our annual day of celebration of
marriage to be held on Saturday, October 25th. Please
bring these pictures to the parish office.
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE: A religious sister
was on her way to visit a sick person in the parish. Suddenly, a little red car sped around her car. The driver
pointed to the back left wheel. Just at that moment, she
realized the tire was going flat.
She pulled into a driveway and got out to look at
the tire. All of a sudden, the red car zipped into the
driveway. A young man got out. “Sr. Grace,” he said,
“get back into your car. I’ll fix the tire.”
As he changed the tire, Sister and the young
man talked. “You remember me,” he said. “Mike Sinn.
You visited me in the hospital.”
It occurred to Sister that this was probably the
first time that Grace was
saved by Sinn.

Kristopher Schreacke Benefit
Kristopher is the 14-year old son of Kevin and Carrie
Schreacke of Quincy who has spent the past 2+ months
in St. Louis Children's Hospital due to complications from
a GI surgery.
The benefit will be Sunday, October 12, Noon to
4:00pm at the KC’s Fr. McGivney Hall. Plan to join us for
lunch and an afternoon of family fun! Live auction, silent
auction, food & drinks, bake sale, kids’ activities.
Protecting God’s Children at St. Dominic School

Celebrating Marriage on October 25th
St. Peter Parish will honor parishioners who have been
married for 25 years or more at the 5:00 p.m. Mass on
Saturday, October 26. At that Mass, long-married couples
will receive a special blessing and will be listed in the bulletin.
Couples who wish to be included are asked to complete
this card and return it to the Parish Office no later than
Friday, October 17. You may also submit a photo of the
couple, as there will also be a slideshow of photos before
Mass. Or you may email this information and a picture to
[email protected].
