Dear Parishioners,
Often times we have a tendency in life to overthink things, as well as complicate things that are not to be complicated. This often occurs even in the realm of
our faith. If we were to ask, what is the most important part of our faith, I wonder
what answer might be given. This was the case even in Jesus’ time. The Jewish
people had a complex set of laws to follow, both written and oral. These laws governed the behavior of the “good people,” and separated these people from those
who did not follow the law—those not so good, commonly called “sinners.” In an
effort to once again entrap Jesus, the leaders or the “good people” asked Him,
“Teacher, which commandment of the law is the greatest?” I am always amazed at
Jesus’ keen understanding of human nature. He knew their intentions so he juxtaposed the two commandments that were very much central to their faith life. He
stated that “you shall love God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all
your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment.” This is the beginning
point of our relationship with God, and the very purpose of our lives—to love Him
with every fiber of our being. But then Jesus states, “you shall love your neighbor
as yourself.” From Jesus’ understanding, the “whole law and the prophets depend
upon these two commandments.” Yes, this is the foundation of our moral lives and
are quite simple. Yes, these commandments are not complicated. But no, these
commandments are not easily followed for both go against our very nature as human beings. As Jesus instructs us as to what is important in our lives as His followers, may each of us translate them into our daily lives.
Next Saturday, November 1st, is the Solemnity of All Saints. Because this
Solemnity falls on a Saturday, it is Not a Holyday of Obligation. In fact, the
evening Mass for that day will be the anticipated feast of All Soul’s Day. I remember in my childhood serving a number of Masses on that day for the priests of the
parish for it was on this day that each priest had the privilege of celebrating three
Masses. Unfortunately because of the decline in vocations, this is a necessary reality rather than a one time privilege.
For those of you who remember the “Apostle’s Creed,” you will remember
proclaiming our belief in the “Communion of Saints.” This Communion of Saints
is defined at the Church militant (those living saints here on earth), the Church suffering (those saints in purgatory), and the Church triumphant (those saints in heaven.) Reinforcing our communion with each other through prayer and sacrifice, we
will have the Book of the Dead present near the St. Joseph altar and shrine. If you
have a deceased loved one that you want remembered, please write their names on a
form in the Narthex. Throughout November we will be remembering all those listed
in this Book of the Dead. We also will have a special Mass of Remembrance next
Sunday at the 9:30 a.m. Mass where parishioners who have died this past year will
be remembered at Mass. Our celebrations this month are a strong reminder that our
lives here on earth are only transitory, preparing ourselves for the ultimate goal of
being at home with the Lord in heaven. May each of the deceased listed in our
Book of the Dead rest in peace.

TEC #296, Nov 15-17
TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) is an opportunity for a special time in a young person’s life. Team members of adults

experienced in their own lives. TEC provides a space to reflect upon one’s own ideals, hopes, dreams, and problems;
to discover a God that you can believe in, a Christ you can
encounter as risen and alive in your midst. TEC #296 will
be directed by Kim Knotts. TEC weekends are held at the
Franciscan Retreat Center of Quincy University, 18th & Seminary Road, Quincy, IL 62301. The weekend begins Saturday morning at 9:30am and ends Monday evening 6:006:30pm.
