Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
COME TO THE FEAST
“On this mountain, the Lord of hosts / will provide for
all peoples / a feast of rich food and choice wines” (Isaiah
25:6). That’s what Isaiah tells us today. God is putting together a huge party for “all peoples,” to “wipe away / the
tears from every face” (Isaiah 25:8).
And what does Jesus tell us? The reign of God, he
says, “may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast
for his son” (Matthew 22:2). When the guests didn’t come,
the king had his servants go out “into the main roads and
invite to the feast whomever you find” (Matthew 22:9). We
are called to deliver that invitation.
One of the themes woven into today’s liturgy is that of
divine generosity. Asleep to reality, people often think they
have “earned” what they have. In our better moments,
though, we know that all our gifts—even the spiritual
gifts—come through God’s generosity. Our vocation is to
invite people, to remind them the tickets aren’t for sale.
We can only show up and say thank you.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The confessional is a familiar setting in literature and
drama. Everyone from Dostoevsky and Shakespeare
down the line to Seinfeld has used the sacrament to tragic
or comic effect or to reveal aspects of character otherwise
hidden. All of this theater, from world classics to slapstick,
has had a numbing effect on our own expectations, and
has skewed how the culture looks at us and our struggle
with sin and forgiveness, hope and healing.
Yet the artists are on to something. The reconciliation
chapel is a place where hearts are laid bare, where honesty is the watchword, and people confess their deepest
needs. It is also a place of rebirth, or at least realignment.
It is, like the baptismal font, a place where something
dies, and where something else is born. Today, although
literature has barely caught up, the place is usually not the
dark and gloomy cabinet of old; rather it is a chapel that
speaks of peace, serenity, and the comfort of a welcome
home. People in one parish were astonished recently to
see their children skipping with delight as they left the
place of their first confession. We have to wait a bit for
world literature to catch up with this reality, but at least we
can experience the joy of penance, the thrill of a new beginning, the assurance of God’s love.

The Month of the Rosary
Why is October the month
of the Rosary? Prior to a battle against an invading Turkish
army, Pope St. Pius V called
for all of Europe to pray for
victory against their attack.
When a smaller force won
against this larger invading
army, the Pope established the feast of the Holy Rosary
on October 7, 1571. The origins of the rosary are not
very clear. Legend has it that the rosary was given to St.
Dominic in an apparition by the Blessed Mother in 1214.
However, the development of the rosary might have been
more gradual during the 12th and 13th centuries. Prayers
with beads, like the rosary (from the Latin rosarium,
meaning “Crown of Roses” or “garland of roses”), may
have been introduced to the laity to imitate the monastic
Liturgy of the Hours. As the monks prayed the 150
Psalms daily, the laity who could not read were introduced to the rosary to help them reflect on the life of Jesus and Mary.
But this prayer, while it appears simple, actually has
a spiritual depth to it. It has 3 levels of prayer. On the
surface, when we pray the rosary, we’re asking Mary to
intercede for us. At another level, as we meditate on the
mysteries, we can be asking the Spirit to help us imitate
Mary or Jesus in saying “Yes” to God and to doing God’s
will in good and bad times. And at a deeper level still, we
invite the Spirit of God to pray in us and with us to God.
St. Paul in his letter to the Romans (8:26) wrote that
sometimes, “we do not know what we ought to pray for,
but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless
groans.” An example of this is at the death of a loved
one. In moments of great sorrow, words fail us. We
don’t have the words to pray. So St. Paul wisely taught
us, that the Spirit will intercede for us. In praying the
rosary, we create the space and framework in our lives to
allow the Spirit to pray in us, with us, and for us.
Mother Mary in her apparition at Medjugorje has
taught that she gives us 5 pebbles against the Goliaths we
face. They are: 1-going to mass, 2-confession (conversion), 3-spiritual reading (e.g. – Bible), 4-fasting, and
5-praying the rosary. Just as Pope St. Pius V called on all
Christians to pray for victory against the enemy, so our
Mother Mary offers us the Rosary to help us bring God’s
victory in our lives. “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray
for us sinners now and at the hour of our death, Amen.”

Let us all give him a warm welcome!
Scripture Study: If you’re interested in learning more
about the Bible, you are invited to join our reflections on
Saint Paul’s two letters to his co-worker, Timothy.
Meetings are held every Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in
the Rectory. Bibles are provided, or you may bring your

A Favor — When Receiving Communion: A volunteer
here at Saint Anne’s who hand-washes the purificators
used for the Communion Cup shared with me that lipstick
on the purificators is very difficult to remove. May I ask a
favor of those who use lipstick and plan to receive Communion from the Cup that you please blot your lipstick before receiving the Cup? That would make washing the
purificators a lot easier. Thank you.—Fr. Dan

As the painting of our church nears completion, some
folks are wondering why we put so much money into this project
rather than addressing other needs. The answer? The painting
project was mandated by the Archdiocese about five years ago.
