Invitation to a Feast O 11 & 12, 2014

OCTOBER 11 & 12, 2014
TWENTY EIGHTH SUNDAY OF
ORDINARY TIME
Invitation to a Feast
Thanksgiving is not actually a Catholic feast or holiday. But if we are interested in exploring a
theme of thanksgiving and gratitude, the timing of today's readings is very providential.
In the first reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah, he describes the rich feast, that is to
say, salvation, that is in store for "all peoples". This particular feast transcends all feasts, because when we make it to that banquet table, "he will swallow up death forever".
In the second reading, from Paul's letter to the Philippians, he exudes joy and gratitude in all
his circumstances. "I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty". Paul
offers this assurance, "my God will fully satisfy every need of yours."
Finally, in Matthew's Gospel, we see Jesus' parable to the chief priests and Pharisees. A king
invites guests to a wedding banquet, only to be increasingly disappointed as his invitation is
repeatedly rejected. How can it be, that an offer to sit at this amazing banquet table can be
turned down so carelessly? Today we can ask ourselves, how have we responded to this
invitation?
Our readings today can influence the way we celebrate Thanksgiving. We may collect ourselves and adopt an interior disposition of gratitude, not just for the fleeting satisfaction of good
food and fun times with our loved ones, but for the greatest banquet table that is to come, the
eternal feast to which we are all invited.
“..and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.”

THANK YOU
Expressing true gratefulness is hard to contain to one day. We
are blessed daily. At this time of Thanksgiving, on behalf of my
late husband Brian Crookes, my daughters Alex, Angie, and
me, I would like to express our sincere gratitude for the banner
that presently hangs to the left of the Altar during Ordinary
time. Lee and Paula Ettinger and family, Greg and Jody Vavra
and family and Dave and Shelley Horn and family graciously
donated and commissioned this banner in memoriam of Brian. We appreciate this generous gift and wanted to
acknowledge it to St. Michael Catholic Community……...Mary
Anne Crookes.
