A Message from the Principal
The school year continues to move along at a rapid pace. I
continue to be amazed by the intelligence, talents, and spirit
of our Olathe East students. They truly make coming to
work each day an amazing experience. As we have started the school year, I want to thank you for your support
of Olathe East. Your care and support our crucial to the
success of our school community. I want to send a special
thank you to all who have supported our school community
during the last couple of weeks following the injury to football player, James McGinnis. Your thoughts and well wishes have been heartfelt and very
much appreciated. If you ever have any concern or question, I encourage you to please
feel free to contact us. From time to time, we will make a mistake or overlook something.
We have already had progress reports, and before long, we will be preparing ourselves for
Parent-Teacher Conferences, on October 15 (4:30-8:30 PM) and October 16 (11:00 AM8:00 PM, with a dinner break from 4:00-4:45 PM). This will be a great time to meet face
to face with your student’s teachers. Hopefully by now, you have been able to log in to
ParentVUE, to access your student’s grades and monitor their progress.
We continue to celebrate a number of successes with our students. We received exciting
news that Olathe East has seven seniors who have attained the designation as a National
Merit Semi-Finalist. These seniors are Erica Chang, Emma Clark, Saurabh Harohalli,
Adam Khan, Angela Li, Ian Matches and Haotian Xue. We are very proud of these students, and we wish them luck as they strive to be designated as a finalist. Also recognized
through National Merit was Jadrian Salmans, who was recognized as a National Hispanic
Scholar. Junior, Selina Liu, will be recognized at the October Board of Education Meeting for receiving a perfect ACT composite score of 36. Also, congratulations to Henry
Zimmerman, senior, who was chosen as one of the 18 best trumpets in the nation as part
of the National Honor Concert Band. This is the first time ever that a band member from
Olathe East has been chosen.
We will be holding our Assessment Day here at Olathe East on October 15. Each grade
level has specific activities that they will be taking part in. Our 9th grade students will be
taking the ACT Explore. This assessment will provide valuable feedback to your student
related to their preparation and career interests. The sophomore class will participate in
the ACT Plan. This is a follow-up to the ACT Explore taken the previous year. Junior
students have a choice of taking the PSAT, which is the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, or they will take a practice ACT. Freshman and sophomore students also have
the option to sign up for the PSAT. At the date of this newsletter, the registration date for
PSAT has passed. Senior students will have a special breakfast, and they will meet with
Jostens in regards to their caps, gowns, invitations, and other items. This is a partial day
of school. Testing during this day will run from 8:00 AM until 11:30 AM. Busses for the
day will run at 12:00 noon.

The football team has started the season with a 3-1 record.
The first game was a big win for the Hawks playing a western Kansas powerhouse Garden City team who has since
won their last two games. Next the Hawks stumbled against
Olathe South but came back the next week with a victory
over Shawnee Mission South. The end of September brought
Homecoming vs. SMN with the Hawks coming away with

a 31 - 14 win. Coach Meyers and the whole program wants
to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers and support
during a tough time dealing with one of our brothers, James
McGinnis’, serious injury. He continues to improve and we

This year’s 2014 fall soccer teams (below) are off to a great
start. Tryouts were grueling and the players are continuing
to work hard at practice. These efforts are paying huge dividends with a cumulative record of 16-5-1 amongst all three
teams. The varsity has a 8-1 record scoring 30 goals and
only allowing 4. The JV has a 6-1-1 record and the C team
is 2-3 gathering shutouts in their two victories. September
18 was an exciting night for OE soccer with all three teams
getting victories over city rival Olathe South. We look forward to the upcoming challenging schedule and hope to be
playing our best come the post season playoffs towards the

The cross country teams
are off to a great start for the
2014 season. The varsity girls’ team (below), ranked #2 in the
Kansas Cross Country Coaches poll, won the Baldwin Invitational in a match-up of the state’s top ranked teams. In addition
they won the Bishop Miege Invitational and were second by
one point at the Olathe East Class Classic. Kayla Davis won the
Olathe East and Miege titles, and was second at the Baldwin
meet. The junior varsity and C team ladies have also scored
victories in the season at Miege, Baldwin and Olathe East. The
boys’ cross country team won the Miege and Olathe East team
titles and was third at the Baldwin Invitational. Nick Skinner
scored victories at Olathe East and Miege Invitationals and
placed second at the Baldwin meet. The JV boys and C boys
swept to victory at the Olathe East and Miege meets, and were
second in both races at Baldwin. The teams run next at the Topeka Seaman Invitational on October 4. Coach Tony Bozarth

gymnastics team is currently undefeated. The girls competed on Saturday, September 20 and took first place at the
Shawnee Mission North Invitational. At that same meet

School volleyball teams playing simultaneously with a rose
ceremony in between the Varsity and Junior Varsity regularly scheduled games to honor cancer victims and survivors
with a close connection to the players. The varsity games
begin at 6pm. We are encouraging all fans to come decked

The girls golf (below) team is off and running. The team
consists of 15 ladies, many of them new to golf and with
little experience. But with hard work and practice, we are
seeing lots of improvement. We welcomed new assistant
coach, Mike Alvarez, and he is getting our junior varsity in
shape. We look forward to the remainder of the season and
have high hopes of competing in post season play at regionals and state. Coach Kathy Lilley

The volleyball team is currently ranked in the top 25 in the
nation and #1 in Kansas 6A. The Hawks return every player
from the 2013 team that won the first volleyball state championship in school history. This season the Hawks have
wins over state ranked opponents Blue Valley, Blue Valley
North, Blue Valley Northwest, Olathe Northwest, Washburn
Rural and Hayden. The team has a record of 15-3 and 7-0
in the Sunflower League. The Hawks’ next home match
will be on October 7 at the Olathe Dig Pink event against
Olathe Northwest. This event includes all four Olathe High

Looking Ahead
Winter sports teams will start their try outs and practices
on Monday, November 17. The exception is bowling where
the tryouts will be the week following Thanksgiving break-Wednesday, November 26 through Friday, November 28 at
Olathe Lanes East from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. Any student interested in participating in basketball, wrestling, boys’ swimming or bowling MUST have a parent-and-student-signed
physical form and a parent-and-student-signed concussion
form on file in the school office before they can participate
in any of these sports. Please don’t wait until the last minute. Both forms can be found in the front office or on our
OE website. Be sure to print all four pages of the physical
and sign the last page. Forms obtained at the doctor’s office
typically only include the second page. Students must turn
in all four of the pages completed to be eligible to participate in practices and tryouts. Physicals must be dated after
May 1, 2014.

Spanish National Honor Society News
Environmental Design News
Freshman Environmental Design students took a field
trip on September 23, to learn more about Kansas City
Architecture and Architectural styles.
The students toured buildings in the 9th Street Historic
District, including the Scarritt building and the Savory
Hotel and Grill, as well as walking through the Quality
Hill neighborhood and touring the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
While visiting the RMTA Architecture firm, Matt Masilionis (below), who is a partner in the firm and also an
Olathe East parent, was kind enough to share information
on the Quality Hill neighborhood and the building in
which his firm is housed. Matt also spoke to the students
about his architectural firm and shared interesting information about the field of architecture.

Hola! SNHS is off to a great start this year and has some additional awesome things planned for the 2014-2015 school year!
We started the year with applications. SNHS inductees are
required to be in Spanish 3, 4, or 5 and have a 3.75 Spanish
GPA, and a 3.6 overall GPA. Active members participated in
welcoming pledges on September 18; this entailed pledges
getting called out of their second hour for a couple of minutes to get mustaches drawn on their faces, little sombreros
put on their heads, and brightly colored signs that said
“Propiedad de SNHS”(property of SNHS) placed around
their necks . Later that day we held a meeting for the new
inductees. At the meeting, we congratulated the inductees
and explained that they needed to get 15 hours of community service in the Hispanic community in order to stay in
SNHS. Members and inductees can volunteer at Mission
Southside, Faithworks, and many other places that help the
Hispanic community.
After the application process started, we had a great time
making a Dora themed homecoming float. We made our
shopping cart Dora’s backpack and had several actives dress
up as characters from the show.
This year’s officers have been awesome with putting in time
to prepare for all that we have planned. The officers are Kennedy Poro and Thomas Williams (co-president), Ken Xue
(vice president), Lauren Hart and Morgan Martin (secretaries), Nikki Kuhn and Chelsia Sooksengdao (historians),
and Paige Engle(publicity) along with our fantastic sponsor
Ms. Pamela Valentine! We are looking forward to making a
positive impact on the Hispanic community and having an

Rounding out the field trip, after lunch at Crown Center,
the students toured Union Station, taking photographs and
drawing architectural features found within the building.
Wall of Honor
Applications for 2014-2015 Wall of Honor recipients are
being accepted right now. The Wall of Honor recognizes students for accomplishments done in and outside of
Olathe East for which they are not honored anywhere
else. Students chosen for The Wall of Honor have a brick
in an OE hallway painted in their honor recognizing
their achievement(s). A faculty panel votes on the student applicants. The next faculty panel voting will take
place in early December. To apply or learn more about
it, get an application on the Olathe East website. Please

Hawk Leaders Update
Track Silent Auction
The Olathe East Track and Field team will be
holding their annual silent auction during Parent/Teacher Conferences on October 15 and 16.
There will be KU basketball tickets, a selection
of autographs from professional athletes including a football signed by Jamal Charles and
jerseys signed by Justin Houston and Mark Ingram, chiropractor visits, numerous restaurant
certificates and much more. The auction will be
in the commons. Please stop by and support the
track and field team.
Over one month into the school year and the 2014 season of
Hawk Leaders continues to stay busy! We have a lot to catch you up on.
Past mentor sessions we have done with the freshmen include; Looking at the Future, Time Management and Making Choices. In the lesson Looking at the Future, freshman were led through
several activities that would help them realize the importance of
setting goals and help them realize what their future goals are. Our
Time Management lesson included activities to allow freshmen to
understand how to shape their days and time in order to meet the
goals that they set for themselves in the previous lesson. The Making
Choices lesson included teaching students to realize that choices they
make now will not only affect their success in high school, but life
after high school as well.
Friday, September 19 was our first ever freshman tailgate at
a varsity football game. It started at 5:30 with snacks and drinks provided for the freshmen. The purpose of the tailgate was to encourage
freshman participation at sporting events and teach them some of
the popular OE Cheers. The Hawk Leaders taught the freshman all
the cheers and really emphasized the importance of school spirit.
We had a great turnout for the first tailgate, and our hope for future
years is to continue to publicize this event and really encourage the
freshman to get involved!
One of the Hawk Leader program’s goals is to get the freshmen more involved in East’s activities. This past month, during Homecoming week, HL’s encouraged all of the freshmen to dive into the
spirit of the week. The freshmen were pushed to go all out during the
various spirit days such as America Day, Pajama Day and Twin Day.
Freshmen were also encouraged to enjoy themselves at the annual
Homecoming Extravaganza (an afterschool party with carnival games
and prizes), to show some OE pride by supporting the football team
by going to the game, and, of course, to dance it out at Homecoming.
Coming up in October, we have more fun in the books for
Hawk Leaders! Hawk Leaders will be hosting a Halloween-themed
Freshman Mixer here at OE on October 24. The mixer will directly
follow the football game against Olathe Northwest. The game will be a
“Halloween-Out”, so make sure to be decked out in your best costume
for a costume contest at the Mixer, and get ready to have a great time!

AWESOME HAWK AWARD
Bountiful Bowls!
The Awesome Hawk award will be given out 12
times a semester. Each student is chosen by his/
her teachers based on their demonstration of the
following characteristics: respect for property and
others, kindness to others, a positive attitude toward school, cooperation in working with others
Advanced and Independent Study Ceramics students
and their instructors will once again offer a wonderful selection of handmade ceramic serving bowls
at the Annual OE Bountiful Bowls Silent Auction.
Other items, such as Power Hawk mugs, may also
be available. The auction is held every year during
Parent/Teacher conferences in October.

“Ashlee always has a smile on her face, and she has
a positive approach to schoolwork. She shares with
other students, and likes coming to school. Ashlee
works hard, and she wants to improve every day.
She is a great example of an Awesome Hawk!”

“Benjamin is kind, courteous, thoughtful, caring,
and sincere! He is a true “Attitude Adjuster!” His
presence and personality around this school are contagious and everyone enjoys being around him. He
is a positive role model that we can all look up to.”
Week of September 25 – A.J. Stephens
“A. J. may be the kindest, most caring student at
Olathe East. He has been a leader in creating and
marketing t-shirts in support of the McGinnis
family during this very trying time. He has daily
gone to the hospital to check in on James and see
how the family is doing. He is a very hard worker
and does exactly what is asked of him.”
Student Achieves
a Perfect ACT Score
Proceeds from past sales, ranging from $1,000.00 to
$1,700.00, have benefitted local charities including
Ronald McDonald House, the Dream Factory, TLC
and the Mission Southside Back Snack program. For
the last two years we supported our very own OE
Hawk Pack Program and will do so again this year.
The purpose of the Hawk Pack Program is to provide
food for students who might not have anything to eat
on weekends. For many of these students (and their
families) the only meals available to them on the weekends are from these packs. Our students are proud to
support a program that offers vital assistance to students and their families in our very own community.
Come join in the bidding fun and help us to help others!
East Claims Seven
National Merit Semi-Finalists
Selina Liu, a junior at Olathe East
High School, has earned a perfect
36 ACT score. Nationally, while the
actual number of students earning
a composite score of 36 varies from
year to year, less than one-tenth of
one percent of students taking the
ACT earn a top score.
Liu is involved in debate, Spanish
National Honor Society, varsity swimming, and she is a tutor in the Olathe
East High School Writing Center.
Olathe East is proud to announce seven National Merit Semi-Finalists and one National Hispanic Scholar for 2014-2015: (L to R)

among the four district high schools. Students qualify for these
designations by taking the PSAT in the fall of their junior year
and scoring in the top one percent. The Semi-Finalists will go on
to compete for finalist status. Some colleges offer full ride scholarships to National Merit Finalists.
Drama News
Leadership Students Serve Homeless
Olathe East Theatre presents the irreverent comedy Vampire Cowboy Trilogy, October 9 through October 11 at 7:30
pm. This unique live comic book anthology contains three
cheeky comedies that amusingly skewer some well-beloved
genres. Hard-boiled paranormal detective Jake Misco takes
on the case of a mysterious stranger who is haunted by her
dead husband; a Cold War-era crime-fighting duo struggles to save America from the throes of Communism while
questioning their own principles; and a teenage warrior
princess named Tina must fight evil Zombie cheerleaders
and the tedium of French class. Reserve your seats NOW

sort donated clothing to facilitate distribution to clients
at HopeFaith Ministries. Thirty-two Olathe East Leadership I students participated in the service experience
on Tuesday, September 16.

The Hawks Nest will be celebrating 30-Onederful days of
October by selling Pink items all month long. Proceeds
from the sale of pink items will be donated to the fashion

by signing their name
on the pledge poster and
grabbing a red ribbon
plus a sucker to show
they aren’t a sucker for drugs.
• Tuesday, students will ‘Team up Against Drugs’ by
wearing their favorite sports jersey.
• Wednesday, students will show that ‘Drugs are Crazy
Bad’ by wearing crazy ties, socks, head bands, bandanas;
any accessory that does not match one another.
• Thursday, students will wear pajamas to show that
‘Drugs are a Nightmare’.
• Friday, the last day of Red Ribbon Week 2014, students
will dress in Red and this will also be our annual ‘Bring
Your Own Banana’ Ice Cream Social; after school, students
who bring a banana or pay 25 cents, can get ice cream.
Please show your support by participating in each day’s activities; and stay drug free for the rest of the year and beyond!

Hearing and vision will be tested on juniors Tuesday October 28. If you would like to volunteer to help during that day
please call the Health Room at 780-7122.
Many students use inhalers. Children’s Mercy Hospital recommends the use of spacers with inhalers. Spacers allow more of
the medication to reach the lungs instead of staying mostly in the back of the throat. Spacers also help prevent thrush in the
mouth. If you would like more information about spacers please go to:

Please remember to send your students with their own cough drops, ibuprofen, and/or Tylenol. In high school, students are
allowed to carry their own over-the-counter medications in their backpack. Medications must be in the original container
and cannot be shared with anyone else.
When there is a health issue with your student, please let us know. We like to be able to best help your student and make
this as successful a year as possible for him/her.
Immunization notices went out to those students who are missing immunizations or documentation. Please provide us
with documentation of immunizations by October 13 to avoid exclusion from school. Call our office with any questions

Grade 9 Students will choose ACT EXPLORE or practice PSAT
Grade 10 Students will choose ACT PLAN or practice PSAT
Grade 11 Students will choose practice ACT, ASVAB or PSAT
On Wednesday, October 15, the ACT EXPLORE and ACT PLAN will be administered to most of our Grade 9 and Grade 10 students. The ACT EXPLORE
and ACT PLAN provide students an opportunity to assess their potential for
success on the ACT and to complete a career interest inventory. Some grade 9
and grade 10 students are registered to take the PSAT for practice.
Grade 11 students will have the opportunity to take a practice ACT, the ASVAB or the PSAT – the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. No registration for the practice ACT is required. Students may
register for the ASVAB in the counseling office. On-line registration for the
PSAT was required in September.
Students received Testing Day information through their English classes. Your
student’s attendance and participation on October 15 is very important. Please
encourage them to get a good night’s sleep and have a healthy breakfast. If you

KC Metro College Expo

Come join us for the 3rd Annual KC
College Expo Night on Monday, October 13, at the Overland Park Convention Center from 6:00-8:00 pm. College
browsing begins at 6:00 pm. Over 150
colleges will be represented and financial aid sessions will run every hour
from 6:00-8:00 pm. Spanish presentations are available. A Planning for

Shawnee Mission College Clinic
The Shawnee Mission College Clinic
will be held on Wednesday, October 15,
6:30–8:30 pm at Shawnee Mission East
High School. Over 200 colleges and
universities will be represented including many selective universities. Parents
and students from the Olathe School
District are invited to attend. Shawnee
Mission East High School is located at
Mission Road and 75th Street.
JCCC Updates
Quick Step Plus College Algebra (QSPCA): College Algebra is a concurrent enroll-
ment course set up differently than College Now. Your high school grade is given by the
high school teacher and the JCCC grade is given by a JCCC professor. Your high school enrollment still stands separately from your JCCC enrollment. Being enrolled in a class at the
high school does not automatically enroll you in QSPCA. To earn college credit, complete
the steps as outlined in materials from JCCC.

Exploration and Planning” resource to:
• search for colleges and majors
• explore career and college options
• explore financial aid resources
• develop a career plan
Access Career Cruising from school, home, or wherever your student has access to the internet. Please ask your student to show you how to view colleges, career profiles, scholarship
and financial aid information and their electronic portfolio. For more information on Career
