FIGURES SOAR AT TATTS SESSION TWO

The second day of Book 1 took place in notable
contrast to Tuesday=s opening session in both mood
and market vibrancy.
Record turnover for a
single day at Tattersalls
was achieved when 123
yearlings sold for
28,930,000gns, an
improvement of 16%
helped in no small part
by three seven-figure
transactions. The
Lot 214, the 1.7 million guineas sale- average increased by
4% to 235,203gns,
topper by Shamardal
with the median also
Tattersalls
up, by 7%, to
150,000gns. Clearance rate was also significantly
higher than the first day and up by 16% on the
corresponding session last year at 87%.
A dozen yearlings exceeded the 500,000-guineas
mark, compared to eight last year, with the three
million-plus yearlings all being knocked down to John
Ferguson on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed. The
1.7 million guineas (US$2.867 million) sale topper is
the most expensive yearling sold in the world this year.
CIGAR (1990-2014)

Cigar (Palace Music--Solar Slew, by Seattle Slew),
whose 16-race winning streak over the course of
22 months from 1994 to 1996 tied the record of
Citation and earned him legions of fans the world over,
died Tuesday from complications from neck surgery at
Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington. He
was 24 years old.
AHe was a cool horse, he meant a tremendous
amount to me,@ an emotional jockey Jerry Bailey told
Steve Byk on At The Races. AIt wasn=t until Cigar that I
got emotionally attached to horses. He turned me into a
person from one that would leave the barn after I got
off horses in the morning to a guy that would stay at
the barn and watch him graze. He turned me into a guy

Shamardal Colt Sparks Darley/Coolmore Duel...
In a scene rarely witnessed these days in sales rings
around the world, a good old-fashioned shoot-out
between Darley and Coolmore brought about the first
millionaire of Tattersalls October Book 1 when a
near-black son of Shamardal lot 214 was hammered
down for 1.7 million guineas.
Eamonn Reilly of BBA Ireland was the first bidder to
show serious intent for the regally bred colt out of top
sprinter Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {GB}), who is
already the dam of three group winners. Her G1 Irish
1000 Guineas-winning daughter Halfway To Heaven
(Ire) (Pivotal {GB})--who won three Group 1 contests
for Aidan O=Brien--ensured Coolmore=s interest, with
John Magnier leaping into the chase at 1 million
guineas. Sheikh Mohammed, who stands Shamardal at
his Kildangan Stud in Ireland, would not be denied,
however, and, standing alongside John Ferguson, drove
the price up until the colt was his.
The final sum naturally brought a wide smile to the
face of the colt=s breeder, Trevor Stewart, who
consigned him through James Hanly=s Ballyhimikin
Stud, where Cassandra Go resides alongside her
Group 3-winning daughter Tickled Pink (Ire) (Invincible
Spirit {Ire}).
AI=m absolutely delighted, naturally,@ beamed Stewart.
AI didn=t expect anything like that, it=s a dream, an
old-fashioned battle between Coolmore and Darley. At
least I=ll be able to sleep tonight!@
Stewart, who bought Cassandra Go, a half-sister to
former Irish National Stud stallion Verglas (Ire), as a
yearling for 200,000gns in 1997, saw her carry his
colors to victory on six occasions, including in the
G2 King=s Stand S. at Royal Ascot and G2 Temple S. at
Sandown. He added, AI have retained her Pivotal
2-year-old, Allez Alaia (Ire), who is in training with
Roger Charlton. She has no foal this year, but she is in
foal to Iffraaj (GB) and her daughter Tickled Pink is in

Tattersalls this week by a considerable margin, said,
AHe=s from a very good breeder and the mare was
outstanding herself. When a top racemare can breed a
Classic winner, there=s always a chance she can do it
again. He=s a beautiful colt by a stallion who has really
set the world alight this year. Although it=s a lot of
money, it=s so hard to breed a horse as special as that-he deserved to make that price.@
Shamardal, whose young stallion sons include one of
this year's leading freshmen, Lope De Vega (Ire), is the

and this colt, out of the winning Montjeu (Ire) mare
Dazzle Dancer (Ire), was bred by Ballylinch.
AWe=re absolutely delighted,@ said Ballylinch Managing
Director John O=Connor. AWe did expect him to sell
extremely well because he=d been vetted by some of
the top groups. And he=s just such an exceptional
mover, and he=s got so much quality. He=s a homebred,
we raced his dam, and we=ve retained his sister, which
we think is a very promising filly, so we=re delighted.
Lope De Vega is off to a very, very good start, so it=s
very nice for those of us that use him to know that you
can have the very top buyers bid for them.@
Godolphin has already tasted success with Lope De
Vega courtesy of Very Special (Ire), a half-sister to last
year=s ill-fated champion juvenile filly Chriselliam (Ire)
(Iffraaj {GB}). Very Special broke her maiden by five
lengths at first asking in September and finished third in
the Oct. 4 Tattersalls Millions 2YO Fillies= Trophy.

It didn=t take Sheikh Mohammed long to add to his
haul of million-dollar babies. Lot 237 kicked off a flurry
of expensive Dubawi purchases by the Ruler of Dubai,
and put the icing on the cake of a watershed week for
the Duke of Roxburghe=s Floors Stud.
Floors Stud, which is best known as the breeder of
champion, dual Classic and five-time Group 1 winner
Attraction (GB) (Efisio
{GB}), sold its highestpriced yearling ever
when its Oasis Dream
(GB) colt out of

guineas.
The Duke of Roxburghe was nearly lost for words
moments after the transaction.
AI don=t know what to say--I=m over the moon,@ he
said. The Scotsman was quick to pay tribute to his
staff. AWhat I wanted to say yesterday is that I=m so
pleased for all the staff,

He noted that both high
Tattersalls
prices were beyond his
expectations.
AYesterday blew me away and today is the same,@ he
said. AI=d hoped he=d make 600,000gns to 700,000gns,
so he=s made double what I thought he=d make. It=s just
fantastic and unbelievably exciting.@
The Duke of Roxburghe owns about 16 mares, some
in partnership. His philosophy is to sell all the colts and
retain one or two fillies every year. The Dubawi colt
was bred in partnership with the Duke of Devonshire.
He noted that Comic (Ire) (Be My Guest), who was bred
and raced by himself in partnership, is back in foal to
Dubawi, but no decision had been made on who she
would go to next.
AWe bred the mare, so they=re all complete
homebreds; they=ve been up in Scotland the whole
time,@ he explained. A[Comic] is one of the mares we=ve
owned for a long time. She=s 19, so she=s getting on.
She=s been fantastic, she=s been a dual Group 1
producer. I don=t know how many there were in the
catalogue, but not many.@
Floors= Galileo (Ire) colt out of Flirtation (GB) (Pursuit
of Love {GB}) (lot 297)--and therefore a half-brother to
Attraction--provided the stud another reason to
celebrate late in the session when knocked down to
M V Magnier for 750,000gns. The colt sparked a
bidding war that included John Warren and Grant
Pritchard-Gordon, with John Magnier joining the fray at
650,000gns. The former parties continued to tussle,
but in the end it took one final blow from Magnier at
750,000 to end the battle. Magnier is well familiar with
the family, as the Coolmore partners race Attraction=s
Group 3-winning son Fountain of Youth (Ire) (Oasis
Dream {GB}), purchased by Demi O=Byrne for
420,000gns here two years ago.

Ferguson Hails >Vintage= Crop...
John Ferguson was back in action four lots later to
secure lot 241, a Dubawi colt out of the stakes-winning
Cosmodrome (Bahri), from the draft of Highclere Stud,
for 725,000gns. A further four lots later, Ferguson was
forced to cross the 1-million guineas threshold again for
yet another Dubawi, this time Watership Down=s colt
out of the G1 Fillies= Mile winner Crystal Music
(Nureyev) (lot 245). The transaction was a near carboncopy of Lot 237, with Ferguson forced to see off
Warren, but this time that agent pushed him even
further. Once again, Sheikh Mohammed would not be
denied, however, and after signing the ticket at 1.6
million, Ferguson discussed Darley=s buying philosophy.
AYou have to look at it across the whole spectrum of
what we invest in the course of a year,@ he said.
AAlthough it=s a huge sum of money, across the
spectrum of what we=re doing in Australia and America
and around the world, it=s all relative. We=re trying to
find the next goldmine to be a stallion that can go dual
hemisphere and can repay. That=s how it works. And so
although individually it looks like a lot--and I=m not
saying for a second it=s not--you=ve got to look at it as
one spike of investment during a year of investment.@
Ferguson said he thinks this year=s British yearling
crop is a Avintage@ one.
AI think there are some exceptionally nice yearlings
here this year,@ he said. AI think overall--and Dick
O=Gorman who helps
me here goes around to
all the farms, and with
our horses as well-whether it=s the
weather, or what it is, I
think this is a vintage
year for yearlings. I
think there is a very

he continued. AThe stallions we have in Europe now,
sure there are some lovely horses in America, and don=t
get me wrong, there are some fantastic operations in
America, but as a conglomerate of horses, Newmarket
has it.@

Down Stud manager Simon Marsh. "We're absolutely
delighted he's been bought by Sheikh Mohammed.
There's every chance the colt's full-brother could be
seen in same ring next year, as Crystal Music's current
foal is also a Dubawi colt, but the mare is not in foal
this year.@
Ferguson did not rest long, adding another Dubawi
colt, this time Meon Valley=s lot 259, for 800,000gns.
the chestnut is out of the stakes-winning Dash to the
Front (GB) (Diktat {GB}), a half-sister to stakes winner
Dash to the Top (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}).
Over the first two days of trade, Ferguson signed for
25 lots for 12,105,000gns, making him the sale=s
leading buyer by more than 7 million guineas.
Australia Again for China Horse Club?...
The China Horse Club has experienced the year of a
lifetime courtesy G1 Investec Derby, G1 Irish Derby and
G1 Juddmonte International winner Australia (GB)
(Galileo {Ire})--in which China Horse Club Chairman Teo
Ah Khing is a part owner--and the operation will hope
to relive that magic after going to 875,000gns
yesterday for another by Galileo in lot 170.
Bidding on the chestnut son of Another Storm (Gone
West) was opened at
100,000gns by Grant
Pritchard-Gordon of
Badgers Bloodstock, but
that agent bowed out at
500,000gns, leaving the
China Horse Club=s
Michael Wallace to duke

Another Storm has produced three stakes winners
from six runners, including
G3 Prix Paul Moussac winner Asperity (War Chant) and
GIII Valley View S. heroine Angel Terrace
(Ghostzapper). Her 2-year-old, Order of St George (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) was a $550,000 Keeneland September
yearling and has made a promising start to his career
for team Coolmore, having broken his maiden by
8 1/2 lengths at third asking at Leopardstown in
August.
AHe=s by a champion sire and the mare has done a
fantastic job already,@ Wallace noted, adding, AHe=ll stay
in Europe, but we haven=t decided on a trainer yet. I=m
sure we won=t have much trouble finding one.@
The Galileo colt was the China Horse Club=s second
transaction of the sale after they picked up an
Acclamation (GB) filly for 300,000 during Tuesday=s
opening session. These youngsters are added to a haul
picked up at European sales in the last seven weeks.
After going to i560,000 for a Galileo filly at Arqana
August, the China Horse Club picked up three at Goffs
Orby last week for i1.13 million, and was also busy at
Arqana=s Arc sale over the weekend, buying five horses
in training--including the top three lots of the boutique
sale--for i2.67 million.
The China Horse Club has horses in training in nine
countries--including the U.S. with Christophe Clement-but Wallace noted that Britain isn=t one of them just
yet.
A few minutes later Wallace returned to the action,
securing a Street Cry (Ire) filly out of the Group 3placed Arkadina (Ire) (Danehill) (lot 178) for
200,000gns.
Quick Double...
As the sun broke through early in the afternoon at
Tattersalls, the ring also lit up accordingly with a
quick-fire double of stellar prices for lots 203 and 204,
which sold for 680,000gns and 650,000gns,
respectively.
The former, an Invincible Spirit (Ire) half-brother to
G3 Prix La Force winner
Baraan (Fr) (Dalakhani
{Ire}), was the subject of
a contest between Sheikh
Mohammed=s bloodstock
advisor John Ferguson
and John Warren, each
concealed behind
partitions on either side
of the chute. As bidding

left the ring, leaving Warren to sign the docket.
Out of the Grindstone mare Brusca, a three-time
winning half-sister to GI Diana S. victrix Somali
Lemonade (Lemon Drop Kid), the February-born colt
was consigned by James Egan=s Corduff Stud and was
a bold pinhook, having been bought as a foal at
Tattersalls last December for 215,000gns.
Warren ended day two as the sale=s second leading
buyer behind Ferguson, with 23 to his credit for
5,085,000.
Following the Invincible Spirit colt was a son of Sea
The Stars, consigned by Tom Whelan=s Church View
Stud for his breeder John Connaughton of Mullingar.
Out of By Request (GB), a Giant=s Causeway half-sister
to G1 Irish Derby runner-up Midas Touch (GB) (Galileo
{Ire}) and a great grand-daughter of outstanding matron
Alruccaba (GB), the colt=s sale to Charlie GordonWatson--standing alongside agent Jamie McCalmont
and American owner Jon Kelly--at 650,000gns brought
tears to the eyes of Whelan, whose son Ronan is an
apprentice jockey for Jim Bolger.
AHe was just a special horse,@ said Whelan in
between hugs and back-slaps from well-wishers. AI=ve
only seen one horse before in my life who could match
him, he was special in every way. I=m in bits.@
The colt is to be trained in Newmarket by Luca
Cumani who later saw a Dubawi colt bred by his
Fittocks Stud knocked down to John Ferguson for
725,000gns. The new owner of the colt was not

Destiny Calling...
The use of Lasix and other raceday medication has
been debated in detail in these pages, but a warning
shot was fired across the bows of those in favor of the
continued use of drugs in U.S. racing by Californian Jon
Kelly, who has become a regular visitor to Park
Paddocks, both for the yearling and breeding stock
sales.
Speaking after spending 650,000gns on a Galileo (Ire)
filly out of the late George Washington=s sole produce

261), Kelly said, AI=ve been
trying hard to buy during

Mastercraftsman (Ire) has had a magnificent year
with his runners, most notably through his
Classic-winning sons Kingston Hill (GB) and The Grey
Gatsby (Ire), and another member of his family caught
the eye of Tom Goff, who bought a Galileo (Ire) colt out
of Mastercraftsman=s sister Famous (Ire) (lot 287A) for
600,000gns.
Famous was pretty gifted herself, finishing runner-up
in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. after winning her maiden at
two, and her Highclere Stud-consigned grey son--her
second foal--looks every bit the athlete.
AHe has a fantastic page we all know so well,@ said

The colt=s sale enhanced a good day for Lady Carolyn

Ervine for a mere €5,000 in foal to Fast Company (Ire) (Danehill Dancer

year, while this colt fetched 235,000gns from Blandford Bloodstock as a
TATDEF weanling two months later. Within the next couple of weeks

of Invincible Spirit’s sire Green Desert) this bay miss is closely related to

Paulson=s colt won his maiden sprinting on the dirt at
second asking while under the care of Alex Hassinger,
but added just one victory and placings in the
GIII Ascot H. and the GIII Volante H. from his next
11 starts on turf, the final four of those for trainer Bill
Mott. The Hall of Fame conditioner called an audible in
an attempt to shake things up and entered the
handsome bay in a second-level allowance going
Aqueduct=s one-turn mile Oct. 28, 1994. His eightlength victory marked the beginning of one of the

took over for the final 20 starts of Cigar=s career, and
they closed out 1994 with a seven-length success over
Devil His Due--and Mike Smith--in the GI NYRA Mile H.,
a race now named in his honor.
An allowance tally in January 1995, his third
consecutive win, set the table for a showdown with the
Smith-ridden and 1994 Horse of the Year Holy Bull in
the GI Donn H. 20 days later. No one knows what the
outcome might have been, but >the Bull= went wrong on
the backstretch, Cigar came away to a front-running
5 1/2-length victory and the torch had been passed.
AI felt given the post positions--we were inside of
Holy Bull--that we should take the race to him,@ his
jockey commented. AJust as we were turning I heard a
big pop, it was like a tree branch. I could hear Mike
Smith say >Oh no.= I thought that would be a great
rivalry.@
Cigar was boldly campaigned the balance of the year,
winning before fans in Arkansas and Maryland,
Massachusetts and in Los Angeles, before returning to
New York to take the GI Woodward S. for the first time
and the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup. In the 1995
GI Breeders= Cup Classic, Cigar was out to complete a
rare 10-for-10 season and was looking for his 12th in a
row exactly one year to the date of his Aqueduct
allowance score. Favored at 70 cents on the dollar over
a muddy and sticky track that caused his connections
all sorts of concern and forced to endure a frivolous
pre-race claim from a rival trainer, Cigar raced
prominently before being cut loose on the turn with
what track announcer Tom Durkin called >a dramatic
rush.= With a quarter mile left between him and that
perfect season, Athe unconquerable, invincible,
unbeatable@ Cigar came home a 2 1/2-length winner
and earned the first of his two Horse of the Year
statues (video).

Cup. Looking for 14 in a row, Cigar covered ground the
entire way over the triangular-shaped track, but hit the
front going apparently well at the head of the straight.
He went clear into the final furlong, but his
compatriot Soul of the Matter rolled up and looked
destined for victory. But Cigar turned him back and put
the World Cup on the map with a thrilling half-length
success (video).
AWatching it, you=d have thought Soul of the Matter
was going to run right past him, but when he came to
him, I could feel Cigar=s engine rev back up,@ Bailey
said.
For a second straight year, the team made its way to
East Boston and packed them into Suffolk Downs for
the MassCap, and they did not leave disappointed as
the champ scored by 2 1/2 lengths to make it
15 straight. Mott targeted a return trip to California for
the GI Hollywood Gold Cup, but the horse=s recurrent
foot problems put pay to that idea, and in stepped Dick
Duchossois, chairman of Arlington Park, who offered a
$750,000 base purse and $300,000 of bonus money
to the winner should the track be able to attract Cigar
for a July 13 race named the Arlington Citation
Challenge in which he would attempt to equal the
winning streak of that legend from nearly 50 years
earlier. Despite a outside draw and a brutally wide trip,
Cigar took care of business, defeating California raiders
Dramatic Gold and Eltish (video).

Returned to New York to prepare for another assault
on the Breeders= Cup, the 6-year-old returned to his
best with a four-length tally in the Woodward, but he
was upset by the upstart 3-year-old Skip Away in
defense of the Gold Cup. Cigar made his final career
appearance in the 1996 Classic at Woodbine and was
in with a chance deep into the final furlong, but he
could not quite finish the job and finished third, beaten
a neck.
He was retired with 19 wins from 33 starts and
earnings of $9,999,815, at the time a North American
record (it has since been broken by Curlin). Cont. p13

Paulson sold a 75% interest in Cigar=s breeding rights
to Coolmore, who were to stand him in Kentucky, but
he proved to be infertile, and, following a reported $25million settlement, he was turned over to the Kentucky
Horse Park to become part of their >Hall of Champions=
in 1999.
Cigar was elected to racing=s Hall of Fame in 2002.
Officials at the Horse Park explained that while still
maintaining all his mental faculties, Cigar=s physical
well-being had declined over the past several months.
ACigar had been experiencing arthritis-related health
issues over the past six months and was in outstanding
physical and mental condition other than the
osteoarthritis he was suffering from in several of his
cervical vertebrae,@ said Kathy Hopkins, director of
equine operations for the Kentucky Horse Park.
AMedical therapies had failed to relieve the pressure that
the arthritis was causing on his spine, which had
resulted in instability in his hind legs.@
With that information, the decision was made for
surgical intervention.
ACigar developed a compression of his spinal cord in
the lower part of his neck,@ said Dr. Steve Reed of Rood
and Riddle. AThe most severe compression was
between cervical vertebra 6 and 7, with additional
compression between cervical vertebra 5 and 6. This
was an acquired problem related to arthritis, and bony
remodeling in the neck. The severity of this spinal cord
compression became so problematic that all parties
were left with few options, the best one being surgery.
This was a significant surgery involving a prolonged
recovery. Unfortunately, during recovery Cigar suffered
a vertebral fracture and passed away.
Dr. Reed continued, AThe outcome was disappointing
and very sad for many people; but especially for
[Kentucky Horse Park=s] Wes [Lanter] and Kathy who
remained at his side to the end.@
Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear was among those
paying tribute to the champion Wednesday.
AThe great champion Cigar thrilled racing fans and
surely brought new ones to the sport as he compiled
win after win in his incredible streak of victories,@ he
said. AAn example of racing at its best, he continued to
serve as an ambassador, bringing joy to countless
visitors to the Hall of Champions at the Kentucky Horse
Park, where he will be missed.@
It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to a
part of our family. World-champion and 16
consecutive winner #racehorse, #Cigar, has passed
away. He was truly one-of-a-kind and he will be
greatly missed by not only our family, but so many

CIGAR, SUFFOLK DOWNS, AND MY MOM

In the summer of 1994, my mother, a non-smoker
and an inveterate racing fan, was diagnosed with lung
cancer. The early diagnoses were dire--six months from
one doctor, one year from another--but she finally made
her way to Sloan-Kettering, where she was treated by a
fellow racing fan, Dr. Vincent Miller, who advised her to
take out a lease on an apartment in Saratoga as usual,
and to not worry about signing one for the following
year, either. >We=ll think of it as a chronic disease rather
than worrying about a cure,= he told her, >and we=ll
manage it.= She started treatment. By the end of
October, we had good news. The tumors were
receding.
The morning of Nov. 26, the day of the NYRA Mile,
she woke up and told my father
that she had a dream that the
six horse had won the race.
They hadn=t planned to go to
the track, but they packed the
car, sat in Equestris, and
watched Cigar, the six horse,
gallop home the easiest of
winners. She quickly became a
fan, and her condition continued
to improve.
She enjoyed a good
Christmas, and was happy
when Cigar=s 1995 campaign
not only started early, but was a Mom and her oncologist, Dr.
Vincent Miller, at Saratoga
successful one. She watched
together
during ‘the streak’
the simulcast of his Jan. 22
allowance win at Gulfstream,
and was fully invested in his performance by the time
the Feb. 11 Donn Handicap rolled around. (I didn=t tell
her I was rooting for Holy Bull.)
Some time early on in the streak, she decided that his
success on the track and hers at the hospital were
somehow linked; his poor performances on the turf the
previous summer coincided with the onset of her
illness, and his turnaround in late October with hers.
She became convinced that as long as he continued to
do well, she would, too. Cont. p14

Knowing the intangible differences that can be made
by a positive outlook, this conclusion of hers meant
that his races were now fraught with stress for her
family.
She traveled to Pimlico to see him win the Pimlico
Special, and was stunned to hear that he would make
his next start at her >home= track, Suffolk Downs.
My mom led a small life, in both good and bad ways.
She grew up in Massachusetts during the Depression,
was forced onto Welfare at the age of eight when her
father abandoned her and her four young siblings, and
forced off Welfare at 16 (and effectively out of high
school) in an incredibly unenlightened policy at the time
so as to no longer be a drag on society. She got a job
as a cashier in a restaurant to help feed her younger
brothers, met my father when he returned from the
war, and stayed home and raised a family. She never
flew in a plane, or left North America, and the one true
love her family instilled in her was racing. They went to
Rockingham, Narragansett, Lincoln Downs, and Suffolk,
were $2 gamblers, and loved a good show parlay. To
her husband and children, of course, she was
everything.
The Mass=Cap that year fell on June 1, her birthday,
and we arranged to name a race on the card after her,
and for her to present the trophy to the winning
connections. She walked into the clubhouse, saw her
name up on the toteboard at the track she had enjoyed
for years in anonymity, and burst into tears. I=d say she
had never felt as special as she did at that moment.
The streak continued, of course, throughout the year,
and we breathed a sigh of relief when he won the
Classic and was put away for the winter. He picked up
right off where he left off the next year, and reeled off
four in a row.
When he ultimately retired to the Kentucky Horse
Park the next spring, she drove down to see him, and
until she died three years later, a picture of them
together sat on the piano in her family room.
One of the great things about a life in racing is that
your memories are somehow more vivid; as if the
intensity of the sport burns them into your
consciousness forever, so that you remember not just
where you were standing when Personal Ensign won
her 13th straight, but what the air felt like at the time;
or how you sat on the green cement wall at Santa
Anita for a good view of Shoemaker=s last ride; or what
it felt like to cross the undulating grandstand floor at
Suffolk which made it impossible to read your program
while you walked, lest you trip on a sudden rise or dip.
And so it is that I remember the exact television
monitor in the Saratoga backyard where we watched
the streak come to an end in the Pacific Classic. If my
mom took it as a bad omen, she hid it well. But inside,
we all died a little bit that day.
Suffolk Downs closed this week. Cigar passed on a
few days later. Somehow, it felt like losing my mom all
over again.
In the >small= life she led, racing was the star, and the
highlight, I daresay, the day she stood in the Suffolk
winner=s circle a few races before her hero, and felt she
was a part of his story.
She was >just= a fan, and he was >just= a horse, and
his connections will never know just how much the
streak meant to our family, and how for that one and a
half years, a horse gave hope to a dying woman, and
let her think that maybe everything would somehow,
miraculously, be alright.
I'd by lying if I said that I haven't shed more than a
few tears today.

Maragh, the co-second choice--drawn widest of all in
this nine-horse affair--was the slowest away from the
stalls and took up her preferred position at the back of
the pack. She continued to bide her time as the
headstrong Cool Comfort (Big Brown) blazed through a
first quarter in :22.41 while several lengths clear of the
field. Cool Comfort remained clear, while slowing down
a bit, to clock a half in :46.94. Still last exiting the
bend, Rainha Da Bateria came flying two wide in the
lane to inhale her rivals and secure her first black-type
victory in style. Co-second choice Quality Rocks held
on to be a clear cut second over favored Fila Primera
and Cool Comfort faded to fourth. AIt was a good trip,
perfect trip,@ winning rider Joel Rosario commented. AI
looked up front and thought they were going quick, but
she has a good turn of foot. Turning for home, she just
picked off horses, one by one. She finished good.@
Winning owner Three Chimneys Farm=s director Dr.
Stephen Jackson added, AI hope we=re going [to the
Breeders= Cup]; we plan to, anyway. She ran huge and
Graham [Motion] had her teed up and ready to go. We
always thought she was a nice filly, so hopefully we=ll
be in California in about three weeks [for the Breeders=
Cup].@ Sold for $435,000 at last year=s Keeneland
September sale, Rainha Da Bateria was the highest
priced yearling sired by Broken Vow in 2013. The
winner=s second dam Aquilegia (Alydar), a MGSW on
the turf, produced English Group 3 winner Bertolini
(Danzig), and the dam of GISW Bayern (Offlee Wild).
Amelia produced a Tapit filly in 2014.

TAIT TO LEAVE DARLEY
Following 15 years in a variety of roles, Olly Tait, the
current chief operating officer of Darley has announced
that he will be leaving the organization next month to
pursue other opportunities.
Tait=s tenure at Darley took him to all parts of the
world as Darley=s bloodstock interests expanded. He
was played a key role in establishing both the
Australian and Japanese operations and after a period
overseeing Darley=s American operation he took on his
current role at Darley=s Newmarket headquarters as
Chief Operating Officer coordinating what is now a
truly global organisation.
"The last 15 years have been challenging and exciting
and I will always value the time that I have had in such
a dynamic and ambitious environment," Tait said in a
release. "I am very grateful for the opportunities that
Sheikh Mohammed and Darley have provided me. Now
is the right time in my career for me to seek new
challenges and explore other opportunities within the
thoroughbred industry."

Foundation as their new Chief Financial Officer and
Vice President of Operations.

In Response to Fred Pope=s letter Sport or Business?
(10/8/14):

The first college football season was in 1869 and it
consisted of two teams playing two games. Since that
time Football has blossomed into a major sport and a
multi-billion dollar business. The sport of football is just
that, the enjoyment of the game whether you are a
spectator or participant. The business of football is built
upon the sport. However, it cannot exist without the
sport, but the sport can exist without the business. The
business of football has an obligation to protect the
sport of football so that both can thrive.
Since 1730, when the first Thoroughbred was
imported into the United States, Thoroughbred horse
racing gained in popularity. If I remember correctly, at
one point it was the leading spectator sport. Because of
the popularity of the sport the Thoroughbred industry
(business) enjoyed a great deal of success. The
Thoroughbred business also has an obligation to protect
the sport, but unlike other major sports, the
thoroughbred business has failed miserably. For
75 years I have watched the actions of the
Thoroughbred business greatly diminish the popularity
of the sport on which it depends.
Uniformity is the key to success in any endeavor
where rules apply. Would the NFL be popular today if
the rules differed between the different locations where
the sport was conducted?
I don't think so. Why should we expect the sport of
Thoroughbred racing to survive without a uniform set
of rules that are uniformly enforced? I believe history is
showing us that it won't. It is up to the Thoroughbred
business to police and protect the sport. However, that
business has been so divided by self interest entities
that it has painted itself into a hopeless corner. Until
these entities realize that they are not the only game in
town, our sport will continue to deteriorate in the
United States.

When the dust has settled on any important issue
facing the industry, the leaders and board members of
every major Thoroughbred industry organization should
turn to Mr. Pope and ask, "Fred; What do you think ?"
Fred is always right on the money and why he is not a
paid consultant or board member to all the "powers
that be" is beyond me.

Yearlings by Unusual Heat were in high demand,
accounting for three of the five top lots at Tuesday=s
Barretts October Sale, which posted across-the-board
gains. For the session, 163 yearlings grossed
$3,684,700, good for an average of $22,606
(+14.8%) and a median
of $15,000 (+15.3%).

Monmouth Park officials broke ground on a new
7,500-seat concert amphitheatre yesterday morning
that is set to open in 2015. They also continued
construction on a new restaurant adjacent to Bluegrass
Mini Golf that will open in the spring of next year. AThis
is a great day for Oceanport, Monmouth County and
the state of New Jersey, but it=s an even greater day
