28th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
OCTOBER 12, 2014
Dear Parishioners,
Next Sunday, October 19th, is World Mission Sunday. It is a special day set
apart throughout the Catholic Church to concentrate on the Church’s
Missionary work around the world. Mission Sunday helps us to reflect on how
the Church is still making every effort to preach the Gospel of Jesus in every
land. Mission Sunday also helps us to realize how fortunate we are to have
received the gift of our Catholic Faith and to be able to practice that Faith in
freedom. We pray for all those missionaries who take the Word of God to
people in every land.
This year we are fortunate in having Father Ed Dougherty, the outgoing Superior-General of the
Maryknoll Father and Brothers, speak at all of our Masses. Father Dougherty has spent a number of
years on the missions, himself, and is just completing a six year term as Maryknoll’s Superior-General.
We are delighted to have Father Ed with us.
The second collection next weekend will be taken up for the Church’s missionary efforts throughout the
world. On behalf of all the missionaries whom you will assist through your contributions and all those
who will hear the Christian message through the voices of those countless missionaries, we thank you
for your generosity.
Also, on Next Sunday afternoon, October 19th, the parish is hosting, without question, the grand social
event of the Fall season . . . the annual St. John Vianney Italian Festa. The hours are from 5:00 P.M. to
7:30 P.M. It will be a very relaxed evening, one filled with good food, enjoyable conversation and lots
of fun. Please keep in mind that the hor d’oeuvres are served at 5:00 P.M. and are available until about
5:45P.M. when dinner is served. So, if you want to enjoy the delicious hor d’oeuvres, you need to get
there early.
The Italian Festa is a parish event and a family event, open to everyone in the parish. From my
perspective, it’s wonderful to see so many parishioners join us for the occasion. The price of admission
is very reasonable . . . $20.00 for adults making advance reservations and $25.00 at the door. The
charge for children, 12 years old or younger is $9.00 in advance and $10.00 at the door. There’s plenty
to eat, so bring a good appetite. If you haven’t made your reservation yet, there is still room, but call
quickly since the dinner was a sellout last year.
Gil Chavez, a local caterer and a parishioner, is once again providing the hors d’oeuvres and the main
course. It is a BYOB affair with sodas and setups for those who wish them. There will also be some
wine available for those who forget to bring something that goes well with pasta and other culinary
delicacies. Come early and relax with your friends and fellow parishioners. We look forward to seeing
you there.
Have a good week ahead. God bless you all.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Msgr. Donald E. Leighton Pastor

Walking with Purpose
The Changing Landscape
for Families Considering College
Enabling Women to Know God
WALKING WITH PURPOSE is a weekly Bible study
that aims to bring women to a deeper, personal relationship with Jesus Christ by offering personal
study and small group discussion that link our everyday challenges and struggles with the solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the
Catholic Church.
St. John Vianney will be hosting a
conversation about college and college costs on Monday, October 20,
2014 from 7:00 - 8 :00 p.m. in the
Parish Hall.
While the evidence of the lifelong benefits of higher
education remains strong, perhaps more than ever,
families and students are grappling with questions of
cost and value when it comes to choosing a college.
This interactive presentation will focus on the dynamics associated with choosing a college in today's competitive and cost-conscious climate, focusing as well
on the role of Catholic colleges and universities in
delivering excellence while remaining affordable.
We meet at St. Thomas of Villanova, Rosemont
Chapel auditorium on Thursday mornings from 9:15
– 11:15 am or Thursday evenings from 7-9 pm. All
are welcome.
Free Childcare is available for the morning session.
For more information go to Walking with Purpose.com or email or call : Maria O’Malley,
[email protected] 215.740.6742
Our presentation will be led by Dennis Murphy, who
has served in leadership positions in enrollment and
student affairs at Villanova University, Bucks and
Montgomery County Community Colleges, GwyneddMercy University, Neumann University, and Rosemont College. Mr. Murphy has also shared his time
and talents with a number of schools and community
groups, including Merion Mercy Academy, Saint
Thomas of Good Counsel School, the Irish-American
Business Chamber and Network, and the Delaware
