The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
Dear Parishioners,
Last Tuesday evening, November 4, our parish hosted the annual Memorial
Mass for all the deceased parishioners and loved ones who have died over the
last year. The Church was filled with family members who came to pray and
remember those family members and friends who have passed from this life to
the next.
One of the poignant parts of the Liturgy was the Litany of Remembrance during the Prayer of the
Faithful. Following petitions for various needs, the names of the deceased were read out individually
with a pause between each name. As the name of a particular loved one was called, members of the
family got up from their pews, took a carnation from the vases in the center aisle and proceeded up the
aisle to the sanctuary where they placed their flower in a vase in front of the altar in memory of their
loved one. Several times during the reading of the names there was a pause during which our cantor
sang: “I have called you by name, I have made you my own. I am with you for all times, you are
mine.” Our Liturgy focused on our Faith which tells us that we are a Resurrection people, not a death
people.
It was obvious that the pain of loss was still present in many of those who were present for this Liturgy,
especially during the Litany of Remembrance. The tears were there on many faces as they came up the
aisle with their flower and recalled the loss of someone that they loved and someone who loved them.
We realize that only time can heal the pains of those losses which we experience. The Scripture
readings and the Litany of Remembrance are intended to lift our spirits from the darkness of death into
the light of the Kingdom where our loved ones are enjoying the love of the Lord. It’s hard for us to
imagine that those who have gone before us can be happy in their separation from those whom they
loved and left behind here on earth. However, in the “Communion of Saints” they are enjoying their
experience of the living God who fulfills all their needs and they know that someday in the future we
will all join them in the Lord.
During this month of November we do remember all of our loved ones who have gone to the Kingdom.
May the Lord comfort all those in sorrow with their Faith in eternal life. May the Lord strengthen all of
us who are still in the journey so that we might continue to walk with the assurances of our Faith in the
Risen Lord!
Eternal rest to all those who have gone before us. May they rest in Peace. Amen!
Have a good week ahead! God bless you all.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Msgr. Donald E. Leighton Pastor

Prayer of Saint Charles Borromeo
Almighty God, You have generously made known to us the
mysteries of Your Life through Jesus Christ Your Son in the
Holy Spirit. Enlighten my mind to know these mysteries
which Your Church treasures and teaches. Move my heart
to love them and my will to live in accord with them. Give
me the ability to teach the Faith to others without pride and
personal gain. Let me realize that I am simply your
instrument for bringing others to the knowledge of the
wonderful things you have done for all your creatures. Help
me to be faithful to this task that you have entrusted to me.
Amen.

from God, who dwells in the sanctuary there.

Second Reading: I Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17
St. Paul compliments his Corinthian converts by
likening them to a holy temple, built on the solid foundation of Christ alone. But he also warns them that no
other can dare replace Christ.
Gospel: John 2:13-22
Here we come to the second of John’s seven “signs”
pointing to the reality of Jesus, coming right after the
Cana miracle story. John’s version of the event differs
from that in the other three Gospels. After driving
away the money-changers and the animal sellers, Jesus
predicts the fate of another “temple.”
