Reflection
Going On Our Way … Focused
Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.
Luke 10:3 (St Luke the Evangelist)
Jesus wasn’t sending his disciples forward for slaughter; he was simply warning them that the world is a
dangerous place, and as his representatives, they were certain to meet challenges and perils. He instructed them
to travel light and not take it personally when they weren’t well received but, instead, just move on.
We would be wise to heed the same advice. It’s easy to let our egos get in the way and take everything
personally - often to our detriment. God has a mission for each of us today, just as he did for the disciples. We
need to stay focused. Traveling light requires that we don’t make idols of material things or become weighed
down by our desires. Going our way means we are called to keep forging ahead and sharing the good news.
Lambs are always safest when they keep close to the shepherd. Let us be wise among the wolves.

P&F Association
The next meeting of the Parents and Friends Association is this Tuesday 14th October. It is held in the College
Library at 7.30pm. Access is by the rear Library doors near the Chapter Hall, down the stone stairs from the
Cathedral Carpark.
A number of parents whose sons have now completed Year 12 have finished up. It would be great to see some
new parents, particularly from Years 7, 8 and 9.
Year 12 Graduation
The end of Term 3 was a wonderful celebration for our senior class of 2014. They had the chance, over
breakfast cooked by Year 11, to reminisce with each other on their time at Cathedral. They were honoured and
acknowledged by the student body at a College assembly and shared their talents by entertaining the whole
school.
The Graduation Mass attended by the whole school as well as parents and families of our graduates was a
fitting celebration where College Captain Adam Makaritis gave his final address and thanked everyone. The
final Awards and Celebration Evening function was a joyous community celebration of Year 12 boys, their
partners, parents and staff. Speakers outlined their contribution, major awards recognised individual student
achievement and over a wonderful three course meal boys relaxed and celebrated their milestones of having
completed their secondary education.
1
My thanks to everyone involved who organised the various events, in particular the Year 12 Coordinator Mr
Wallington and our Acting Assistant Principal Mr Angelo Ciaschetti.
This week our young men commence their HSC exams, which continue for four weeks. Please keep them in
your thoughts and prayers, that each young man achieves his best results.
HSC Music – Encore
Each year a select group of student performers are nominated for inclusion as examples of outstanding work.
Congratulations to Chyan Kerrigan of Year 12 who has been nominated for Encore 2015. This is a credit to
Chyan and his hard work and the efforts of our gifted Music department staff.
Sporting Achievements
A number of students have performed extremely well recently in Athletics. At the NSWCCC Carnival for
Catholic schools in the state, bronze medals we won in events by Jerald Cabillo and Thomas Meier. Silver was
won by Lachlan Cooksey of Year 7 in Shot Put and Gold by Joshua Dixon of Year 10 in Javelin.
At the NSW All School’s championships, Jordan Samrani won Silver for the 12 Years Long Jump and Joshua
Dixon once again took out the Gold for 15 Years Javelin. Joshua will now both compete in the Australian
Athletics Championships later this year, an outstanding achievement.
Academic
Term 4 sees our Year 11 students commence their HSC year. All work now counts directly to their HSC marks.
All boys need to have a comprehensive study program set down outside of school if they are to achieve their
best.
Years 5 to 10 have their yearly reports due at the end of the year so it is imperative they have started the term
focussed on achieving their best.
Uniform and Grooming
I thank the vast majority of boys who returned for Term 4 wearing their summer uniform proudly. Shirts were
tucked in, top buttons and ties done up, correct uniform was worn and haircuts and grooming presentable. This
was true for about 95% of boys.
It was however disappointing, that some students let their peers down by not being in correct uniform or having
haircuts which clearly did not comply with College policy.
Following on from the concentrated work throughout Term 3 to reinforce clear expectations, it would appear
some boys need to lift their standards. Support from the home is essential and something we expect. I thank
all those parents who did, when contacted by the College, act so quickly in support of us. There are other
schools students can choose to attend that have different expectations.
CCD Annual Mass
The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine are volunteers who teach the Catholic Faith in government schools.
Year 11 students from St Mary’s Cathedral College have been part of this program now for three years. This
year 26 boys are involved.
During the first Sunday of the holidays 10 boys were able to be present at the annual Mass to thank them for
their service. Bishop Terry Brady presided this year and thanked each boy. We had one of the largest school
representative groups present. These young men are doing an extraordinary service in support of their faith.
2
Students at the CCD Mass
Facilities
During the last two school holidays a lot of money has been spent in upgrading facilities. During the Term 2
holidays new data projectors went into all the Level 5 classrooms. During the Term 3 holidays we had all our
old metal lockers replaced with new and larger MDF lockers. The major corridors on Level 5 and 4 had new
carpet laid and the doors on Level 4 were painted.
This work is a timely reminder that we all have a responsibility for our working environment. Chewing gum
is not permitted, food and drink should always be consumed outside buildings and all of us should make the
effort to put our rubbish in the bin.
Staff News
We welcome Mr Lewis Williams to the TAS Department for the remainder of the year. He is taking the place
of Mr Laurie Abela who is on long service leave. We welcome back Ms Elizabeth Butterfield after her long
service leave in Term 3.

Matt Talbot Christmas Appeal
Each year St Mary's Cathedral College students make contributions towards the Matthew Talbot
Hostel's Christmas appeal. The goods contributed by students of the College go into Christmas
stockings distributed to men living in the Hostel and in other crisis accommodation in Sydney. In
2014 Matt Talbot have asked us to collect the goods below, which have been apportioned into year
groups.
Primary: Packets of playing cards and puzzle books
Year 7: Men's underpants and socks (various sizes)
Year 8: Toiletries (especially deodorant and shaving cream/foam)
Year 9: Inexpensive wallets, small writing pads and pens
Year 10: Caps, men's handkerchiefs
Year 11: Keyring torches, packets of lollies, environmentally friendly shopping bags
It is hoped that all students can make some contribution to the appeal in the coming weeks.

CURRICULUM CORNER
HSC Begins: Good luck to the Class of 2014:
Our prayers and best wishes go with the young men of Year 12 who commenced their HSC
examinations today with the Area of Study English Paper 1. Parents would I’m sure, have mixed
emotions as the journey over the last thirteen years of their son’s schooling comes to a close. We
wish every young man of the Class of 2014, every success and every blessing as they approach
each of their HSC examinations.
A reminder to each student to check the www.bostes.nsw.edu.au/ website prior to each
examination for dates and start times.
Examination Preparation Advice for HSC students:
The HSC is an important milestone – it is the highest educational award in secondary education
in NSW and is recognised throughout the world as an indicator of academic achievement. The
HSC opens doors to employment prospects and further education opportunities nationally and
internationally.
Read more: Surviving the HSC journey
In the exam room
Accept that it's OK to be nervous and that this can help you to excel. Some other tips are:
•read all the instructions on examination papers and writing booklets and write your answers to
questions in the appropriate places
•be aware that questions may be asked that require you to integrate your knowledge,
understanding and skills developed through studying the course
•read the questions carefully, look for key words and identify the aspect of the course to which
they relate
•be aware that the mark allocated to the question and the answer space (where this is provided
on the exam paper) are an indication of the length for your answer – writing far more than is
needed won't necessarily result in more marks, and you may run out of time to do the rest of the
exam
•be familiar with the key words in the BOSTES Glossary of Key Words but note that some HSC
questions may start with words such as 'how?', 'why?' or 'to what extent?' and use verbs that are
not included in the glossary, such as 'design', 'translate' or 'list'
•be aware that if a question contains stimulus material – such as artwork, quotations or maps –
it will be needed to answer the question, so consider it carefully
•in the case of multiple-choice questions, read ALL the alternatives first and then choose the
best possible alternative – if you change your mind, there are instructions on the multiple-choice
answer sheet about how to change your answer
6
•write your answers in black or blue pen (black is preferred) – pencil may be used where
specifically directed. If you make a mistake, cross it out, don't use liquid paper. It is in your
interest to ensure your answers are clear and easy to read
•in exams that have questions on options or electives, ONLY answer the questions that relate to
the option or elective you have studied, and
•make a serious attempt at each question.
A final word ...
This is an exciting and challenging time, but a time for which you have been preparing for since
you started school.
If I could give each HSC student one piece of advice it would be – make sure you have a thorough
knowledge of the HSC syllabus (especially the outcomes and content) and the examination
format for every course you are studying. The HSC syllabus is the foundation for all exam
content and decisions on how it is marked for everyone connected with the HSC.
The BOSTES website has many useful links as does Students Online – visit these sites regularly
and speak to your teachers if you have any questions. Your questions will help them to help you
at this important time in your education.
Whether you head to university – in Australia or overseas – to other tertiary studies, to work, or
take some time to travel, you can be assured that further education providers and employers hold
the HSC in high regard.
Year 11 Subject Changes:
A reminder that no student has permission to drop subjects until the beginning of Week 3:
commencing Monday, 20th October. This is not only a policy from the Curriculum office but it
is more importantly to ensure that each student who is considering a move from a subject into
another, does so as an informed decision. From Week 3, yellow forms for Subject Changes can
be sourced from outside the Curriculum Office or by popping into the Curriculum Office and
asking Mr Latham or myself for a copy.

Mental Health Month October 2014
October is mental health month; as such I am raising awareness about mental health issues and
encouraging students to access support. Posters have been placed around the school with this year’s
theme ‘Be YOUnique’ encouraging students to acknowledge their strengths and individuality.
Adolescence is a critical time for identity development and this can be a very confusing time resulting
in much emotional turmoil. It is often hard to maintain individuality whilst trying to fit in and be
accepted by peers. As part of good mental health it’s helpful to acknowledge and have acceptance of
what makes us ‘YOUnique’ in both strengths and weaknesses.
In raising awareness of mental health in the community this month the ABC has launched an excellent
campaign Mental As with many television and radio programs addressing issues of mental health.
These programs offer great insight into mental health, which is an issue that affects many young
people and families across the community. (http://www.abc.net.au/mentalas/.)

Youth Health: the connection between anxiety/depression and physical
health
Thursday, 30 October 2014
This FREE community information evening for school counsellors, teachers, paediatricians, parents and
carers will discuss the relationship between complaints about physical/body ailments which have no
underlying medical cause (eg. recurring stomach-aches and headaches) and anxiety and depression
problems in young people (ages 7 – 17 years).
In this informative session Associate Professor Maria Kangas will discuss:
The impact of physical (ie. somatic) health complaints on children and adolescent well-being.

Ways to identify co-occurring anxiety and/or depressive symptoms in youth who experience
recurring somatic health complaints such as headaches and stomach-aches.

Available treatment options for children and adolescents offered through the Centre for Emotional
Health Clinic, including a new program that is specifically tailored to youth experiencing co-
occurring somatic health problems with anxiety and/or depression symptoms.
The discussion will include an interactive Q&A session.
About the Presenter:
Associate Professor Maria Kangas is a clinical psychologist, researcher at the Centre for Emotional
Health, and the Director of the Masters of Clinical Psychology program in the Department of
Psychology at Macquarie University. Her research focuses on examining the symptom profile and
course of anxiety and mood disorders in individuals experiencing health problems including acute and
chronic medical conditions. She has also developed and tested psychological treatments based on
cognitive and behavioural therapy with distressed medical patients including carers. More recently
she has extended her research to investigating the treatment of somatic health complaints in
distressed youth.

ENCORE 2015 NOMINATION
The HSC Music subjects, including Music 1, Music 2 and Music Extension, comprise practical, aural
and written examination components. Every year a selection of students who have achieved
outstanding results in their HSC performance exam or for their original music compositions are
nominated to perform at ENCORE. ENCORE is an annual concert, held at Sydney Opera House.
Nominees are asked to record a video of their performance programme or composition for further
selection by the Board of Studies.
I am very excited to congratulate Chyan Kerrigan (HSC Music 1) on his prestigious nomination for
Encore 2015. We wish Chyan all the best for his BOS audition and hope to see him next year on stage
at Sydney Opera House Concert Hall!
AUSTRALIAN YOUTH ORCHESTRA RECOGNITION
Acceptance into the Australian Youth Orchestra is an acknowledgment of excellence. In 2015, under
the baton of Richard Mills, AYO partners with the Victorian Opera for a production of Richard
Wagner's earliest masterpiece, The Flying Dutchman. In July, the orchestra will tour to Melbourne
and Sydney, with a performance of Mahler's epic Third Symphony with Sir Mark Elder. The AYO
Young Symphonists program is a great starting point into this world of opportunity in orchestral
music while the AYO National Music Camp encompasses all aspects of the preparation and rehearsal
of full-scale symphonic or chamber orchestra repertoire.
It is with great pleasure that I announce that Nicholas De Bres (Year 10 – Trombone) has been
accepted as a reserve for AYO Young Symphonists. Sergio Barca (Year 9 – Trumpet) has been
accepted as a member of AYO Young Symphonists, the AYO National Music Camp and as a reserve
for AYO flagship orchestra. Congratulations to you both!
MUSIC CAPTAIN 2015
The election of student candidate for this leadership role will take place after assembly on Monday
20 October. Candidates will present a short speech to support their application to the students from
the music ensembles and Music Staff. Votes will then be cast by ballot. The successful candidate will
be announced along with the other College student leadership positions.
MEET THE MUSIC
The next Sydney Symphony Orchestra MTM concert at Sydney Opera House is Thursday 6
November, commencing at 6.30pm. The concert involves the screening of the re-mastered 1961
movie classic Westside Story, shown in hi-definition with the original vocals and dialogue intact, and
11
the full sound of Bernstein's score played live on stage by the SSO. Songs include Maria, America,
Tonight, I Feel Pretty, Somewhere and more.
West Side Story was a dream-team creation: music by Leonard Bernstein, book by Arthur Laurents,
lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, choreography by Jerome Robbins and concept by William Shakespeare.
In 1961 it was made into a movie, and went on to become the iconic winner of ten Oscars.
I will be sending information home next week about Meet the Music Concert Series 2015. All 2015
Elective Music students, Year 9 – Year 12, are invited to attend. Cost of the concert series is $100
per student.

END OF YEAR MUSIC CONCERT
On Wednesday 26 November our end of year Music Concert will be held in the College Assembly
Hall. In preparation for the concert I have planned a whole day in-school ‘Band Camp’ on Tuesday
25 November for students in the Orchestra, Senior Band, Intermediate Band and Combined Junior
Band.
Mr James Pensini will be our Guest Conductor at Band Camp
These ensembles will be involved in various workshops and musical activities throughout the day.
Our guest conductor this year is Mr James Pensini. James Pensini started learning the trumpet in Year
5 when the trumpet was the only instrument left at school band tryouts! James continued to play
trumpet throughout high school and joined the SYO family in 2000 as a member of the Peter Seymour
Orchestra. In 2003 James moved to the Sydney Conservatorium High School to further his studies.
James studied for his Bachelor of Music (Performance) degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of
Music and graduated in 2008. Whilst at the Conservatorium James had the opportunity to study
conducting under Henryk Pisarek, a former Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Sydney
Youth Orchestras.
As a trumpet player James toured in 2005 as Lead Trumpet of the Australian Youth All-Star Big Band
on their tour to the United States of America including performances at the prestigious Monterey Jazz
Festival. In 2006 James toured as Associate Principal Trumpet of the SYO Flagship Orchestra to
Spain and Portugal and in 2007 James toured as Associate Principal Trumpet with the Australian
Youth Orchestra in their 50th anniversary year tour to Europe. James has twice been part of the
Symphony Australia conducting course for music educators as well as completing courses in Wind
Band conducting with the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association and NSW DEC Arts
Unit.
James is incredibly passionate about music education and he has been engaged as a Conductor and
Tutor for many of the finest Instrumental Music Programs run for young people at a school and
representative level including many Department of Education and Communities State Music Camps.
2014 is James’ third year leading the SYO Symphonic Wind Orchestra as Conductor.
On top of SYO James is currently Head of Brass, Woodwind and Percussion/Head of Bands at St
Aloysius’ College, Milsons Point and the State and National Treasurer of the Australian Band and
Orchestra Directors Association.

More information will follow in the weeks to come about the activities and workshops. Please note all ensembles will be performing at the end of year concert and will present a selection of their recent
performance repertoire. The concert will commence promptly at 6.30pm – all welcome.
STUDIO CONCERTS
2012 saw the successful introduction of our series of Studio Concerts. Our Instrumental Staff, who
are all in demand as professional musicians, generously give their time to organise and host these
concerts at the end of the year in Chapter Hall. The Studio Concerts are friendly, celebratory events
where every student performs in a non-threatening environment to display their unique talent.
The concerts give parents an opportunity to enjoy quality music-making from their children. They
also gives teachers, parents and students an opportunity to chat over refreshments at the conclusion
of the concerts and provides time to recognise the achievements of students. With an audience of
family and friends the Studio Concerts are an exciting event for all of our students and provide a true
performance atmosphere. All welcome.

The CBSA Volleyball and Touch Football competitions commenced last week. Unfortunately
Cathedral got off to a shaky start, with only the 14’s volleyball team earning a victory. The teams
have been training hard and will look to reverse their fortunes this week in Round 2. The junior teams
will be playing Fivedock, whilst the senior teams play Marrickville. Good luck to all teams.
The New South Wales All-Schools Track and Field Championships were held last week in
Homebush. This year Cathedral were lucky enough to have three competitors in this event - Lachlan
Cooksey, Jordan Samrani and Josh Dixon.
To make it to this championship, our students have had to succeed in our school carnival, then in the
CBSA carnival, and then in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges carnival. It is a tremendous
achievement for these three students to make it to the New South Wales All-Schools Track and Field
Championships.
A special mention goes to Jordan Samrani for earning a silver medal in the Under 12’s Long Jump.
Also to Josh Dixon, who threw the javelin an amazing 51.40m on the way to earning a gold medal in
the 15 years Javelin. Josh will now progress to the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships
which will be held in December in Adelaide.
Congratulations to Lachlan, Jordan and Josh on their achievements, and we wish Josh the best of luck
in the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships.
