Seventeenth Sunday After Pentecost

Seventeenth Sunday After Pentecost
Sunday, October 5, 2014; 8:30 and 11:00 am
Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Bismarck, ND
Pastors Nadine Lehr and Larry Giese
Welcome to worship! In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus tells a parable of the
vineyard, an image of Israel, the prophets’ mission, and Christ’s death. For people
of faith, the vineyard also speaks of God’s love poured out in the blood of Christ,
given to us for the forgiveness of sin. As we are nourished today with wine and
bread, may we share in Christ’s passion and know the joy of his resurrection.
Welcome to our visitors today. Please come again!
Today’s worship service is taken from the Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW)
service book and hymnal. Please turn to Setting III, pp. 138-146, for the order of
the service and to the back of the book for the hymns.

New Members Received
We welcome you into the Lord’s family. We receive you as fellow members of
the Body of Christ, children of the same heavenly Father, and workers with
us in the kingdom of God.
First Reading: Philippians 3:4b-14
even though I, too, have reason for confidence in the flesh. If anyone else has
reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, a
member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of
Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to
righteousness under the law, blameless. Yet whatever gains I had, these I have
come to regard as loss because of Christ. More than that, I regard everything as
loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his
sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order
that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own
that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the
righteousness from God based on faith. I want to know Christ and the power of
his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his
death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have
already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it
my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider
that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind
and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on towards the goal for the prize
of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.
Children’s Message
Gospel Acclamation, “Alleluia,” p. 142
Gospel: Matthew 21:33-46
The Holy Gospel, according to St. Matthew, the 21st chapter.
Glory to you, O Lord.
‘Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a
fence around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watch-tower. Then he leased it
to tenants and went to another country. When the harvest time had come, he sent
his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his slaves
and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other slaves, more
than the first; and they treated them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to
them, saying, “They will respect my son.” But when the tenants saw the son, they
said to themselves, “This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance.”
So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. Now when the
owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?’ They said to him,
‘He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and lease the vineyard to other
tenants who will give him the produce at the harvest time.’ Jesus said to them,
‘Have you never read in the scriptures: “The stone that the builders rejected has
become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes”?
Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given
to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom. The one who falls on this
stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.’ When
the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they realized that he was
speaking about them. They wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowds,
because they regarded him as a prophet. Praise to you, O Christ.

We should give to heal, feed, and encourage those less fortunate
than ourselves. Our giving allows the mission of the church to
be accomplished.
Matthew 25:31-46
Matthew 4:18-23
Stewardship involves the giving of our Time, our Talents, and our Treasure. We pray you
will take the time to read the bible verse (s) above and discuss them with your family. As
you Know more about Gods desire for us to be good stewards, we hope you will Grow in
your faith and be better prepared to Go into the world as one of his disciples.
The Stewardship Team
Adult Education: Today's session on discovering our Lutheran cultural roots will
center on our Scandinavian heritage. Lord of Life member Helen Swenson will
lead the discussion. Helen's father was born in Norway. She grew up in a heavily
Scandinavian region and continues an active involvement in both Norwegian and
Swedish cultural traditions. Scandinavians make up a large portion of this
northern region of the US. Lord of Life participates today in part of that tradition
with the annual lefse making and sales. The class format is open discussion as we
continue to identify those cultural factors that make up Lord of Life and
Lutheranism as we know it today.
Thank you to all volunteers for serving “The Banquet” last Thursday evening.
The next Baptismal class will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 9:30
am for baptisms planned for September or October. Please sign up at the info
desk.
Adult Education, October 19 & 26. With eight different measures on the ballot
in this November’s General Election, voters will have a lot to think about as them
make their choices. To help sift through the clutter, Lord of Life will be presenting
two adult forums explaining what each of the measures would do. The forums
will be held between services on Oct. 19 and 26, and will be presented by Marsha
and Claus Lembke of Bismarck. Marsha is president of the League of Women
Voters of Bismarck-Mandan, which has prepared a voters’ guide describing the
measures. She also serves as assistant sergeant-at-arms for the North Dakota
Senate. Her husband, Claus, is a lobbyist who is chairman of District 7
Republicans. He previously served on the Burleigh County Commission and the
State Board of Higher Education. The forums are designed to provide information
about the measures rather than to debate the merits of them. Larry Klundt and
Lee Kaldor, both members of Lord of Life and former members of Legislative
assemblies, have consented to be available for the discussions
The East Missouri Cluster Fall Gathering for Women of the ELCA is at
Trinity Lutheran Church on October 11th at 9:30 am – 3:00 pm. If you are
interested in attending please contact Janell Quinlan at 224-8244 by October 2nd.
The Book Review team for the newsletter has been formed but we still have a
few open slots. If you are an avid reader and would like to do a review please
contact Eichelle the Office Manager at [email protected]. Each team
member will to commit to doing between 1- 3 reviews each year.
We are looking to start a social media team. This team would help manage Lord
of Life’s online foot print. Members will help to create a social media strategy
and implement said strategy. If this is something you think you might be
interested in being involved with please contact Eichelle the Office Manager at
[email protected]

Let’s walk together, with our sisters and brothers in Christ, because they walk.
Let’s raise money and awareness to provide food and water for those who need it
