President’s Corner
Dave Bushey
Did you fly south for Fall
Migration? Many, many of
our members did, as
evidenced by the HUGE
turnout at the NVSC Party
at Fat Harold’s. It was
especially
wonderful
visiting with all of the
members
and
former
members who no longer
live in Northern Virginia
and came to the Party.
Yes,
it
rained,
but
FunSunday
and
FunMonday turned out
spectacularly. Ken Akin,
Chairman
of
The
Association of Carolina
Shag Clubs said that it
was
the
largest
FunMonday turnout that
he had ever seen.
So, if you missed the ten
glorious days, plan on
next fall right now! And
don’t forget Spring Safari
and
Mid-Winters,
too.
Those Shaggers!
They
sure know how to party!
It’s now the fall season.
Lots of things happen
around NVSC in the fall.
First, some housekeeping.
During the next couple of
weeks,
you
will
be
contacted by someone on
the
Nominations
and
Elections
Committee.
They are tasked with
finding qualified people
who are interested in
serving as officers and
directors of NVSC in
2015.
If
you
are
interested or if you know
of someone who would be
a great director, let the
caller
know!
The
Nominations will be on
October 15th (pushed a
week);
Campaign
Speeches will be on
October
22nd;
and,
Elections will be held on
November 12th.
In the midst of Election
season, NVSC will hold its
16th Annual Charity Shag
-a-Thon. This year, we
will turn our Shag-a-Thon
into a full-blown party at
The Herndon Community
Center
on
Saturday,
October 25th from 7 PM
until 11PM.
Our very
by Dave Bushey
special DJ will be Rodney
Still, from Aiken, SC.
Admission is $20 per
person, and most people
will bring an hors d’oevre,
a salad, or a dessert. It’s
a BYOB event, too! In
addition
to
the
Admissions Fee (to cover
facility
&
DJ
costs),
people will be asked to
make a pledge to Capital
Caring,
the
premier
hospice organization in
the metropolitan area.
NVSC has raised almost
$250,000
for
Capital
Caring.
They recently
opened the Adler Center,
in Aldie, Virginia. NVSC
was engraved in stone on
Capital Caring Wall of
Fame because of our
efforts. Way to go NVSC!

Carolina Shag Comes to the Eastern Shore!
By John Romito
When Robbi & Gary Mann
moved to Salisbury, MD, to be
near family, shag dancing was
not to be found on the
Eastern Shore (Ocean City,
Rehoboth Beach, etc.).
So
they decided to try and get
the locals interested in the
Carolina Shag and began
giving lessons.
They now
have a dedicated group of
individuals that enjoy learning
and doing the shag who meet
twice a week for lessons and
dancing.
The Mann’s were
members of the NVSC dance
committee for many years
and taught hundreds of our
members to perform the
shag. Their love of shag and
expertise for teaching has
shown up in the skills of their
new students.
Most have
progressed to steps that are
taught in NVSC’s intermediate
level, e.g., the pivot and
sugarfoot.
They currently
have
approximately
20
students, but are trying to
recruit more dancers to join
their group. Here are some
photos of the Mann’s and their
students in action!

NVSC this past

Our dancers noticed that we
had
a
guest
DJ
last
Wednesday and several of us
newcomers wondered who he
was, so I asked Dave Bushey
our NVSC president. He said
it was Greg Birmingham, one
of our more long-standing
NVSC members.
And that
back in 2007 or so, Greg and
Lori, and their friends, the
Strobels would drive down
from Ellicott City to shag
dance with us almost every
week (they were referred to
as the “Baltimore Four).”
Greg even decided to become
a NVSC disc jockey and tried
his
luck
in
the
box.
Unfortunately, it didn’t last
long.
Greg was diagnosed
with
amyotrophic
lateral
sclerosis, better known as Lou
Gehrig’s
disease.

Our annual Shag-athon dance is very

maintain NVSC’s

We believe this is a
very beneficial

do, personally.

Humor
A touching story . . .
Subject: An Irishman's First Drink With His Son
I was reading an article last night about fathers and sons, and memories came flooding back of
the time I took my son out for his first drink.
Off we went to our local bar, which is only two blocks from the house.
Send your opinions,
favorite recipes and
humor to the Shag
Rag editor, Jim
Scanlon,
jamesscanlon@me.
com
I got him a Miller Genuine. He didn't like it – so I drank it.
Then I got him an Old Style, he didn't like it either, so I drank it.
It was the same with the Coors and the Bud.
By the time we got down to the Irish whiskey, I could hardly push the stroller back home.
Recipe
(from Nick)
Bucatini all’Amatriciana
(4 servings)
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
½ pound guanciale or pancetta, trim
and cut into1/4 inch cubes
2 table spoons of white wine
1 ½ tablespoon of white wine vinegar
One 14.5-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes with
their juices, crushed
Salt and fresh ground pepper
10 ounces of bucatini pasta
Freshly grated Pecorino Romano cheese
In a large deep skillet heat the oil. Add the onions and cook over moderate heat until very soft, 67 minutes. Add the guanciale or pancetta, and cook until translucent, 3 -4 minutes. Add the
vinegar, wine, tomatoes, and 2 tablespoons of water and simmer for 30 minutes. Season with salt
and pepper.
In a pot of boiling water, cook the bucatini until al-dente. Drain the pasta but save 2 tablespoons
of cooking water. Add the pasta to the sauce along with the reserve cooking water and cover over
moderate heat, stirring for 1 minute. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in 3 tablespoons of
cheese. Serve right away passing more cheese at the table..
