Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church 620 Fifth St. Aurora, Illinois 620 Fifth St. Aurora, Illinois www.ourladyofgoodcounsel.net O MISSION STATEMENT ur Lady of Good Counsel Church in Aurora, Illinois, is a diverse and unified community of Christ’s disciples living our CatholicChristian faith through worship, fellowship and service bringing God’s transforming love to our parish and our world. “The Year of Grace” Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish • 2 In our first reading, we hear the Lord's words to Cyrus about God's plan for Israel. Notice that God is in charge: telling Cyrus what God will do, making other kings run from him, opening doors or gates that might have blocked Cyrus' armies--all for a king who doesn't even know God. Cyrus only knew the Persian gods. That is why the reading says several times that there is no God but the LORD. One thing this tells us is that God can work through anyone, not just saints and religious. Any time someone does a good deed, God is behind it. Just as God used Cyrus to free the Israelites from their Babylonian captivity, God can use governments to protect the poor, to help rebuild after disasters, to defend freedom. In that sense, we can understand what Jesus says about payment to Caesar and to God. Since everything belongs to God, that should be our first allegiance. When a government does not protect the weakest or the rights of the poor, it should be accountable. But when God works through governments, we can give some support to them by such activities as voting, or paying taxes. Let us ask God to work through us also, helping us to proclaim that God alone is LORD. GOD'S WORD TODAY "Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." These words, uttered by Jesus in today's Gospel, issue a challenge. What does it mean to "give back to God what is God's"? One pastor often reminds parishioners that when we enter this life we do so completely naked and when we leave this life we will take nothing that we have amassed with us; we leave this life in a naked condition as well. This pastor had caught on to an important aspect of the Christian life. Everything we have on this earth is a gift from God. We are responsible for using these gifts wisely. The wise steward is certain to provide life's necessities for oneself and one's family and provide for the future. At the same time wise stewards are aware of the fact that too many go hungry and homeless. The wise steward gives back to God by providing for these poor ones. Let today's readings inspire us to live lives of good stewardship. Happy Birthday to Fr. Ricardo & Deacon Ray Feliz Cumpleaños al Padre Ricardo y al Diacono Ray That God will bless you on your special day and every day ahead. Stewardship Reflection “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” - Matthew 22:21 Everything we are and everything we have belongs to God. We aren’t “owners” of anything, we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given each of us. All God is asking is that we give back a portion of what He gave us. This is the essence of Stewardship. God should be our first priority in everything. All else comes second. OLGC RESOURCE CENTER The Incorruptible A Study of the Incorruption of the Bodies of Various Catholic Saints and Beati This book, written by Joan Carroll Cruz, is the acknowledged classic on the bodies of Saints that did not undergo decomposition after death, many remaining fresh and flexible for years, or even centuries. The author shows that incorruption constitutes a phenomenon which is unexplained by modern science. The author presents 102 Saints, Beati and Venerables, summarizing their lives, the discovery of their incorruption and investigations by the Church and medical authorities. These bodies are a consoling sign of Christ's victory over death. This newly added book may be borrowed from the lending library which is open two weekends a month. Keith Romke Never Settle It has been said that if a priest is a saint, that his people will be holy. In turn, if a priest is Holy, then his people will be good. Likewise, if a priest is good, that his people will be mediocre. Finally, that is a priest is merely mediocre, that his people will be lost. This of course is a broad, overgeneralization, but the nugget of wisdom behind it can teach us something very important. The bottom line is that no matter where you are called, and no matter what line of work God asks for you to do, that the best way to make a difference in the lives of others, is in fact to make a difference in one’s own life! It is not enough to simply do what one is asked to do. We must always seek to improve who we are, in particular in the area of developing our relationship with God, because it is in improving who we are that we will be able to rub off on others to greater effect. The most disastrous thing that we can do in life is to view our work, the things that are expected of us, or our callings, as checklists of things to get done. Oftentimes it is very possible to get the work done, but without a zeal or fervor that will yield good fruit. We have been created to be saints, and not mediocre laborers. So today, let us each ask ourselves what we need to do, or what we need to cease doing, so that we can take the steps to a greater goodness, holiness, and saintliness!
