Newsletter October 2014 Dear Triumph Travel Club Members, Whoever said “time flies when you’re having fun” was certainly correct. We had the best time this summer. The mystery trip was an exceptional 3 days visiting our neighbors to the west in Cedar Falls and Waterloo, Iowa. They welcomed us with food, fun, and, of course, mystery. We traveled to Happy Barn for lunch and laughing yoga, which was a hoot. We “got to” laughing so hard that we couldn’t stop. Next, we visited the John Deere Tractor Assembly Plant, the Sullivan Brothers/Iowa Veterans Museum, and the Grout Museum. We drove to Heritage Farm where the family waited with a grand surprise of a horsedrawn wagon ride in the woods. At the end of our ride was a cabin with a homemade dinner which included roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, rolls, and pie. The wonderful, old-time songs and musical arrangement played by Marie, age 92 years young, and story telling topped the evening. Marie was also the one who made all the pies and rolls. What a lady! Another place we visited for dinner that was very unusual was Galleria de Paco in Waterloo. Paco has been on the Rachel Ray Show, and has had his story told in the New York Post, Chicago Tribune, ABC News, and Los Angles Times. His family owns the restaurant, Galleria de Paco, in which the Sistine Chapel is depicted in Paco spray paint. The restaurant is covered from floor to ceiling in Paco’s view of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. It’s truly amazing. We stopped to visit 64 year old farmer, Kenny Kass, with a HUGE collection of antique tractors. The collection is housed in five gigantic barns that are filled to the brim. He has collected and restored these tractors since he was 12 years old. Our last stop was the “Field of Dreams” movie site in Dyersville, Iowa. The best part about visiting this unique ball diamond was meeting one of the actors in the movie, Frank Dardis, and a veteran that recently returned from Afghanistan. This young veteran is a baseball enthusiast and had been asked to throw the first pitch for the Cubs home game on Sunday, August 24th. It was a great trip; filled with fun and education. A short note about the Canadian Rockies; if you haven’t had the chance to visit this spectacular place, please put it on your “bucket list.” It’s a must see adventure you will never forget. You’ll see some pictures on the next page of some of our travelers and special sites. In case you haven’t heard, Triumph Travel Club will celebrate its fifth anniversary in December. In honor of our fifth year, Travel Club members will be rewarded with cash. Sounds too good to be true, right? This is what you need to do: refer a friend to our club and you will receive $25.00 in a deposit account. Along with the $25.00, your name will be placed in a drawing for a chance to win $155.55. The drawing will be held at our Anniversary Celebration on Thursday, December 11th. You could be one of four winners. Pretty exciting, huh? That’s not all. You will also receive a 1/4 percent “bump up” rate on a certificate of deposit. This “bump up” rate is for new deposit money only. Plus, your friend will receive the “bump up” rate for becoming a member. How great is that? Please invite your friends to join Triumph Travel Club. We are unique, friendly, and love to have fun. Refund Policy on Day Trip/Scheduled Events: If you cancel a day trip or event (this includes Triumph Travel Club Breakfasts) after the date of final payment and if we/you can find a person to take your place we will provide you with a full refund. In the event we don’t have a wait list or you can’t find anyone to take your place, you will not receive any refund. I try to work with the vendors in these cases, but sometimes it’s impossible once the money has left my hands. I hope this helps to clear up any questions about refunds on day trips or scheduled events. I was born and raised in Chicago. I lived on Erie Street and Damen Avenue. I was attending Wells High School when my parents bought their first home behind the Olson Rug Company near Pulaski and Diversy. At the time of the move, I was a junior and was reluctant to change schools (Sandy was also at Wells which may have had something to do with my reluctance to transfer school.) So I commuted to Wells by bus for my last two years of high school and I worked part time as a licensed pharmacist apprentice. After graduation, my parents could not afford to send me to college so I learned how to operate IBM equipment and went to work in the data processing department for Hotpoint and a year later Union Tank Car Co. I began college on a part time basis at the city junior college. September 1, 1962, Sandra Jean Gould and I were married. Going to college part time was taking too long. So I sent Sandy off to work at Ma Bell and with a little help from her parents I enrolled as a full time student at Roosevelt University where I earned a BS in Chemistry. I went to work for CPC International as an analytical chemist. In 1972 we bought our home in Schaumburg where we lived for the next 35 years. I enjoyed gardening and earned my master gardener certificate from the U of I. Two years later, a position opened up for a flavor chemist with Quaker Oats and I applied. That position was filled internally, but the Director of Quality Control felt I was a good fit for his area and offered me a position in corporate quality assurance. The next career move was to a nut house. It was a division of Borden Foods and I was the Quality Control Plant Manager. Borden decided to sell that division and the new owner offered me a position as Director of Purchasing and I accepted. After several years, the owner moved the company to Georgia and I did not want to relocate and so became unemployed. I had a friend that had his own insurance agency. He urged me to get my license. I kept telling him I didn’t like insurance salesmen and wouldn’t become one. He kept urging me and after several months of unemployment I gave in and took the insurance license exam. Looking back, it was the best move I ever made. I vowed not to be the stereotypical insurance agent and the rest is history. I must mention that along the way Sandy and I had two lovely daughters. And we now have four grandchildren. Sandy retired seven years ago, but she hasn’t approved my retirement yet! Just kidding, I love what I am doing and find it hard to stop. Please enjoy Rich Armatys’ story. He has had an interesting life. Mary K. Climate change–two simple words that can stir emotions and spark heated debates. The 2006 documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, helped mold popular opinion on this controversial topic. But is this “truth” true? Rebuttal documentaries such as An Inconvenient Truth or Convenient Fiction? haven’t received the media attention and awards of the Al Gore film, but they also have an important voice in the climate change debate.
