ENGLISH FOR PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS
TRAINING OBJECTIVES
This course aims at delivering different types of English language related techniques necessary for
candidates to attempt professional assessment required by HKIE and other member institutions of the
Engineering Council. Moreover, the course is also beneficial to those who have got the membership
already but want to continue to improve their English competence. The course focuses on three areas of
English applications, namely writing, listening and speaking, all demanded by professional assessment of
professional engineering institutions.
TRAINING SCHEDULE
This course consists of 15 contact hours, conducted in 5 evenings and each lesson lasts for 3 hours.

Quick review on writing, listening and speaking.

Writing reports: accident reports, experiment reports, memos,
fund proposals, position papers and progress reports etc.
•
Filling in application forms of professional membership.
•
Writing the 1,600 word essay required by HKIE. How to
select and change topics? How to seek clarification?

Week 3, Friday - Submission deadline of the 1,600 word essay in PDF format. Full members of HKIE or
Chartered Engineers with reciprocal recognition could be waived from this coursework assignment.

RECOGNITION OF PARTICIPATION
Participants having completed the course will be awarded a Certification of Completion by AIBE for 15
hours.
COURSE FEE (NON-REFUNDABLE)
HK$2,800 for non-organizers.
HK$2,520 for SOEHK member, AIBE students and alumni; or application of non-members in group of 4 or more.

EDUCATORS
Course Consultant:
Ir Dr Albert T.P. So, Director of AIBE, has been with the EMSD, City University of Hong Kong
and Johnson Controls (Asia). Now, he is also the Honorary Associate Professor of The
University of Hong Kong and Honorary Visiting Professor of University of Northampton.
He is a CEng and RPE, a fellow of CIBSE, IMechE and SOE, a senior member of IEEE and a
member of IET, ASHRAE, HKIE and BSOMES. He developed the Diploma of Facility
Management and Certificate of Facility Management for SCOPE, City University of Hong Kong
and is now the programme leader of the two programmes.
Course Instructors:
Ir Chun-Sing Kum has been working in Towngas for more than 10 years. He got his bachelor
and master degree in the University of Hong Kong. Ir Kum gave engineering lectures such as
Quality and Management, Mathematics and Engineers in Society courses in Vocational
Training Council in 2010.
He is a CEng, member of HKIE, IGEM and Engineers Without Borders (HK). He also attained
the merit of HKIE Young Engineer of the Year Award in 2011.
Ir Ken, Wai-Chung Luk is a CEng, CEnv and RPE, a fellow of AIIB, CABE, SOE & IPlantE
and membership of BSOMES & HKIE. He has been working in Facilities Managment field in
Jones Lang LaSalle for years. He attained an assessor qualification for Chartered Engineer
on Professional Review Interview from SOE (Hong Kong Region).
In addition, he was an assessor (for Property Management Industry) for Recognition of Prior
Learning Unit, Vocational Training Council and he was also invited to sit in the Professional
Review Panel of Hong Kong Green Building Council – Green Building Product Labelling
Scheme. Ir Ken Luk developed REW Grade A theory and engineering training programmes in
various association during past six years.
