Credit Unions: A Cause for Celebration
This year, International
Credit Union Day
occurs on October 16.
It has been celebrated
on the third Thursday
of October since 1948.
Q:
How do you celebrate
International
Credit Union Day?
A:
By enjoying the
benefits of being a
member of CCU and
by encouraging your
friends to join, too!
I believe passionately that
credit unions are a reason
to celebrate, and I’d like to
take a few moments to remind you of how
your credit union is structured, what CCU
can offer you as your credit union, and why you would want to
take advantage of what your credit union offers.
You know you are a “member” of CCU, but you may not
know exactly what “membership” means with regard to
the way the credit union operates.
CCU is a financial cooperative, owned by its members. We
strive to promote self-help, thrift, and volunteerism.
CCU is a unique community asset that facilitates a
virtuous, sustainable cycle of local development. The
deposits you make with CCU fund loans to people and
businesses in this community. The proceeds from the loans are
used to purchase many local goods and services, which in turn
provides local jobs. As a CCU depositor, you not only get an
above-average return on your money, you have the satisfaction
of knowing that you are helping to improve your community.
This is where you come in. I am going to
ask you to ponder something for a
moment: Where do you want the profit from
the financial services you use to go? Wouldn’t
you like it to come back to you and your
community? That is exactly what happens
when you save and borrow with CCU.
Your participation in this credit union is
welcomed no matter what the dollar
amount of your deposits or loans may be.
The important thing is to participate. The more
our members use CCU for the deposit and credit products they
need, the more value we can generate by lowering the interest
charged for loans, raising the interest paid on deposits, adding
new services, offering more free services, and providing financial
education to the community. All the members benefit from strong
participation, even if they do not need all the products.
Credit unions are a worldwide movement that fights poverty
and usury, and strives to improve the lives of people everywhere.
In the United States, over 100 million people have discovered
that their local credit union is their best source for financial
services.
I feel personally that having the privilege of being part of the
credit union movement gives me a reason to celebrate every
day. I encourage you to celebrate your membership and
bring more of your financial business to CCU so that we can
return more value to you and your community.
We don’t create private wealth for a few stockholders. Our
goal is to create a cycle of value for our members and our
community.
