Holy and Glorious Greatmartyr Demetrius
the Myrrhgusher of Thessalonica
Tropar in the 4th Tone (St. Gregory of Nyssa)
In truth you were revealed to your flock as a ruler of faith, an image of humility and a teacher
of abstinence; your humility exalted you; your poverty enriched you. Hierarch Father Gregory,
entreat Christ our God that our souls may be saved.
Tropar in the 2nd Tone (Prophet Joel)
We celebrate the memory of Your Prophet Joel, O Lord; through him we beseech You: “Save
our souls!”
Kondak in the 2nd Tone (Resurrection)
Hell became afraid, O almighty Savior, seeing the miracle of Your Resurrection from the
tomb! The dead arose! Creation, with Adam, beheld this and rejoiced with You! And the
world, O my Savior, praises You forever.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
Kondak in the 4th Tone (Martyr Varus)
Following Christ, O Martyr Varus, you drank of His chalice; you received the crown of
martyrdom and now rejoice with the Angels. Pray for our souls unceasingly!
Now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Steadfast Protectress
Steadfast Protectress of Christians, constant advocate before the Creator; do not despise the
prayers of sinners, but in your goodness help those who call on you in faith. Hasten to hear our
petition and intercede for us, O Theotokos, for you always protect those who honor you!
Prokeimenon in the 2nd Tone
The Lord is my strength and my song. He has become my salvation.
v. The Lord has chastened me sorely, but he has not given me over to death.
The Reading from the 2nd Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians
Brethren, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is blessed forever, knows that I am
not lying. In Damascus the governor, under Aretas the king, was guarding the city of the
Damascenes with a garrison, desiring to arrest me; but I was let down in a basket through a
window in the wall, and escaped from his hands. It is doubtless not profitable for
me to boast. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord: I know a man in Christ who
fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not
know, God knows—such a one was caught up to the third heaven. And I know such a man—
whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows—how he was caught up
into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. Of such
a one will I boast; yet of myself I will not boast, except in my infirmities. For though I might
desire to boast, I will not be a fool; for I will speak the truth. But I refrain, lest anyone should
think of me above what he sees me to be or hears from me. And lest I should be exalted
above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a
messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing I
pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My
grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most
gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Alleluia in the 2nd Tone
v. The Lord answer you in the day of trouble! The name of the God of Jacob protect you!
v. Save the king, O Lord, and hear us on the day we call!
The Gospel According to St. Luke
The Lord said, “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the
wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it. Some fell on rock;
and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture. And some fell
among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. But others fell on good ground,
sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold." When He had said these things He cried, “He
who has ears to hear, let him hear!” Then His disciples asked Him, saying, “What does this
parable mean?” And He said, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the
kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that ‘Seeing they may not see, and
hearing they may not understand.’ Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word
out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. But the ones on the rock are those
who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a
while and in time of temptation fall way. Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who,
when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and
bring no fruit to maturity. But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having
heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience."

Feasts and Saints
The Prophet Joel
The Prophet Joel (800 B.C.) predicted the desolation of Jerusalem. He also prophesied
that the Holy Spirit would be poured out upon all people, through the Savior of the world (Joel
2:28-32).
The hymnographer Anatolius links Joel’s prophecy to the Nativity of the Lord. In the
Praises at Matins on the Sunday following the Nativity, he refers to Joel 2:30, saying that the
blood refers to the Incarnation, the fire to the Divinity, and the pillars of smoke to the Holy
Spirit.

who may have a need for this, please share the information.
Martyr Varus lived in Egypt during the period of several persecutions against
Christians (late third to early fourth century). Varus was a military commander and
secretly a Christian. He gave assistance to many of the persecuted and imprisoned
Christians, and he visited the prisoners at night. He also brought food to the prisoners,
dressed their wounds, and gave them encouragement.
Once Varus spent a whole night talking with seven imprisoned monks. These
men were Christian teachers who had been beaten and starved. Varus marched with the
teachers when they were led to their execution. The judge, seeing Varus’ strong faith,
had him fiercely beaten. Varus died during the beating. After his death, the monks
were beheaded.
Quotes from the Fathers and other sources….
“The Church, through the temple and Divine services, acts upon the
entire man, educates him wholly; acts upon his sight, hearing,
smelling, feeling, taste, imagination, mind, and will, by the splendor
of the icons and of the whole temple, by the ringing of bells, by the
singing of the choir, by the fragrance of the incense, the kissing of
the Gospel, of the cross and the holy icons, by the prosphoras, the
singing, and sweet sound of the reading of the Scriptures.”

Unique Pumpkins!
Last year, you may recall I shared the story of the person who has beeswax candles
along with their candy, and invites trick or treaters to light a candle, talking to them
about All Souls. This year, I had passed on to me some very unique Jack o’
Lanterns, many of them done by OCF chapters. Thought they might be of interest to
some of you! Fr. M
Parish News and Notes
The Scholarship Committee would like to thank everyone who attended our spaghetti
dinner last Sunday. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to add $700 to our fund. Our
student population has increased, and we know we will need a lot more money to award
scholarships to our deserving students. A special thanks goes to Fr. Matthew for making the
delicious sauce and to his assistant chefs: Betty Vincent, Diane Tupps, Miriam Kankia and
Cathy Vrugitz. Thank you also to those who baked, served and cleaned up! It is indeed a
blessing to be part of this parish!
Baklava Layering Day On Saturday, October 25th at 9 AM, we will begin the process of
making trays of baklava for the Bake Sale. This is a labor-intensive project. We have
already lined up a number of layerers, but if there is anyone out there who would like to join
us, please see Elaine Rentel today, or contact her via email ([email protected]). We
usually make around 40 trays, which are then frozen for later baking. The process takes
around 4 hours. College students: here’s a chance to help out! We welcome all newcomers;
no particular skills are required, although knowing your way around phyllo dough and ground
nuts helps!
Bake Sale 2014 REMEMBER: If you have been selling this past month, please try to have
forms turned in no later than next Sunday, October 26th. The more pre-orders we have before
we start baking, the better. In addition to the baklava layering (see above announcement),
there will be lots of opportunities to help, including baking tea cookies, and at home baking
of rum balls, etc. Be on the look out for announcements concerning these opportunities and
consider how you can help. Packing day is also a great opportunity to help. This year,
packing day will be held on Saturday, December 14th. The more hands we have, the easier
the job will be. It’s also lots of fun! Don’t forget—portions of our proceeds will go towards
making our religious education building handicap accessible, so keep selling!!!
Cap City “O” Club Annual Apple Pie Sale This is one of our major annual charity
fundraisers. Pies are $15 each. To place an order, see Tammy or Michele. You can also
order by emailing Tammy [email protected] Pies will be delivered November 2nd. Thank
you for your support.
Book Club The next book club meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 28th at 7 PM in
the Upper Room. The main book we will be looking at will be: Seeds of the Word:
Orthodox Thinking on other Religions by John Garvey. An additional second, short book is
How to Respond to Muslims by Ernest Hahn. If you would like copies of either book or
both, please let Mary Conroy know as soon as possible.
Film Night Mark your calendars now for an enjoyable evening of film and fellowship! On
Saturday, November 15, the Library Committee will present the award-winning movie Ostrov
(The Island). Focusing on a modern-day holy fool, Ostrov is a deeply moving film about
repentance and healing. Ostrov will be shown in the Upper Room after Vespers, and light
refreshments will be served. (Note: not appropriate for young children)
“And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.” Acts 2:47
Looking for Feedback
The first set of plans submitted by Meleca has been hanging in the Upper Room for several
weeks. It has definitely prompted a lot of conversation amongst our parish faithful. Meleca
will likely be submitting the next set of plans in the next few weeks. If you have specific
ideas or thoughts related to the work already done, please be sure to inform either Gust
Mecera or Fr. M no later than Sunday, November 2nd. IMPORTANT: Your thoughts
and suggestions must be in written or email form. Please remember that all feedback will
be taken into account, but ultimately decisions will have to be made based on what makes
the most sense for the overall scope of the expansion project. This will not be the last time
you have the chance to share your thoughts. Each time Meleca submits an updated design,
we will display it, and ask for your input.
Tentative Time Line for our Expansion Project Going Forward
By the end of 2014—work towards having a final set of plans to be presented to the parish.
March, 2015—Concept plans approved by the city
July, 2015—Construction documents approved by the city
September, 2015—Approve contractor
May, 2016—BREAK GROUND!!!
These are tentative time lines. If you have any questions about the specifics, please don’t
hesitate to ask.
