We’re thrilled to announce that, during
this past year, B.C.’s National
Occupational Health and Safety
(NAOSH) Week experienced a
record‑breaking series of successes.
Let’s make this a yearly habit.
It’s fitting, after all. In fact, it just so
happens that the theme for NAOSH
Week-B.C. 2014 is “Make Safety a
Habit.”
As participants ponder how to
incorporate this 2014 theme into
improving health and safety in their
workplaces, it’s worth considering what
we mean by “habits,” and how they can
help — or hinder — injury prevention.
What is a habit?
A habit is an acquired behaviour pattern,
regularly followed, until it becomes
almost involuntary.
When your colleagues subconsciously
think twice before lifting, they’ve formed
a habit. When they instinctively reach
for their personal protective equipment
once they arrive at work, they’ve
acquired a habit.
And when they naturally experience
feelings of excitement in the weeks
leading up to NAOSH Week — they’re
habituated!
Building on the successes
of 2013
In looking ahead to NAOSH Week 2014,
it’s important to reflect on the strides we
made in 2013.
Last year, NAOSH Week-B.C. saw record
growth and turnouts:
• The awards luncheon sold out, with
more than 300 attendees.
• The national launch event, held in
North Vancouver May 6, provided a
high profile kick-off to NAOSH Week
across the country.
• This year’s stakeholder brunch had
more than 200 people in attendance.
• Media exposure was unparalleled: the
event attracted 16 media outlets and
widespread online exposure, including
social media channels.
• Our NAOSH Week-B.C. committee
attracted nine new members, many of
them industry health and safety
association representatives.
• Following the growth in committee
membership, employer participation
increased, representing tens of
thousands of workers, and a significant
increase in the quality and quantity of
award applications.
Make safety a habit
This continuing trend of high-quality
initiatives and submissions by B.C.
organizations reflects the value of investing
in NAOSH Week activities. It demonstrates
B.C.’s important role, within Canada, of
raising awareness of workplace health and
safety and in celebrating the success of
prevention-minded employers.
As we look forward to NAOSH Week-B.C.
2014, join us in making safety a habit, with
the goal of fostering the improvement of
occupational health and safety in
workplaces throughout B.C.
The NAOSH Week steering committee of
B.C. welcomes the opportunity to continue
working closely with you on your
innovative workplace health and safety
initiatives, and to honouring your efforts
and achievements.
• The safety playground and trade show
attracted more than 2,000 visitors.

NAOSH Week — an overview
North American Occupational Safety and Health
(NAOSH) Week is an annual, continent-wide event
involving employers, workers, and occupational
health and safety specialists promoting injury and
illness prevention in the workplace. NAOSH Week
began in 1997 as a mutually agreed-upon, annual
initiative between Canada, the United States, and
Mexico. Each country has since decided to dedicate
the first week in May toward supporting — and
recognizing — healthier, safer workplaces across
North America.
If you’re an employer, NAOSH Week provides an
excellent opportunity to focus, reinforce, and
strengthen your organization’s commitment to
occupational health and safety. Your NAOSH Week
theme for 2014 is Safety & Health: Make Safety a
Habit and takes place from Sunday, May 4 to
Saturday, May 10.
Here’s what you can do during NAOSH Week
to show your commitment to workplace health
and safety:
• Organize an activity within your organization
that reinforces the NAOSH Week theme.
• Order NAOSH Week promotional materials
to distribute to your staff
• Attend the BC NAOSH Week Launch Event May 5.
• Apply for a BC NAOSH Week award or request
a certificate of participation.
• Attend the Safety Forum & Awards Luncheon in
October (dates to be announced).
• Sponsor the BC NAOSH Week non-profit society

The history of NAOSH Week
From 1986 to 1996, prior to the creation of NAOSH
Week, the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering
(CSSE) had observed Canadian Occupational
Health and Safety (COHS) Week. During the North
American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) talks,
government labour representatives from Mexico,
the United States, and Canada jointly discussed
the role of workplace safety within the boundaries
of all three nations. At that time, Canada’s
representative brought up the subject of Canada’s
COHS Week, and suggested his Mexican and
American counterparts might wish to become
involved in a similar endeavor.
Subsequently, these groups approached the
CSSE for permission to expand the COHS Week
experience to Mexico and the United States. In
1995, after many meetings between Labour Canada
and the CSSE’s COHS Committee, a proposal
was put forward to expand the COHS format into
the North American arena. The CSSE Board of
Directors formalized this proposal at its spring
1996 meeting. The CSSE decided to adopt the
North American concept and implement it in place
of the Canadian event.
Labour Canada then agreed to officially recognize
the CSSE as the safety organization responsible for
NAOSH Week. Labour Canada would also play the
lead political role in overseeing the event in for
North America for three years, after which there
would be a review. The CSSE was then made
responsible for all management, marketing, policy,
and administration related to NAOSH Week, and
was deemed the proprietor and governing body.
In September 1996, the agreement was taken to the
NAFTA meeting and all parties agreed to the
proposal. NAOSH Week was established. Between
1997 and 2000, NAOSH Week was implemented
under this agreement.
Since 2000, the CSSE has retained responsibility
for the management of NAOSH Week. The CSSE
works hard to promote and encourage the goals
of this event, in partnership with the Canadian
Centre for Occupational Health & Safety (CCOHS),
the Labour Program of Human Resources and
Social Development Canada (HRSDC), and national
Canadian charity, the Threads of Life. In
collaboration with the American Society of Safety
Engineers (ASSE), NAOSH Week remains a truly
continent-wide event.
The NAOSH Week logo incorporates three hands that form
an equilateral triangle. This represents the three participating
nations — Canada, the United States, and Mexico — and their
cooperation and commitment to occupational health and safety.
The three sides of the triangle stand for the partnership between
all three countries, as well as all tripartite partnerships between
business, labour, and governments. The connected hands
illustrate assistance and cooperation on many levels — from
interpersonal relationships in the workplace to the international
exchange of ideas.

How to sponsor 2015 NAOSH Week–BC
NAOSH Week-B.C.’s steering committee is a registered, non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers. As a
result, our group relies heavily on the generous contributions of sponsors to fund its various annual activities.
Our committee has developed a series of categories to highlight the important role of its sponsors. These
include a “BC Sponsor” category for suppliers, distributors, manufacturers, and consultants, and a “BC
Partner” category for industry health and safety associations. In order to provide maximum media exposure
for our contributors, we have also restricted the number of eligible sponsors for NAOSH Week-B.C. 2015.
Please review the corresponding 2015 Annual Sponsorship Chart, below, and consider supporting this
worthwhile endeavour. Your commitment to NAOSH Week-B.C. 2015 will not only enhance your
organization’s reputation as a strong proponent of workplace injury and illness prevention, but contribute
significantly to the event’s success.
