Senior Care

Senior Care
Unquestionably England’s No 1
Latest report confirms top score for Home Instead
CAREGivers, “I am immensely proud to hear
these results.
“We are totally focused on providing top
quality care for older people, care which is
tailored to the needs of individuals and which
allows them to remain in their own homes,
leading an independent life. The work we do
also brings peace of mind to families and this
is also hugely important.
Home Instead Senior Care is
delighted to announce that we have,
once again, been named as England’s
top homecare provider.
The result comes from the UK’s leading
healthcare information specialist, LaingBuisson
who, for the last year, have been producing
quarterly league tables based on data from
the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC’s)
quarterly Care Compliance Monitor.
The tables shows the percentage of inspected
branches which are fully compliant with
CQC’s core standards covering care,
safeguarding, staffing, management and
respect for service users.
The most recently revealed league table
(taken from LaingBuisson’s July Care
Compliance Monitor report) shows Home
Instead in the same number one position that
we held at this time last year.
According to the information specialist, the
Care Compliance Monitor fills the void left
when the CQC ended their own star rating
scheme in 2012.
Delighted with the results, Chief Executive of
Home Instead, Trevor Brocklebank, was keen
to congratulate the company’s 6,500
“What these results confirm is that our teams
across the country, and in particular our
dedicated and committed CAREGivers, are
doing great work and it is gratifying to see this
recognised by a leading industry organisation.
“I would like to thank each and every one of
our CAREGivers for the work they do - we
could not have achieved this result without
you!”
Trevor went on to explain why Home Instead
has performed so consistently in the league
table, “Everything that we do, all of our
training and systems, is based on the needs of
the country’s growing elderly population. As
has been shown, once again, by LaingBuisson,
this focus allows us to excel.
“The fact that we focus on personalised care
packages, rather than local authority block
contracts, allows us the freedom to deliver a
blend of companionship and personal care in
a manner which makes a real difference to the
lives of the clients we serve.
“Without the typical constraints imposed by
local authorities we are able to have a
minimum care visit of one hour and the
results of the quality care we are able to
deliver are evident by our number one
position.”
Well on our way to achieving
our aim of changing the face
of ageing for the country’s
elderly population.
This is how we do it:
• Delivering a special blend of companionship
as well as personal care
• Careful matching of clients and CAREGivers
so they share interests and life experiences
• No uniforms - we believe they may create a
barrier in the relationship
• Minimum care visits of one hour, typically
two hours
• Specialist dementia training for CAREGivers
• Actively being involved in local community
initiatives including:
• Be a Santa to a Senior - a Christmas
gift-giving initiative which sees gifts
donated to the elderly in need
• Family Dementia Workshops - sharing
our expert knowledge on managing
dementia with families in local
communities
• Fraud Awareness - across the country
we are helping the elderly to be more
‘scam aware’ as we work with national
charity Think Jessica to raise awareness of
scams

Proud of
our work
It’s not only organisations like
LaingBuisson who recognise the great
work we are doing. Every year we are
active participants in the Great
British Care Awards (GBCA).
Speaking about the company’s
CAREGivers, Trevor Brocklebank
said, “We employ so many
amazing people. They don’t think
what they do is special - but to us
and our clients, it is. Through
their work we ensure that we
have only the best client and
CAREGiver relationships, built on
trust and genuine friendship.”
We have a fabulous track record of success in
these regional and national awards which
celebrate excellence across the social care
sector and pay tribute to individuals who have
excelled in their work.
Home Instead Senior Care had six national
finalists at this year’s prestigious Great British
Care Awards, held in London in June.
Here are the stories of some of our regional
and national finalists. These stories, about our
CAREGivers, help to illustrate how Home
Instead’s care service stands out from the rest.

Claire Collingsworth
The Care Newcomer - Norwich
Claire was put forward for the East of England Great British Care Awards by
Chris Carter who owns and runs the Norwich office of Home Instead.
Entering Claire for the awards, he said “Claire
exemplifies the values and personal attributes
required of a CAREGiver and has quickly
developed the technical skills and confidence
needed for the role.
“It is a privilege to work with her and a delight
to see the joy and reassurance she brings to
her clients and their families.”
Chris highlighted the work Claire does with a
lady with dementia as an example of how she
has taken to her new role in care. The client,
Mrs M, has dementia and was very resistant to
accepting any support.
She initially accepted help only at the insistence
of her London based daughter who “put her
foot down”.
Through her kindness, encouragement,
positivity and commitment, Claire transformed
this situation into one where Mrs M looked
forward to Claire’s visits.
An example of Claire’s attentiveness and
empathy was when she recognised that Mrs
M’s dresses were not fitting as well as they
used too due to weight loss. Not only did
Claire encourage Mrs M to cook and eat a
balanced diet but she also arranged for the
dresses to be taken in so Mrs M felt more
comfortable.
Mrs M and Claire quickly became companions
and when Mrs M was admitted to hospital,
Claire was a regular visitor to provide support
and a friendly, familiar face.
Mrs M’s daughter recognised the special
quality of the relationship and when the family
decided to move Mrs M to a residential home
closer to their home in London, Claire was
asked if she could continue to visit Mrs M in
Claire with two of her clients
the residential home to ease the transition
which is exactly what she did.
Chris added “Claire brings peace of mind to
her clients and their families, and that is so
important.”
Christine Camsell
The Dementia Carer Award - Durham
Our lovely Home Instead CAREGiver, Christine Cansell from the Durham office,
was a runner up in the North East finals of the Great British Care Awards.
Christine was nominated for the work she
does with Sue who has advanced dementia and
is only 67.
She is as far removed from being a ‘task based’
carer as you can get, and she wholeheartedly
encourages her client’s independence. Her
ethos is very much ‘I’m here to help you, let’s
do this together’.
Before being cared for by Christine, Sue wasn’t
really coping and was frequently calling
neighbours in great distress.
Christine’s ‘can do’ attitude, her quiet but
confident presence in Sue’s home and
commitment to providing a personalised
service has transformed Sue’s life.
On hearing that Sue used to bake a lot,
Christine has encouraged and supported Sue
to get mixing again and the pair spend time
together in the kitchen preparing all sorts of
baked delights.
Christine also spends time pampering Sue,
with lovely long bubbly baths, styling her hair
and painting her nails. These rituals have
helped Sue to retain her individual identity;
something Christine understands is easily lost
with dementia.
Keen to keep Sue active and involved in
everyday life, Christine ensures that Sue joins
her to do small household tasks. This has
given Sue a real sense of achievement which is
so important for someone with dementia.
Christine Camsell, Durham
Such is her commitment to caring for her client
and ensuring continuity of care that Christine,
on hearing that her alternative CAREGiver was
ill and unable to stand in during a planned
holiday, cancelled her trip in order to provide
stability for Sue. In her view “Sue needed
continuity much more than I needed a trip
away.”
Halie Richardson
The Care Newcomer - Barnet
Halie is only 26 and has been working with the Barnet office since early 2012.
Halie has spent many years supporting her
disabled mother and younger brother
providing personal care, food preparation, and
dealing with medication. She also juggles her
care duties with the responsibilities of bringing
up her daughter.
Halie goes out of her way to engage and
stimulate her clients, one of whom, Eleanor,
suffers from arthritis and limited mobility.
Rather than let her immobility stop Eleanor
from enjoying everyday life, Halie has engaged
her client and encouraged her to do normal
things. By keeping her in touch with her
interests in gardening, watching Strictly Come
Dancing, and keeping up with the latest tennis
competitions, Halie has enriched Eleanor’s
everyday life.
We all know that hobbies, pastimes and a
simple thing like ‘watching the telly’ become
far more rewarding and enjoyable when
shared with friends. Halie and her work with
Eleanor have shown how companionship care
can re-invigorate someone.

Enis Evans
The Dignity in Care Award, Sheffield
It was an obvious choice for Bryn from our Sheffield office to put forward
empathetic Enis for the Dignity in Care award.
Enis joined Home Instead in 2006 when as a
retired nurse, she felt that she still had much
more to offer to the community. Her wealth of
knowledge and experience in providing
continuity of care to vulnerable clients, has
been invaluable within her hands on role as a
CAREGiver. Enis’ benchmark is dignity and
respect, and she shows this at all times.
Her oldest client is 103 years, and with Enis’
support she is able to go out for lunch once a
week. Her son commented, “Mum looks
forward to Enis’s visits far more at times than
visits from us. The relationship they have built
together provides Mum with some
independence and confidence and brightens
her week.”
Enis has also been providing support to a lady
with advanced Parkinson’s for the past 7 years.
She offers her client care, support and dignity,
which gives her client’s daughter the
reassurance that whilst she is away her mum is
being taken care of by someone who really
understands her mother’s needs.
Enis truly loves what she does and travels
extensively to provide care to her clients. Enis’
commitment is tremendous, she never lets
her clients down and feels honoured to be
able to make a real difference to their lives.

Lord Digby Jones
joins Redditch &
Bromsgrove
office for first
anniversary
Whilst gaining acknowledgement from professional organisations such as
LaingBuisson for the quality of our service is wonderful, we are always
delighted to gain positive feedback from family members.
In June, we received praise from none-other than Lord Digby Jones, who took
time out of his busy schedule to join Annie Dixon-Dunn, owner of the Redditch
& Bromsgrove office, to help her celebrate her first year in business.
Lord Jones joined Annie for the event as his mother had been cared for by
Annie’s team. Following a move to Warwickshire, she was subsequently cared
for by Phil Maundrill and his team at the Warwickshire office.
Speaking at the event, Lord Jones said, “I am delighted to join Home Instead at
their first year anniversary celebrations. Caring for those older members of our
communities in their own homes, giving them support, confidence and dignity as
they meet the challenges old age brings, is not only important but will become
increasingly so as our society grows older by the year. Home Instead are
excellent care providers; I know.....they look after my Mum!”
Come and
work for us!
Home Instead Senior Care employs in the region of 6,500
CAREGivers across the UK, delivering an invaluable service to
their clients.
We are always on the lookout for caring, compassionate people to join the team.
Because we provide training, no prior experience of care is necessary - just the
