GEOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS IN THE CHIPPEWA VALLEY
with Dr. Kent Syverson Ph.D, Chair, UW-Eau Claire Department of Geology
Saturday, June 21 | 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Join Dr. Kent Syverson on a day long field trip to discover the Environmental Geology of the Chippewa
Valley. You will see evidence of ancient mountains, sandstones deposited by ancient oceans (and now
in demand for frac sand), and sediment deposited by glaciers. Stops will include: the Seven Mile Creek
Landfill, Big Falls County Park, Jim Falls Hydro Generating Station, the Chippewa Moraine Ice Age Reserve,
and a drive-by of several frac sand mining and processing sites. This field trip will provide you with an
excellent overview of the geology of the Chippewa Valley, as well as an understanding of how human
activities impact the environment in the Chippewa Valley.

WOUND TREATMENT ASSOCIATE ONLINE PROGRAM

Developed to meet the growing need for skilled wound care providers across settings and enhance
nurses’ ability to provide optimal care for patients with acute and chronic wounds as members of a
collaborative wound care team, this course is designed for the Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical/
Vocational Nurse or military medic/corpsman. However, any health care provider may benefit from this
comprehensive certificate program.
The Wound Treatment Associate (WTA) Program is a Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses (WOCN®)
Society-endorsed educational program geared toward non-specialty licensed nurses. This course will
focus on daily patient monitoring, pressure ulcer prevention and basic wound management to improve
outcomes for your patients.
You will be guided through narrated PowerPoint presentations by a WOCN specialty nurse Course
Coordinator who will answer any questions you might have along the way.
After completing the lessons, you will take a timed online test and participate in a one-day clinical skills

is often neglected in formal nursing education,

developmental phonological disorders as you
gain knowledge about definitions of disorder
types, development of English phonology,
factors related to disorders vs. differences, causes
and correlates of disorder, and assessment
procedures and intervention strategies.

An introduction to the prevention, evaluation
and treatment of voice and resonance
disorders, as well as relevant speech / voice
instrumentation. You will study the normal
aspects of respiration, phonation and resonance
and develop an understanding of the causes and
characteristics of various voice and resonance

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
OF SPEECH AND HEARING

Using online resources, you’ll engage in the
study of the anatomy and physiology of each
system included in the speech and hearing
mechanisms, including terminology / terms-of
orientation, neurology, respiration, phonation,
articulation, resonance, and hearing systems.
As a primary goal, you’ll solidify applications of
these systems to speech, hearing, and language

BASIC AUDIOLOGY

In this course you will study the effects of hearing
loss on perceptual, cognitive, communicative,
educational, occupational, social, and
emotional aspects of life for all age ranges.
You’ll be able to identify common intervention
techniques including communication strategies
training, auditory training, speech reading,
hearing aids, assistive devices, and cochlear
implantation. You will build proficiency in the
application of assessment tools, and developing
recommendations for rehabilitation for infants
through adults. (CSD 321)

DEVELOPMENTAL
LANGUAGE DISORDERS

Join this class to examine the characteristics
of language disorders in children from birth
through adolescence. You’ll leave this class
with increased knowledge of assessment and
intervention strategies appropriate for that
population. (CSD 331)

FLUENCY DISORDERS

In this course we will explore the nature
and theories of stuttering and other fluency
disorders. We will also cover all aspects of clinical
intervention for people who stutter, including
both evaluation/assessment/diagnosis and
treatment to gain an understanding of how
theories can be clinically useful. (CSD 352)

This course will provide you with an introduction
to the field of audiology, including anatomy
and physiology, pathologies of hearing, basic
evaluation, differential evaluation, physiological
procedures, nonorganic hearing loss, pediatric
evaluation, hearing conservation, and
rehabilitation. Our primary focus will be upon
pure tone thresholds, speech audiometry, and
masking. (CSD 373)

NEUROLOGICAL ASPECTS
OF COMMUNICATION
June 9 – August 1
We will focus on normal functions; aspects of
disease, trauma, and developmental disruptions
will be addressed in cases designed to solidify
knowledge of typical structures and functions.
To achieve this, we will use a problem-based
approach, utilizing case studies to highlight
neurophysiological principles and potential
breakdowns. Furthermore, student presentations
discussing the neurological underpinnings of
various diseases, processes, and phenomena
forge further connections in this understanding,
along with an introduction to interpretations
of neuroimaging, neuroscience research, and
pathologies, and an emerging understanding
of the brain and nervous system as a distributed
network develops. (CSD 440)

intervention strategies.
