HONOR GUARD SALUTE More than 30 people traveled along an old wagon path for a quarter of a mile and then up a small hill to the grave of Andrew Oilar, veteran of the War of 1812, a British prisoner of war and first cousin to Abraham Lincoln. The purpose of the trek was to honor Oilar as one of Lee County’s earliest settlers during the 12th annual Pioneer Patriots Day sponsored by the Lee County Pioneer Cemetery Association. ASSOCIATION FOUNDED IN 2003 The annual event was founded in 2003 to alert the public to the many pioneer cemeteries in the county that were abandoned and neglected for decades. The event also is held in active cemeteries to honor the many pioneers buried in those graveyards. The Oilar Family Cemetery COURTESY / LINDA ALTHEIDE Members of the Old Fort honor guard, Stark’s Company 1st Infantry Regiment, fired three volleys from their muskets to honor Oilar’s service to his country during Saturday’s Pioneer Patriot’s Day observance. has three other graves, all grandchildren of the elder Oilar who died in 1854. All three children also died in the 1850s. Following a welcome by association member Terry Altheide, the Rev. Dale Thomas of First Baptist Church in Keokuk led the group in an invocation. Dr. Eugene Watkins, site manager for Old Fort Madison, delivered a few remarks. “One could easily imagine the trials he faced in dealing with the weather, poor food, the boredom of garrison duty, the stress and fear of combat and loss of friends,” Watkins said. Brooklynn Finch and Neil Dodson, members of the Calvary Baptist youth group, Members of the Old Fort honor guard, Stark’s Company 1st Infantry Regiment, fired three volleys from their muskets to honor Oilar’s service to his country. William Hall, Clinton, a member of Bugles Across America, played Taps in his ninth appearance at the annual ceremony. Thomas gave the benediction and the colors were retired. A cake was furnished by Ogo’s Restaurant and Buffet was served along with bottled water. Members of American Legion Post 41 and the Lee County Veterans Project also attended the ceremony. The wreath for Oilar’s grave was created by Linda Altheide. Contact Kim Irvin at 319463-5689 for more information about the cemetery association. Iowa lottery to add Monopoly Millionaires DES MOINES — Iowa will be part of a new premium lotto game debuting across the country this fall. The $5 lottery game, called MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES’ CLUB, will begin sales Oct. 19, offering players three chances on each ticket to win a prize of at least $1 million: through a weekly lotto drawing; in a separate drawing triggered only when the game’s Top Prize is won; and on a nationally televised game show. “Lotteries are following the same successful business model on the lotto side that we’ve used for years with instant-scratch and pull-tab games: We offer different games at different price points to provide the variety and choices today’s consumers want,” Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich said Tuesday during a meeting of the Iowa Lottery Board in Des Moines, where the Board discussed the latest details about Iowa’s plans for the game. “The MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES’ CLUB lottery game will be the first $5 multi-state lotto game, further diversifying our offerings in the lotto category.” The MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES’ CLUB lottery game will combine the highstakes and rich rewards of multi-state lottery games with the fun and entertainment of a national television game show featuring players selected from among the lottery ticket holders who have registered their tickets online or via a smartphone app. THREE WAYS TO WIN The playing feature in the MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES’ CLUB lottery game that may be most familiar will be its weekly lotto drawing. Players will choose five numbers from a pool of 52. They can select their own numbers or make an “easy pick” and allow the numbers to be randomly generated for them. After the first five numbers have been selected, the lottery terminal will automatically pick an additional number from 1 to 28 that also will represent a Property on the MONOPOLY game board. Players will not be able to choose this number on their own; it will always be generated by the terminal. The Top Prize in the game’s weekly lotto drawing will start at $15 million and can roll without being won only three times to a maximum of $25 million. After that, the Top Prize will remain capped at $25 million until it is won and the rest of the money that would have helped it grow will instead be used to create SIEMENS PROJECT Siemens lands $280 million project If you’re NOT SUBSCRIBING to the Daily Democrat... Here’s What You’ve Missed HOMECOMING ROYALTY Billy Coppage and Ali Burghoffer named FMHS Homecoming royalty more and more winners of $1 million each. There will be at least 10 winners of a $1 million prize each time the Top Prize is won and it’s anticipated there could be dozens. “The unique design of the MONOPOLY MILLIONAIRES’ CLUB lottery game is expected to generate more millionaires than any other game in lottery history,” Rich said. The game’s weekly lotto drawing will be held at 10:15 p.m. (central time) on Fridays. Players can win the Top Prize by matching all six numbers selected in the weekly drawing. INDIANS ON HIS TAIL JANE M. JOHNSON [email protected] IOWA In Iowa, Caroline Soule wrote, The Pet of the Settlement (1860). It is a story set in Boonsboro, Iowa on the Upper Des Moines River. The story is a fantasy and an image of the captive narrative; a story about Eden (garden), evil and good and romance on the Iowa prairie. Francis D. Gage reflected on her travels across Iowa in “Sketches on Iowa” published in 1854 in the New York Tribune. In this sketch she is writing her impressions about the magnificence and beauty of the Iowa land — a trip from Burlington to Oskaloosa. DES MOINES RIVER Sarah Welch Nossaman recalled her experiences while living along the DMR in the Bonaparte area. Sarah’s experiences are in a journal format submitted by her granddaughter. Sarah was a teenager when her family moved to the DMR, around 1835, from Illinois where they had lived for a couple of years. Sarah was born in Wilkes County, South Carolina and she moved with her family to Richmond, Indiana when she was about six years old. Then hearing about the land opening in Illinois they moved to the Mackinaw River. They planted too late in the season so their corn and potatoes did not mature. They experienced hunger, cold and sickness living on parched corn and potatoes all winter. Her parents both were sick with the bilious fever and since Sarah was the oldest it was her duty to care for the family. Her father recovered and found a job at a mill on the river and their situation improved. But, the Black Hawk War broke out and their lives were threatened. A few of their neighbors were killed so to escape the war they moved to an uncle’s place in Jacksonville and then they moved to Alton. New opportunities presented themselves with the Black Hawk Purchase and the family moved to Van Buren County in the Wisconsin Territory. Sarah’s father was a potter by trade who started the first pottery in the new territory. New Lexington or Lexington (near Bonaparte) was a town in the 1830s with a store and post office. Sarah knew the Indian trader, James Jordan as Uncle Jimmy Jordan, Black Hawk, Keokuk, Wapello, Hard Fish, Kishkakosh, Naseaskuk and other Sac and Fox Indians. She relates that Black Hawk and his son were frequent visi- William Turner kept a store at Lexington. His brother was the infamous Dr. James Turner who cut off the head of Black Hawk. At the time Sarah was caring for William Turner’s ill wife. She recalls Dr. Turner returning to the house from Iowaville with Black Hawk’s head and boiling off the flesh. Dr. Turner was forewarned that a group of Indians with war paint were on his trail. Turner fled to Missouri. Also, William and his wife made their escape in a canoe downriver. Times were hard according to Sarah until Judge Meek moved to New Lexington from Michigan to build a mill. Meek bought Robert Moffatt’s claim where a large orchard of sugar (trees) stood on the land. Her father earned some money working for Meek making sugar during the spring for a few years. The claim was laid out in towns lots as the trees were cleared (about three years) to become the town of Bonaparte. EARNING MONEY Men and women in the community could earn some money to buy store clothes while employed by the Meeks. Also, Sarah worked for the Meeks so she could buy store clothes rather than homemade clothes. She and Mrs. Meek cooked for over forty men every day using a fireplace while the mill was built. Sarah earned 75 cents a week and she recalls that it cost 25 cents to pick up a letter from the post office. Calico cost 25 to 50 cents a yard; sheeting costs 25 to 30 cents a yard. Her father sold the pottery and moved to Fairfield. Sarah married and moved just south of Pella. Their first home was a shanty that they lived in the first summer. It had no doors or fireplace. She couldn’t cook or keep out snakes or skunks. At night they heard wolves howling and owls screeching and she felt very lonely. The Indians were their companions for a while until more white families began moving in that included several couples from Lee County. MILL FAR AWAY They raised a good crop of wheat and corn in 1844 but the nearest mill was at Bonaparte, which was a long journey. Becoming tired of the long trips to Bonaparte, her father and husband fashioned a stump mill using oxen power. It ground corn but not wheat and only three pecks of corn in an hour. Often, fifteen to twenty men were waiting in line to get a bushel of meal. Sarah cooked meals, baked and prepared the game the men brought her. She recalls it as very hard work. Also, the men slept overnight on the floor. Her father told her to allow as many boarders as puncheons on the floor. Their neighbors built a mill on the Skunk River that could grind wheat and corn. Sarah remembers that the wheat flour was dark gray because horses tramped the wheat out on a dirt floor.
