THE SSO ANN OUNCES
ITS 2014 SE ASON
“It’s when the lights go down, the hush of expectation fills the hall
and the orchestra engages in artistry, precision and passion
for music...that’s when the wonder of music transports us all.
There’s no better way to feel inspired – I get goose bumps
just thinking about it!” David Robertson, Chief Conductor and Artistic Director
The Sydney Symphony Orchestra, together with Chief Conductor and Artistic Director
David Robertson, is proud to announce their 2014 season, full of stimulating and diverse
offerings for every concert-goer – seasoned and new.
For his inaugural season as Chief Conductor, David Robertson has invited some of
the world’s greatest soloists and conductors to come to Sydney to perform with the
orchestra, including pianists Emanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman, violinists Anne-Sophie
Mutter and James Ehnes, and cellists Lynn Harrell and Truls Mørk.
David Robertson will be in Sydney three times during 2014 – February, June and August –
conducting music ranging from Beethoven’s seventh symphony to the film scores of
composer John Williams. A highlight of Robertson’s first season will be the concert hall
production of Strauss’s opera Elektra with star vocal soloists including Christine Goerke,
Lisa Gasteen and Cheryl Barker, and featuring the Sydney Dance Company.
The 2014 season starts with the return to Sydney of violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter
performing three Mozart violin concertos in the one program. Another highlight of the
season occurs in June when Emanuel Ax performs all five Beethoven piano concertos
across two weeks, conducted by David Robertson. And to conclude the season,
Donald Runnicles conducts the orchestra in two programs featuring pianist Yefim
Bronfman and violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann.
Surrounding these major events comes another packed year of concert offerings,
from the Master Series, which in 2014 features Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Christine
Brewer singing Strauss’s Four Last Songs to the Kaleidoscope series, which focuses
on movie music with screenings of The Matrix and West Side Story accompanied
by the full orchestra.
In 2014, the SSO also introduces a new brand identity and a new logo. After more than
ten years, the SSO is re-introducing the word ‘orchestra’ into its name, now officially
known as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Along with this name change comes a new
logo – a visual abstraction of both orchestra and audience, intended to represent the
dynamic and exciting concerts on offer.
In 2014, the SSO begins a new journey of inspiration with its audiences. With David
Robertson at the helm and a choice of concerts from across 11 different subscription
series, there has never been a greater time to be part of the SSO family.

2014 marks the beginning of the SSO’s five-year relationship with
David Robertson in his role as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director.
Embarking on this exciting creative partnership, Robertson
will visit Sydney three times in 2014 – February, June and August –
to conduct a series of inspiring programs including Strauss’s
opera Elektra, the complete Beethoven piano concertos
and the music of legendary film composer John Williams.

Elektra dreams of vengeance. Her father
the king has been murdered in his bath and
her mother and the guilty lover must pay.
Only then can she dance for joy. The return
of her long-lost brother triggers the horrific
conclusion. No happy endings here.
This is Richard Strauss’s biggest opera,
calling for more than a hundred orchestral
musicians, so the concert hall is the place to
hear it in its true glory. With David Robertson
and the SSO sharing the platform with a
great cast of singers and members of the
Sydney Dance Company, you’ll be blown
away by the fierceness and the sublimated
eroticism of this gripping theatrical event.

Pepe Romero guitar
Each instrument has its own ‘royal family’
and Pepe Romero is the undoubted king
of the classical guitar world, with an
international performance career spanning
more than 50 years. In 2014 he returns
to Australia for his Sydney Symphony
Orchestra debut in two highly anticipated
special event concerts featuring Rodrigo’s
much-loved Concierto de Aranjuez, and the
heart-melting lute concerto by Vivaldi that
guitarists have made their own. Music of
ardent passion played by a living legend.

we’ve invited Canadian violinist James
Ehnes to play and direct, leading the strings
of the SSO in Vivaldi’s masterpiece. And
so our wind players won’t feel left out
of this special event, we’ve programmed
wind ensemble music by Mozart, including
an arrangement of his dramatic overture
to Don Giovanni.

THE SYDNEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND EMIRATES
ANNOUNCE RENEWAL OF PRINCIPAL PARTNERSHIP
The Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Emirates have
announced the three-year renewal of their Principal Partner
relationship from 2014, making it one of the longest
running partnerships for the SSO, with 2014 marking
the 12th anniversary of the collaboration between
the two organisations.
According to SSO Managing Director Rory Jeffes, the
orchestra and Emirates both pride themselves on first class
service and experiences, allowing for a great partnership.
“Like Emirates, the SSO prides itself on the quality of
our customer service, the highest standards, and the
excitement of a wonderful experience. Our partnership with
one of the world's greatest airlines will continue to help the
SSO present the very best live symphonic experience to the
widest possible audience, both at our home at the Sydney
Opera House and throughout the world, ” said Mr Jeffes.
“As part of this new agreement, Emirates will continue as

Metro Series. And those flying on Emirates will be able to
watch SSO concerts on the Emirates inflight entertainment
system, ice, which recently took out the award for best
inflight entertainment for the ninth year running in the
Skytrax Awards.
“I am delighted with the renewal of our partnership,
and thank Emirates for their vision and continued support
of the SSO,” added Mr Jeffes
Barry Brown, Emirates Divisional Senior Vice President,
Commercial Operations, East said: “Emirates considers its
role as Principal Partner of the SSO to be an enormously
valuable component of its extensive sponsorship portfolio
and its business activity.”
“The orchestra brings together the finest classical music
talents, so it is only fitting that Emirates, which combines
best-in-class products for a memorable flying experience,
is the Principal Partner,” Mr Brown said.
“This partnership is about connecting with our customers.
We are dedicated to the growth of arts and culture in
Australia, and the SSO allows us to showcase the Emirates
brand to music lovers around the country and the world,
from its home at the Sydney Opera House,” he continued.
“Renewing the partnership with the orchestra is an integral
part of our long term commitment to Sydney, and Australia,”
he concluded.
The SSO has been present during many of Emirates’ key
milestones, including the launch of the Airbus A380 and
performing at events for partners, including the Australian
Jockey Club and Collingwood Football Club plus a chamber
music weekend in 2013 at Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort
and Spa.
