Message Notes: Pull out a coin, not for luck but for remembering: DG
REGINA “By the Grace of God Queen” God is our Emperor/King/Ruler,
if we choose wisely. A better king/queen you will not find on earth.
Whatever glory this world exalts, pales to the glory Moses saw.
Religious leaders did not see glory, but threat, in Jesus. His parables
stung, pointing out hypocrisy. The Pharisees, though, are unsuccessful at
trapping Jesus, his glory evident in his wisdom. “Look at the coin and
whose face is on it” Jesus says. “Give to the Emperor what is his and to
God what is God’s.” As people with dual citizenship – earth and heaven –
we look to Jesus, the crucified, risen one, to see God’s glory. In his
vulnerability and victory, our life is transformed. How does your life and
mine, and our community life reflect God’s glory? Are glory days a thing
of the past, present and future?
Joyce Rupp wrote in Fresh Bread, “Autumn is the season of vulnerability,
when trees open wide to wounding, when all the summer security is given
way to another season. Wiser are the trees than humans who clutch small
arms round self, shielding fragile hearts and stifling future springtimes.”
