St. Mark: a community of movers and shakers
“Go jump in the lake!” This is a phrase that seems to be following me as of late.
This September, I did a crazy thing with the hope of improving my health and
opening up faith-building opportunities for children in New England. I joined a
“Reach the Beach” team as one of 12 runners in a 207-mile relay which started at
Cannon Mountain and finished at Hamden Beach in New Hampshire. Each team
member ran three legs of the race; the legs varied from 4 –9 miles each. The race
began at 7 am on Friday and our teams finished 34 hours later, around 5 pm on
Saturday. Due to generous and enthusiastic donors, our teams raised over
$50,000 to send under-privileged kids to camp before all four Calumet teams
reached the beach. The team to which I was assigned was named “Jump in the
lake!”
I held onto the image of our name and used it as fodder to keep running - down the
mountain - toward the water, where I imagined my sore muscles might take a
refreshing dip once I finished my combined 17.9 miles. It turns out that Saturday
was a cold and blustery day and given my weariness at the finish, there was no
jumping into any lakes or oceans. There was, however, some definite jumping for
joy in celebration of our accomplishment.
The next day, St. Mark celebrated a new year of Faith Education inspired by our
theme of “Faith that Moves Mountains,” based on Jesus’ teaching on prayer in Mark
11:20-26. When reflecting on the passage in Adult Forum, I was surprised to read
Eugene Peterson’s interpretation of verses 22-23: “Embrace this God-life… and
nothing will be too much for you. This mountain, for instance: Just say, ‘Go jump in
the lake’—and it’s as good as done.” There it was again! The same phrase that,
only hours before, had guided me 207 miles down a mountain.
After growing up in the flatlands of Illinois, I feel blessed by opportunities to interact
directly with mountains; this includes hikes up Mt. Rainier in Washington, Mt. Elbert
in Colorado, Mt. Washington in New Hampshire, and even the Mount of Olives in
Jerusalem. I find them to be a source of strength and inspiration, and a place
where I feel close to God. What I do not find them to be, however, is easy to move.
I have never seen or told one, for instance, “go jump in a lake.”
As we are discovering in our weekly mission moments, there are many
undocumented mountains that stand as overwhelming challenges in our path or the
paths of people we know and love. These mountains aren’t measured by their
elevation and they aren’t ones we would choose to summit for recreation. They are
known by names like Cancer, Hunger, Disaster, Poverty, Addiction, Violence.
According to Jesus, when we “embrace this God-life”, we receive a power that is
greater than any in the created world. This is the power of faith – a deep and
abiding trust in the One who sculpted the mountains and all the dry land, whose
word creates light and life and has the power to calm the storm. Can faith move
mountains, even formidable, insurmountable ones? Can it tell them to jump in a
lake, and it’s as good as done?
Our Mission:
In joy,
we share
Christ’s truth.

St. Mark has begun collecting and sharing various responses to these questions. Check out the website or come to church any Sunday to find out the latest mountains we humbly and yet boldly are working to overcome. No one can move a boulder, much less a whole mountain, on their own. But working together, united in prayer and with the help of God, anything is possible.
My Calumet relay team is over for this year. Mission is accomplished. But I hope to continue my work
alongside you as an ongoing team “Jump in the Lake” as we tell mountains here and there, by our
words and actions, to do just that.
May we be stirred by the Spirit to be a community of movers and shakers of mountains and molehills,
for the sake of the Gospel.
In Christ,
Pastor Lydia
St. Mark receives Clergy Renewal Grant
St. Mark is the grateful recipient of a Lilly Clergy Renewal Grant. The grant award of $46,000 will allow for Pastor Lydia to take a three-month sabbatical next year and provide opportunities for the congregation of St. Mark to engage in worship and community renewal activities during that time. Pastor
Lydia and leaders of St. Mark applied for the ecumenical grant last Spring; our congregation was one
of four in Connecticut to receive the award. Two other congregations in the area include South Congregational Church in South Glastonbury (Pastor Liz Miller who will be going to Chicago and Berlin
next summer) and Trinity Lutheran Church in Vernon (Pastor Tim Oslovich who will be going to New
Zealand in winter 2015). Pastor Lydia plans to spend several weeks studying at a monastery in Iona,
Scotland—accompanied by her mother for part of the time — followed by some weeks of hiking and
kayaking for both physical and spiritual renewal. She will work with the Staff Support Committee and
Sabbatical Task Force in planning for her time away in late summer and fall of next year.

Properties Committee Update - Ron Strine
Plans for replacing the flooring in the Fellowship Hall & kitchen go back two
years. The Hoff Bequest and narthex carpeting provided the funds and the
pricing leverage to allow us to proceed with a plan for new vinyl tile flooring.
The existing tile has been in place for over 30 years, is no longer attractive
and has several broken tiles.
A proposal for both the carpeting and tile flooring was received from Glastonbury Carpet early this year. A committee was formed to select tile color and
the cost estimates were finalized last month at a total of $8,067.
Work is to begin the week of October 20 and the Hall will be unavailable for
use the entire week.
The Property Committee plans to move into storage some items currently in
the Hall and keep other items in the hall for functionality . The plan is to start clearing the Hall following services on October 19 and moving back Saturday October 25. We will be asking for volunteers
to help with the move.
Tangled Blue returns!
The Lutheran folk-rock band Tangled Blue will return to St. Mark this winter to lead us in Advent
Worship on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 10:15 am and to lead a Spirited Carols Night at Hanafin Pub and
Restaurant that same day—Nov. 30—at 7:00 pm. There may even be a surprise visit from St.
Nick that night! Joel and Aimee Pakan, the talented artists who comprise the band, are schoolmates of Pastor Lydia from Concordia University in St. Paul, MN.

Youth Happenings at St. Mark - Christa Conway, Youth Minister
Happy Autumn!! My favorite season is here, and it is hard to believe it is already October. There are exciting things brewing
for St. Mark Youth and Friends in the upcoming months! Here are some highlights.
September - In September, we had a great trip to Hammonasset, as usual! James, Grace, and Jae (from Goodness
Korean) as well as Pastor Lydia and I had lots of fun with band Red Letter Reign and speakers Pastor Mark Huber from
Sanctuary in Marshfield, Pastor Tiffany Chaney, and our Bishop Hazelwood! We camped with our friends from Faith Lutheran in Middletown (including Joal Lentz and her kids!) Start thinking about next year – Hammo is open to youth in
grades 8-12, and is a really awesome time.
October 20th - This is the deadline to sign up for the ELCA National Youth Gathering in Detroit, July 2015! We had an information meeting at the end of September, and a letter with all of that information has been sent to families who have
shown interest. Please contact me ([email protected]) if your 8th-12th grader is at all interested and I will send
you that letter. We will be finding another church to blend with, and we’d love to have a great representation from St. Mark!
October/November- We are hosting another interactive youth service – Youth Fusion 2.0! Last year we had an awesome time with youth from different faith communities around St. Mark’s. We’re doing it again! The date is not settled yet,
as we are waiting on confirmation from our special guest speaker. Expect it to be a great way to spend your Sunday
night. This is for grades 6-12. Stay tuned!
Ongoing- 7th-12th graders, please join us for Sunday Morning Conversations. We meet at church at 9am every Sunday! This year, we’ll have a special guest once a month, and we’ll also make a home-cooked breakfast once a month at
church. We have a good time, come and join!
In the meantime, keep checking the youth corner (bulletin board and white board calendar). This is where you’ll find dates
of some public events that showcase our awesome youth in action around the community, and youth events. Also check
that area for ways that the adults can be involved! Peace!!

Autumn 2014
Fellowship Committee Update - Linda Hilliard
Greetings from the fellowship committee. If you enjoy planning fellowship events, please
join us!
In this autumn newsletter, I would like to highlight four events coming up this fall.
First of all, it is our pleasure to again host the group of chamber musicians known as Cuatro Puntos in a series of five concerts this year, in our sanctuary. Please read about
these musicians at cuatropuntos.org.
Friday, October 3rd at 7:30 they will present “ Intimate Letters” . Light refreshments
follow the concert, which is free of charge, but donations to their mission of crafting
peace in the world through music are always welcome.
Thursday, October 30th at 7:30 a second concert entitled “ Something Borrowed”
will be offered which will also feature our new grand piano. On Sunday, September 28 th,
Kevin Bishop spent time with our Sunday School children, as well as a large group of
interested adults showing slides from their summer trips to Bolivia and Afghanistan
where they spread music and good will to the citizens, and taught classes to children.
Our children were amazed to hear that not long ago, in Afghanistan, music was against
the law. There are several wonderful video clips and photos of performances during
their summer tour on their website for you to explore. Hope to see you at the concerts.
Friday, November 21st, we will be presenting A Taste Of St. Mark. Everyone is challenged to create their best recipe, print it out, and add it to the table as we feast on the
best culinary delights from the files of our members. Be prepared to sample delicate
cakes and kicked up chili. This event is also an opportunity to honor and thank our own
Deb Gresens for her many years of serving as Sunday School Superintendent, so bring
your best Deb story!
Sunday, December 14th our 10:15 service will feature the annual Sunday School Christmas
Pageant during the regular worship service. All are invited to stay afterwards for a festive holiday potluck lunch in the fellowship hall.
May God bless our time together.
Linda Hilliard and the fellowship committee
MACC CHARITIES UPDATE
CROP Walk: Taking place on Sunday, October 19, the CROP Hunger Walk is an annual event that raises awareness to the
problem of hunger in our community and globally. Your church is invited to participate by building a team of walkers and
raising support, which goes to local and global efforts to combat hunger. You can pre-register online at http://
www.cropwalk.org. There you can also navigate to our local hunger walk to learn more information and sign up as a team.
We have a faith sharing team which meets in our shelter every Tuesday from 7-8pm. They are looking for more volunteers
interested in meeting with clients to listen and share. Anyone interested should contact us at [email protected].
As we enter the cold seasons, our Church Mouse Thrift Shoppe is looking for the following: Men's underwear, socks, gloves,
jeans and footwear; children's gloves and jackets, women's jackets. Donations can be dropped to the thrift shop at any time
in the outdoor donation bin at 456 1/2 Main Street (behind our pantry at 460 Main Street).
Our pantry is always looking for support from the community, here are some of the current needs: cereal, peanut butter,
soup chunky, pasta sauce, canned corn, pasta, snack stuff (crackers, chips, granola bars), peas, mayo and condiments.
Canned pastas. Donations can be dropped off anytime from 9-4:30 M-F, although calling ahead is the best way to ensure
someone is here to take in the donation. You can call 860-647-8003 x26 or email [email protected] with
your preferred time.
For the churches that have their volunteers stay over in the shelter, your wake up time has changed. Breakfast is not until
7am on weekdays (weekend is the same), which means a little more rest for any volunteers who slept over!

Camp Calumet Happenings
Men's Weekend
OCTOBER 17th - 19th, 2014
This weekend is all about taking time off from your busy schedule to concentrate on re-connecting with old friends while making new ones. It’s
about finding some down time where you can relax and rejuvenate, play
some cards, talk about the stresses and strains of daily life, and reflect on
what it means to lead a good Christian life. Thought provoking discussions,
recreation, service project, good food, comfortable accomodations, inspirational worship ... it's all here during the Men's Weekend.
This year's theme is "Weathering the Storms of Life." The featured speakers include Scot Henley, Captain Larry
Brudnicki, and Todd Gothberg. Scot is the executive director of the Mount Washington Observatory. The Observatory's mission is to advance understanding of the natural systems that create the Earth's weather and climate.
Their success depends on maintaining the mountaintop weather station, conducting research and education programs, and interpreting the heritage of the Mount Washington region. Todd is a father (and Calumet alum), an
athlete (runner, biker, swimmer), an author ("No Reservations: A Story About Building Customer Loyalty One
Relationship At A Time"), and an expert at examining leadership and best practices in the service industry. He
excels at helping people dream big and feels a calling to walk with people as they explore the ways God is trying
to use them in the world. Larry led two dramatic rescue missions during the worst weather in 100 years, dubbed
"The Perfect Storm." This harrowing story of real people battling for survival on a sea gone wild became a best selling book and a top-grossing film starring George Clooney. A member at Community Lutheran Church in Enfield, NH, Larry speaks all over the country. It is going to be such a pleasure to have him here at Calumet this
fall.
Women's Weekends
NOVEMBER 7 - 9, 2014 (Weekend 1)
Chaplain: Pastor Patricia Harris, Prince of Peace, Claremont, NH
NOVEMBER 14 - 16, 2014 (Weekend 2)
Chaplain: Pastor Sara J. Anderson, Associate to the BIshop, New
England Synod
NOVEMBER 21 - 23, 2014 (Weekend 3)
Chaplain: Pastor Anne Roser, Lutheran Church of the Nativity,
North Conway, NH
2014 THEME: "Living in God's Time" based on Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
Women's Weekends at Calumet are among the most popular programs we have here at Calumet. They provide
an important opportunity for women to get away for fellowship, relaxation, faith sharing, (maybe some early
Christmas shopping, too!) and fun. Come enjoy breakfast buffets, yummy lunches and a special Saturday evening candlelight dinner.
Our weekend includes awesome singing and music, inspirational devotions, a Bible study offered by the chaplain, and exciting Sunday morning worship! With free time in the afternoon, some
folks head to North Conway for an enjoyable shopping trip, while others go for a
refreshing fall hike, and still others curl up with a favorite book in front of our fireplace. Zumba or yoga will also be offered on Saturday afternoon. Depending on
the date, the Calumet bus has been known to visit local craft fairs too!
And for those who choose it, there is the added amenity of a soothing massage
