First, HEAL NH’s own Terry Johnson will provide participants with an introduction to the HPHP Plan. This will be followed by four presentations given by NH experts in the field who will discuss: 1. Why this work is important in NH 2. Benefits of HPHP for NH communities 3. The key HPHP strategies aimed at accelerating progress towards Healthy People and Healthy Places in NH Presenters: Stacia Clinton, Regional Director, Healthy Food in Health Care Program, Health Care Without Harm Nik Coates, HEAL NH Active Living Coordinator Cindy Heath, Executive Director, GP RED Tom Kelly, Founding Director, UNH Sustainability Institute 1:10 - 2:20 Afternoon Workshops With each breakout focused on one strategy in the HPHP plan, the goal of each session is to provide participants a “how to approach” with suggested tools and resources to help catalyze work in the HPHP strategy. In each breakout, participants will: 1. Learn about one focused strategy within each HPHP goal. 2. Learn practical steps, tools and resources available for communities to implement the HPHP strategy. 3. Listen to real examples of HPHP strategies being implemented in NH 4. Participate in a group discussion regarding next steps, challenges and opportunities to support HPHP strategies in NH communities. Transforming NH’s System for Active Travel: Making Streets Safe for Everyone Who Uses Them Active Transportation specific: This discussion will focus on the experiences of two New Hampshire communities in making their neighborhoods and communities safer and more accessible to get around by bicycle and walking. Participants will be provided an overview of a the guide for assessing walkability and bikeability in communities compiled by the Foundation for Healthy Communities, and will then learn from two seasoned municipal planners how to implement complete streets elements into their communities. There will also be an open discussion with participants about the successes and challenges they have had in their communities, and how to overcome those challenges. While NH is known for the power of a friendly agreement, a formal, written document can provide a place for clear expectations, reduced liability, and successful partnerships. Stronger relationships with local producers, healthy hospital dining initiatives, and on-site farmers markets are just a few examples of how health care institutions are helping to shape a healthy food system in NH. Participants will be encouraged to use an “equity lens” to identify strategies with the greatest potential for impact.
