Vandeventer Middle School’s Career Day is on the horizon and we
hope that you will volunteer to share your professional experiences
with our students to make this day truly rewarding. We invite all adults
who are interested in stimulating and enriching our students’ knowledge
by giving them an opportunity to learn about exciting career choices.

Presenters set up in classrooms (if needed)
Students dismissed to move to the Gym
Assembly with Keynote speaker (15 Minute Presentation)
Movement back to 1st period classes and student directions

Students attend Session 3 of presentations
Lunch provided for presenters (Cafeteria/Stage)

Logistics:
Friday, November 21, 2014 7:45 – 11:30
Audience:
6th, 7th, and 8th grade students ages 12, 13, and 14
Program:
Your day will begin after the keynote presentation. You will present
three 40 minute presentations to groups of 25 students. Plan to speak
for the full time, leaving a minute or two for questions at the end. You
will stay in one classroom and the students will change rooms. The
teacher will remain with you during presentations.
Lunch:
We would love for you to stay and enjoy a catered lunch, which will be
served after the third session.
Purpose and Suggested Format
We want our students to get as much information about your career as possible. Please be
able to tell the students the following:
1. How did you get to the position you have?
a. Interests
b. Skills and talents
c. Experience
d. Education: college, certificates, training
2. What do you do in your job?
a. The process of your job
b. Your responsibilities
c. Hours you work in a day, in a week
d. Support/boss
e. Working conditions
3. What do you like best about what you do?
4. What other careers could someone with your background do?
5. What other educational backgrounds do people have that do your job?
6. What is the salary range for someone in your field?
a. Advancement opportunities
b. Promotions
c. Long term goals
7. Who uses your product and/or services?
8. How did you know you would like this kind of job?
9. What are the perks and benefits of your job (work at home, cell phone,
laptop computer, car, travel miles, discount on products/services,
insurance, vacations, etc)
10. How should students begin planning for your career?
11. What is the employment outlook for your position?
Helpful Hints
1. Bring handouts…anything the students can keep, things with your logo,
reminders of you and your job, samples of products. Bring enough
for 75 students.
2. Bring hands-on materials for them to touch that will be returned to you
before the students leave your session.
3. Be funny – middle school kids love humor.
4. Bring interactive items.

1. We have most everything from PowerPoint presentation software, overhead projectors,
TV, VCR, DVD, CD players, multimedia projectors to whiteboards.
2. We will place whatever you need in your presentation room.
3. If you will be using a PowerPoint, you can e-mail it to us ahead of time, or bring it on a
disk.
