Welcome
Home
Welcome to St. John’s
Whether you just walked in the door for the first time or have
called St. John’s home for years, “Welcome!” In this
community of St. John’s we strive to welcome ALL people.
This is no small thing. It takes time and effort and we do not
always do it as well as we might like, but we are intentionally
striving to be a more welcoming community each and every
day. Let us know how we are doing and what we can do
better.
Each Sunday we do the one thing that sets us apart from most
other organizations…we Worship. Our worship at its heart is
an opportunity to gather together as a community around
God’s table and say “Thank you” to God for all we have been
given. St. John’s is a community that is on a journey. We ask
questions, we wonder and we do not always have “The
Answer” but together we practice gratitude, we learn to love,
and we seek to serve the needs of the world.
We live in a world filled with activity where we are
bombarded with information without pause. My prayer for us
is that we more fully become a community where we can find
a home, a spiritual home, where we can discover and tend the
deep meaning of our lives. Thank you for helping to make
this vision a reality!
Peace to you,
The Rev. Robert E. Stevens, Jr.

The Nicene Creed
BCP. 358
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People
Please Stand or Kneel
Loving God, living God, be among us now. Show us your
ways. Guide our steps. Live in us, that we may be people of
steadfast hope and powerful giving. Help us hear your words,
challenging us to give you all the things that are yours. Help
us remember that all we are and all we have are gifts from
you, gifts to be shared in service and love. Holy One among
us, help us be a holy people. May we receive your word
with joy and live your message with love.
Loving God, living God, we pray for our leaders at home and
abroad. Grant them wisdom, insight, patience, dedication,
integrity, open-mindedness, and humility. Equip each one to
honor the trust placed in them. Guide, we pray, Barack, our
president; and Maggie, Paul, and Deval our governors. Keep
safe all those in military service, especially those serving in
harms way. Holy One among us, help us be a holy people.
May we receive your word with joy and live your
message with love.
We pray for the Church, for Justin, the Archbishop of
Canterbury; for Katharine, our Presiding Bishop; for Robert,
our Bishop; for Rob and Anne our clergy; for the staff,
wardens, vestry, and our entire community. Loving God, free
us from clever wordplay. For within today's exchange between
Jesus and Pharisees lies an important truth: deeds, not
words, are our measure. Remind us again that what you see is
how we actually treat other people, how we behave when we
are alone, how we make the tough choice between You and
Mammon, and how we place self-interest below the needs of
others. Holy One among us, help us be a holy people. May
we receive your word with joy and live your message
with love.
Loving God, when we touch our coins, remind us they can’t
buy what we need. It is your face we see in our world, our very
8
selves, our breath and love. We owe every single thing to you.
Claim it all. Claim us. Hear us now, as we offer our own
thanksgivings. (silence) Holy One among us, help us be a
holy people. May we receive your word with joy and
live your message with love.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for The Church in the
Province of the West Indies. In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer,
we pray for St. Barnabas’ Church, Berlin. We pray for any and
all who are in need, both in this community, and across the
world. And this day we lift up Frank, Mel, Carol, Lisa,
Stephen, Ruth, Armi & Louise, Jim, Loring, Brenda & family,
Becca, Anita, Chet, Alexa, Nancy, Janice, Trip & family,
Barbara, Kathy, Pell & Stephanie, Irene, and Danuta, Sheryl,
Dave, David, Sharon, Marsha, Mary, Kathy, Marion & Lewis,
Bill, Mark, Johnny, Tom, Bob, Amy, Gene, Mark, Carol &
Martin, Lew, Jon, Dan, Betty, Ginny, Doris, Sylvia, Charles,
Carl, Shirley, Pam, Kate, Gloria, Hunter, Ed, and Elias.
People may add their own petitions, either silently or aloud. Silence may
be kept.
We pray for the departed, especially William Bird. In your
love, turn the darkness of death into the dawn of new life.
Here any other intercessions may be added. Silence may be kept.
Presider
You know each of us by name, O God, and in your sight we
have found favor, yet our minds cannot comprehend the
vision of your glory or the vastness of your love. Grant that as
we glimpse your greatness, reflected in your many gifts, we
may always return to you the praise that is yours alone. We
ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Confession of Sin
The Celebrant says
Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Silence may be kept.
9
Minister and People
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.
The Priest, stands and says
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all
goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in
eternal life. Amen.
The Peace
All stand. The Celebrant says to the people:
People
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.
The children return from Kids’ Church in Thaxter Hall.

Eucharistic Prayer A
BCP. 361
The people remain standing. The Celebrant faces them and sings or says
10
Sursum corda
The Hymnal 1982
Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere
to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and
earth.
Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other
occasions as appointed.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and
Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever
sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
Sanctus
The Hymnal 1982
11
The people stand or kneel.
Then the Celebrant continues
Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us
for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become
subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus
Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature,
to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and
Father of all.
He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself
in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole
world.
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it
or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or
place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be
consecrated.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our
Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks
to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said,
“Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for
the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given
thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you:
This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you
and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink
it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Memorial Acclamation
The Hymnal 1982

The Celebrant continues
We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in
this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death,
resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the
Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new
and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may
faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity,
constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all
your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and
with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor
and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.
Amen.
And now, as our Savior
Christ has taught us,
we are bold to say,
People and Celebrant
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
13
The Breaking of the Bread
The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.
A period of silence is kept.
Fraction Anthem
The Hymnal 1982
Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following Invitation:
and may add
The Gifts of God for the People of God.
Take them in remembrance that Christ died for
you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith,
with thanksgiving.
All are invited to come forward for communion.
Communion Anthem: A Gladsome Hymn of Praise
Austin C. Lovelace, arr. Charles Lowden
After Communion, the Celebrant says:
Let us pray.
Celebrant and People
Eternal God, heavenly Father,
you have graciously accepted us as living members
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ,
and you have fed us with spiritual food
in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.
Send us now into the world in peace,
and grant us strength and courage
to love and serve you
with gladness and singleness of heart;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Announcements – October 19, 2014
October is time for ChIPs gifts
“Without you (ChIPs) this would not be possible for me and I would be left out of
my children’s Christmas.”
“My father was incarcerated for almost 6 years and died shortly after his release.
But while he was in there I still got a present from him...and I’m ever so
thankful.”
New Hampshire Episcopalians have once again begun their annual
drive to provide gifts for Children of Incarcerated Parents
(ChIPs).
This yearly program offers the parents a chance to give something
to their children during the holiday parties at the NH state prisons
where a parent can “shop” for a present and a book for their
children. For 30+ years, the Diocese of New Hampshire has
sponsored this great program.
Please bring your unwrapped gifts to St. John's anytime before
Thursday, November 6, and place them in the rear corner of the
church. If shopping is not possible, monetary donations in any
amount are also welcome with a check payable to St. John’s,
memoed “Chips”. Our delegates will deliver the gifts to Diocesan
Convention, Saturday, November 8.
Gift Guidelines
 We group gifts in the following age groups: Birth to 1; ages
2-4; 5-7; 8-11; and 12-15.
 Gifts should not exceed $20, but note that one $20 gift is
preferable to four $5 gifts as it is difficult to group smaller
items together.
 If your gift requires batteries, please purchase those as well
and attach them to the gift.
16
 We hope to collect a new book – hardcover or paperback for each child so a child receives a gift and a book.
 Consider buying a gift suitable for both boys and girls such
as balls or board games.
 Remember the older children. There is always a shortage of
gifts for older children.
 Please note … used items, homemade items, or gift cards
can not be accepted.
Lastly, please note these items are NOT acceptable: jewelry,
balloons, crayons, play dough, glue, bubbles, long sticks, knitting
needles, glass items, clothing, sharp tools or toy weapons of any
kind.
