There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God's call to us; One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; One God and Father of all. THE COLLECT FOR THE DAY Celebrant People Celebrant The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. THE LESSON Revelation 7:9-17 After this I, John, looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen. "Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from? "I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows. " Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." Celebrant People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4 THE GRADUAL (said responsively by half-verse) Psalm 34:1-10, 22 1 I will bless the LORD at all times; * his praise shall ever be in my mouth. 2 I will glory in the LORD; * let the humble hear and rejoice. 3 Proclaim with me the greatness of the LORD; * let us exalt his Name together. 4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me * and delivered me out of all my terror. 5 Look upon him and be radiant, * and let not your faces be ashamed. 6 I called in my affliction and the LORD heard me * and saved me from all my troubles. 7 The angel of the LORD encompasses those who fear him, * and he will deliver them. 8 Taste and see that the LORD is good; * happy are they who trust in him! 9 Fear the LORD, you that are his saints, * for those who fear him lack nothing. 10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger, * but those who seek the LORD lack nothing that is good. 22 The LORD ransoms the life of his servants, * and none will be punished who trust in him. The people stand as they are able. *At the 9 a.m. service, during the sequence hymn, children from Kindergarten through Grade 4 are invited to walk down the aisle behind a Crucifer (carrying the cross) and go into the downstairs Day School classroom next to the nursery for Children’s Chapel. SEQUENCE HYMN Peace in the Valley 5 Traditional THE GOSPEL Priest People Matthew 5:1-12 The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Priest People The Gospel of the Lord. It is right to give God thanks and praise. We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. Celebrant We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. 9 THE BAPTISM Each candidate is presented by name to the Celebrant who then pours water upon the candidate, saying N., I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Then the Priest places a hand on the person’s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross and saying to each one N., you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ's own for ever. Amen. The Celebrant says Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. The Celebrant says Let us welcome the newly baptized. Celebrant and People We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. Celebrant People Celebrant Traditional, arr. Carter The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. 11 People Celebrant People We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For in the multitude of your saints you have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses, that we might rejoice in their fellowship, and run with endurance the race that is set before us; and, together with them, receive the crown of glory that never fades away. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: SANCTUS Sing through twice 12 Then the Celebrant continues We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Celebrant and People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory. 13 The Celebrant continues And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the Ever-blessed Virgin Mary, Margaret and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread and a period of silence is kept. In addition to sending supplies and financial aid, the church supported individual efforts of assistance and collectively prayed for individuals and entire cities affected by the storm. In thinking about the All Saints Sunday service that year, we considered the New Orleans tradition of the Dixieland Jazz Funeral Parade. Those parades start with slow and somber music as the hearse bears the casket to the cemetery, but the return parade is joyous and triumphant, celebrating the joy of our hope through the resurrection of Christ and the mystical communion of all faithful people. Over the subsequent years, this service has become a tradition at the church. We encourage all who attend to sing enthusiastically, to clap along, praise God with all of your heart, and join us at the altar to commune together with those who have gone before. 20 Coming Soon! Yesterday was the Day of Repentance and Reconciliation in the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Abolition of Chattel Slavery in Maryland. An actual diocesan pilgrimage departed from the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Baltimore and then to three historic parishes, ending at the Bishop Claggett Center. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori attended with Bishop Eugene Sutton, Bishop Suffragan Heather Cook, and Bishop Mariann Budde of the Diocese of Washington. Twenty-one parishes, including St. Margaret's, have committed to this work, a journey that took us deep into our history (see our website for more information). St. Margaret's History & Archives project has placed five historical markers at various locations on the campus as pilgrimage sites. A virtual and actual pilgrimage is being offered to St. Margaret’s Guild this Wednesday, November 5, at 1 p.m. in the conference room and all are invited. A similar virtual and actual pilgrimage will be shared with the church Sunday, December 14, between the 9:00 am and 11:15 am services. Individual and group pilgrimages - no affiliation with St. Margaret's required, are also welcome and can be arranged by contacting Mike Winn at [email protected] or Barbara Breeden [email protected] Both virtual and actual pilgrimages are offered. Thanksgiving Holiday Meal Program St. Margaret's will once again be participating in a holiday meal donation program for local disadvantaged families and is seeking parishioner assistance. We ask that parishioners consider signing up to purchase a pre-determined list of non-perishable meal items for a Thanksgiving dinner. The church's Missions Commission will provide the turkeys.
